As Tropical Storm Claudette churned through the western Caribbean, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite captured these images of the storm at 2:46 am EDT on the 10th of July, 2003. Claudette was still about 200 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman when the images were taken, and at that time, Claudette was classified as a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The storm was moving quickly across the central and western...

Weak gravitational lensing provides a unique method to map directly the distribution of dark matter in the universe and to measure cosmological parameters. This cosmic-shear technique is based on the measurement of the weak distortions that lensing induces in the shape of background galaxies as photons travel through large-scale structures. This technique is now widely used to measure the mass distribution of galaxy clusters and has recently been detected in random regions of the sky. In this...

The resonant spectra of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in the presence of an external electric field are compared theoretically. It is shown that nonresonant corrections to the transition frequency contain terms linear in the electric field. The existence of these terms does not violate space and time parity and leads to a difference in the resonant spectroscopic measurements for hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in an external electric field. The one-photon 1s-2p and the two-photon 1s-2s...

We construct a two parameter family of collapsing solutions to the 4+1 Yang-Mills equations and derive the dynamical law of the collapse. Our arguments indicate that this family of solutions is stable. The latter fact is also supported by numerical simulations.

We calculate the nuclear inclusive and diffractive cross sections for heavy quark photoproduction within a phenomenological saturation approach. The nuclear cross section is obtained by the extension of the saturation model through Glauber-Gribov formalism. We predict large nuclear heavy quark cross section at LHC energies.

Predicting and characterizing the crystal structure of materials is a key problem in materials research and development. It is typically addressed with highly accurate quantum mechanical computations on a small set of candidate structures, or with empirical rules that have been extracted from a large amount of experimental information, but have limited predictive power. In this letter, we transfer the concept of heuristic rule extraction to a large library of ab-initio calculated information,...

Stellar occultations -- the passing of a relatively nearby body in front of a background star -- can be used to probe the atmosphere of the closer body with a spatial resolution of a few kilometers. Such observations can yield the scale height, temperature profile, and other information about the structure of the occulting atmosphere. Occultation data acquired for Pluto's atmosphere in 1988 revealed a nearly isothermal atmosphere(sup 2) above a radius of approximately 1,215 km. Below this...

We investigate the relationship of the HII region luminosity function (HII LF) to the HII region size distribution and density wave triggering in grand-design spiral galaxies. We suggest that the differential nebular size distribution is described by a power law of slope ~ -4, with flattening at radii below ~ 130 pc. This contrasts with the conventional exponential description, but it is physically and quantitatively consistent with the typical observed value of -2 for the HII LF slope. We have...

We investigate tachyon dynamics with an inverse power-law potential $V(\phi) \propto \phi^{-\alpha}$. We find global attractors of the dynamics leading to a dust behaviour for $\alpha > 2$ and to an accelerating universe for $0 < \alpha \le 2$. We study linear cosmological perturbations and we show that metric fluctuations are constant on large scales in both cases. In presence of an additional perfect fluid, the tachyon with this potential behaves as dust or dark energy.

Precise Li abundances are determined for 54 giant stars mostly evolving across the Hertzsprung gap. We combine these data with rotational velocity and with information related to the deepening of the convective zone of the stars to analyse their link to Li dilution in the referred spectral region. A sudden decline in Li abundance paralleling the one already established in rotation is quite clear. Following similar results for other stellar luminosity classes and spectral regions, there is no...

We argue that gamma-rays sources observed in the direction of the Cyg OB2 association in the GeV and TeV energy range are due to a pulsar which was created by a supernova a few tens of thousands years ago. The excess of cosmic rays at 10^18 eV can be also related to the appearance of this pulsar.

We present a systematic calculation of the volumes of compact manifolds which appear in physics: spheres, projective spaces, group manifolds and generalized flag manifolds. In each case we state what we believe is the most natural scale or normalization of the manifold, that is, the generalization of the unit radius condition for spheres. For this aim we first describe the manifold with some parameters, set up a metric, which induces a volume element, and perform the integration for the...

