World War 1:
The War to End All Wars
How It Started:
On June 28, 1914 a Serbian man named Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Franz Ferdinand. The next day on
the 29th anti-Serbian riots started to occur in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina where more than 7,000
people were killed in the riots, died in prison or sentenced to death. The next month in July, Serbia
ordered soldiers to patrol in and around Austria. The next year in 1905, the German General Staff
created a plan called the Schlieffen Plan where German forces went through Belgium (Note: Belgium
was and still is a neutral country). On July 29th the British government handed out notes to Germany and
France to respect Belgian neutrality, France pledged to do so, Germany did not. Kaiser Wilhelm’s
ambassador to London, Prince Lichnowsky told Wilhelm that Britain would remain neutral if France
wasn’t attacked. On the early hours of August 4th, Germany invaded Belgium, Britain gave one last
ultimatum with no response Germany was now at war with Britain and all of its allies.
