This book is based on a series of lectures delivered to experimental physicists by one of the authors (L. Landau) in Moscow in 1954. In maintaining the lecture form in the printed edition we are emphasizing the fact that the presentation makes no pretense at completeness and that the choice of subject matter is purely arbitrary. Since there is, at the present time, no rational theory of nuclear forces, we have limited our conclusions concerning nuclear structure to those which can be reached...

Since World War II, countries have pursued nuclear weapons because of their destructive power and influence as well as their deterrence value. At the same time, the great powers tried to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation. In this situation, the nuclear weapons development programs of South Africa and Israel still succeeded, but these countries did not publicize their nuclear capabilities. Why did these not disclose their nuclear weapons capabilities even if disclosure could strengthen...

The recently observed two high-spin rotational bands in the proton emitter $^{113}$Cs are investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the Pauli blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By using the configuration assignments of band 1 ($\pi 3/2^+[422], \alpha = -1/2$) and band 2 ($\pi 1/2^+[420], \alpha = 1/2$), the experimental moments of inertia and quasiparticle alignments can be well reproduced by the...

A study of 4$\alpha$ linear-chain structure in high-lying collective excitation states of $^{16}$O with a covariant density functional theory is presented. The low-spin states are obtained by configuration mixing of particle-number and angular-momentum projected quadrupole deformed mean-field states with generator coordinate method. The high-spin states are determined by cranking calculations. These two calculations are based on the same energy density functional PC-PK1. We have found a...

Single-particle levels of seven magic nuclei are calculated within the Energy Density Functional (EDF) method by Fayans et al. Three versions of the EDF are used, the initial Fayans functional DF3 and its two variations, DF3-a and DF3-b, with different values of spin-orbit parameters. Comparison is made with predictions of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method with the HFB-17 functional. For the DF3-a functional, phonon coupling (PC) corrections to single-particle energies are found self-consistently...

This article reviews recent advances in our understanding of the experimental aspects of jet-quenching and correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Emphasis is put on correlation measurements, namely jet-like correlations with anisotropic flow subtraction in heavy-ion collisions and long-range pseudorapidity correlations in small systems. Future path on correlation studies is envisioned which may elucidate jet-medium interactions and the properties of the hot dense...

We apply the complex scaling method to the calculation of scattering phase shifts and extract the contributions of resonances in a phase shift and a cross section. The decomposition of the phase shift is shown to be useful to understand the roles of resonant and non-resonant continuum states. As examples, we apply this method to several two-body systems: (i) a schematic model with the Gyarmati potential which produces many resonances, (ii) the alpha-alpha system which has a Coulomb barrier...

Shape coexistence has been a subject of great interest in nuclear physics for many decades. In the context of the nuclear shell model, intruder excitations may give rise to remarkably low-lying excited $0^+$ states associated with different intrinsic shapes. In heavy open-shell nuclei, the dimension of the shell-model configuration space that includes such intruder excitations becomes exceedingly large, thus requiring a drastic truncation scheme. Such a framework has been provided by the...

It is theoretically and experimentally argued that there may exist bubble or toroid-shaped configurations in some nucleus systems. Based on the nuclear transport model, it is shown that compared with the collision of normal nuclei, there is a depletion of central density of compression with bubble configurations in projectile and target nuclei. This depletion of central compression density may affect some observables in heavy-ion collisions.

We discuss anharmonicity of the multi-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb based on a covariant density functional theory, by fully taking into account the interplay between the quadrupole and the octupole degrees of freedom. Our results indicate the existence of a large anharmonicity in the transition strengths, even though the excitation energies are similar to those in the harmonic limit. We also show that the quadrupole-shape fluctuation significantly enhances the fragmentation of the...

The possibility that an unconventional depletion in the center of the charge density distribution of certain nuclei occurs due to a purely quantum mechanical effect has attracted theoretical and experimental attention in recent years. We report on ab initio self-consistent Green's function calculations of one of such candidates, $^{34}$Si, together with its Z+2 neighbour $^{36}$S. Binding energies, rms radii and density distributions of the two nuclei as well as low-lying spectroscopy of...

Prompted by recent measurements, we have surveyed world data and calculated radiative and isospin-symmetry breaking corrections for the superallowed 0+ -to- 0+ Fermi transitions from 42Ti, 46Cr, 50Fe and 54Ni. This increases the number of such transition with a complete set of calculated corrections from 20 to 23. The results are compared with their equivalents for the mirror superallowed transitions from 42Sc, 46V, 50Mn and 54Co. The predicted ft-value asymmetries of these mirror pairs are...

$^{20}$Ne has been known as a typical example of a nucleus with $\alpha$ cluster structure ($^{16}$O+$\alpha$ structure). However according to the spherical shell model, the spin-orbit interaction acts attractively for four nucleons outside of the $^{16}$O core, and this spin-orbit effect cannot be taken into account in the simple $\alpha$ cluster models. We investigate how the $\alpha$ cluster structure competes with independent particle motions of these four nucleons. The antisymmetrized...
