david: you got a masters at usc and then were sort of writing a bit on the side, during the daytime or evenings or how were you doing that? shonda: yeah. i got a job at a place that help the mentally ill and homeless. i was an administrative assistant and at night i would write my scripts. and i had an agent or lawyer of -- lawyer at the time. i sold a script. that script basically changed my life. david: had that script not sold, you might be still in advertising or what do you think you would be doing? shonda: i remember, for a month before that script sold, i had applied for the postbaccalaureate year for medical school at bryn mawr and i was going to do that and go to medical school because i thought i cannot starve this way anymore. this is not for me. i'm going to be a doctor. luckily, i did not do that. david: the medical profession's loss is the creative writing community's gain because you are not a doctor but it worked out ok. shonda: i hope that may be writing about doctors has inspired people to be doctors. that's how i like to think of it. david: most people who have been
