Observations of X-ray emissions from binary systems have long since been considered important tools to test General Relativity in strong-field regimes. The high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) observed in binaries containing a black hole candidate, in particular, have been proposed as a means to measure more directly the black hole properties such as its mass and spin. Numerous models have been suggested to explain the HFQPOs and the rich phenomenology accompanying them. Many of...

The Salton Sea, shown in this series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images, is California’s largest lake. The current Salton Sea formed in 1905 when an irrigation canal ruptured, diverting the Colorado River into the Salton Basin in southeastern California. The basin filled, resulting in the lake that exists today. At 227 feet below sea level, the basin has...

Sandstorms that have been scouring southwestern Afghanistan since June 5 are being called the worst in living memory by residents of the area. The dust and sand have buried villages, filled waterways, destroyed crops and killed livestock. The storms are predicted to persist until the end of August, creating a huge environmental disaster for more than 10,000 people in the affected region. I argue that the limits on this quantity obtained using model-independent parameterizations contain an tacit assumption that could be invalidated under a variety of situations. As a specific example, existing limits on $\Lambda $ would be decreased by at least an order of magnitude if the underlying physics has a symmetry under which all \sm particles are singlets but none of the heavy excitations are. In this case current experiments would see no clear indications of new physics using...

The first significant steps in implementing the new 2005 base closure law were formally announced by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on November 15, 2002. These included development of a force structure plan, conducting a comprehensive inventory of military installations, and establishing criteria for selecting bases for closure or realignment. Concurrently, many communities near military facilities are experiencing anxiety about their future. Efforts, on their part, to protect these bases...

Locating and obtaining context sensitive information in a mobile environment has always been a challenge. This is especially true for pervasive computing environments where in addition to limited computing and battery resources, mobile devices cannot always rely on the help of a proxy-based wired infrastructure. Rather, a collaboration among peer mobile entities is required. It allows entities to obtain data that may be otherwise inaccessible due to nature of the environment and to reduce their...

We give the explicit expression of the infinite volume limit for the random overlap structures appearing in the mean field spin glass model. These structures have the expected factorization property for the cavity fields, and enjoy invariance with respect to a large class of random transformations. These properties are typical of the Parisi Ansatz.

Using 170-Yb and 155-Gd Mossbauer measurements down to 0.03K, we have examined the semiconducting pyrochlore Yb2Mo2O7 where the Mo intra-sublattice interaction is anti-ferromagnetic and the metallic pyrochlore Gd2Mo2O7 where this interaction is ferromagnetic. Additional information was obtained from susceptibility, magnetisation and 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation measurements. The microscopic measurements evidence lattice disorder which is important in Yb2Mo2O7 and modest in Gd2Mo2O7....

We demonstrate that our recently introduced stochastic Hebb-like learning rule is capable of learning the problem of timing in general network topologies generated by an algorithm of Watts and Strogatz. We compare our results with a learning rule proposed by Bak and Chialvo and obtain not only a significantly better convergence behavior but also a dependence of the presentation order of the patterns to be learned by introduction of an additional degree of freedom which allows the neural network...

In the garnet structure compound Yb3Ga5O12, the Yb3+ ions (ground state effective spin S' = 1/2) are situated on two interpenetrating corner sharing triangular sublattices such that frustrated magnetic interactions are possible. Previous specific heat measurements evidenced the development of short range magnetic correlations below 0.5K and a lambda-transition at 54mK (Filippi et al. J. Phys. C: Solid State Physics 13 (1980) 1277). From 170-Yb M"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements down to...

The simulations of field-evaporation processes for silicon atoms on various Si(001) surfaces are implemented using the first-principles calculations based on the real-space finite-difference method. We find that the atoms which locate on atomically flat Si(001) surfaces and at step edges are easily removed by applying external electric field, and the threshold value of the external electric field for evaporation of atoms on atomically flat Si(001) surfaces, which is predicted between 3.0 and...

Discretization of phase space usually nullifies chaos in dynamical systems. We show that if randomness is associated with discretization dynamical chaos may survive and be indistinguishable from that of the original chaotic system, when an entropic, coarse-grained analysis is performed. Relevance of this phenomenon to the problem of quantum chaos is discussed.

Detailed analysis of the distribution of nuclear matter in the halo nucleus $^{11}$Be is performed within the microscopic approach based on the flexible variational basis of the functions of the "polarized" orbitals model. It is shown that the proposed approach reproduces, in agreement with the experiment, the most distinguishing features of the mass distribution in this system. Taking into account the results of specific calculations and the exceptionally high reliability of the...

We formulate and solve the diffusion problem of line photon propagation in a bulk outflow from a compact object (black hole or neutron star) using a generic assumption regarding the distribution of line photons within the outflow. Thomson scattering of the line photons within the expanding flow leads to a decrease of their energy which is of first order in v/c, where v is the outflow velocity and c is the speed of light. We demonstrate that the emergent line profile is closely related to the...