Twenty miles north of Tucson, Arizona, the Aspen Fire raged through the Coronado National Forest in June and July 2003. The fire began on June 17, 2003, and over the next few weeks grew to more than 40,000 acres. Hundreds of homes and businesses in communities on Mount Lemmon were burned, and hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area as fire fighters struggle to contain the blaze in difficult terrain under hot, dry, windy conditions. In these <a...

We obtain a new self-similar solution to the Einstein's equations in four-dimensions, representing the collapse of a spherically symmetric, minimally coupled, massless, scalar field. Depending on the value of certain parameters, this solution represents the formation of naked singularities and black holes. Since the black holes are identified as the Schwarzschild ones, one may naturally see how these black holes are produced as remnants of the scalar field collapse.

This report results from a contract tasking Russian Academy of Sciences as follows: Because of the widespread increase in man-made sources of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), including high peak-power pulsed EMF (HPPP EMF), it has become important to study the health consequences, including possible genotoxic effects of such fields. Because of the simultaneous increase in other environmental toxins, it is difficult to isolate the effects of EMFs in natural human populations. Therefore, this...

High-resolution spectroscopy was obtained of the FUors FU Ori and V1057 Cyg between 1995 and 2002 with SOFIN at NOT and with HIRES at Keck I. During those years FU Ori remained about 1 mag. (in B) below its 1938-39 maximum brightness, but V1057 Cyg (B ~ 10.5 at peak in 1970-71) faded from about 13.5 to 14.9 and then recovered slightly. Their photospheric spectra resemble a rotating G0 Ib supergiant, with v_eq sin i = 70 km/s for FU Ori and 55 km/s for V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg faded, P Cyg...

Compiled radio spectra are presented for 208 extragalactic sources from the catalog created from the WMAP satellite all-sky survey data in a range of 23-94 GHz taken during the first year of its operation in orbit. 205 out of 208 WMAP sources are reliably identified with radio sources from other catalogs, including also four out of five sources unidentified by the WMAP survey authors. The stability properties of inviscid protostellar disks are examined taking into account the Hall effect and buoyancy. Depending on the parameters, different types of instabilities can exist in different regions of disks. In a very low ionized region, the instability associated with baroclinic effects of buoyancy is likely most efficient. The Hall-driven shear instability can lead to destabilization of regions with a higher ionization. The magnetorotational instability modified by buoyancy can...

Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling has become a standard technique for exploring the posterior distribution of cosmological parameters constrained by observations of CMB anisotropies. Given an infinite amount of time, any MCMC sampler will eventually converge such that its stationary distribution is the posterior of interest. In practice, however, naive samplers require a considerable amount of time to explore the posterior distribution fully. In the best case, this results only in wasted CPU...

A moderate level of variability has been detected in the quiescent luminosity of several neutron star soft X-ray transients. Spectral variability was first revealed by Chandra observations of Aql X-1 in the four months that followed the 2000 X-ray outburst. By adopting the canonical model for quiescent spectrum of soft X-ray transients, i.e. an absorbed neutron star atmosphere model plus a power law tail, Rutledge et al. (2002a) concluded that the observed spectral variations can be ascribed to...

Polar spots are often observed on rapidly-rotating cool stars, but the nature of the magnetic field in these spots is as yet unknown. While Zeeman-Doppler imaging can provide surface magnetic field maps over much of the observed stellar surface, the Zeeman signature is suppressed in the dark polar regions. We have determined the effect on the global coronal structure of three current models for this polar field: that it is composed (a) of unipolar field, (b) of bipolar regions or (c) of nested...

In a previous paper we examined the role of a conscious observer in a typical quantum mechanical measurement. Four rules were given that were found to govern the stochastic choice and state reduction in several cases of continuous and intermittent observation. It was shown that consciousness always accompanies a state reduction leading to observation, but its presence is not sufficient to 'cause' a reduction. The distinction is clarified and codified by the rules that are repeated below. In...

We observe single vortices as they penetrate the edge of a superconductor using a high-sensitivity magneto-optical microscope. The vortices leap across a gap near the edge, a distance that decreases with increasing applied field and sample thickness. This behaviour can be explained by the combined effect of the geometrical barrier and bulk pinning.
