labor secretary jonathan walsh -- secretary marty walsh, speaking with jonathan ferro. joining us now is julia pollak, ziprecruiter labor economist. can you describe for us how much difficulty companies, people looking to hire are having in getting people to fill the roles they have? julia: the economy added 850,000 jobs, and that is great news, but it could add even more if there wasn't this constraint on the growth in jobs at the moment, which is the labor shortage. so labor force participation remains flat, and that is really putting a break on hiring. we could see even greater fireworks in the labor market over the next few months as that constraint relaxes. guy: do we have to wait until we get through the summer holidays? do we have to wait for kids to go back for parents to return to the labor force? do we have a couple of months where nothing is going to change ? julia: the household survey was very strange this month. ed actually showed the population increasing, and that puts downward pressure on all of the rates that are calculated. so we did see the labor for

marty walsh? i think -- marty walsh: -- secretary walsh: this is probably one of the most prolabor prounion administrations in the history of the country. saying that, labor has a role to play as well. they have to go out of their whether it is a current or new contract to let people know we work together with businesses to move businesses forward. some of the disputes we are seeing around the country is over wages and health care and pensions. but, some of it is over working conditions too. so, the occurrence earns -- the concerns people have in this country now generally, their concern is making sure they are going into a safe work environment. we are still living in a pandemic. i think some of these contracts are really about work conditions. that is something we have not seen in quite a bit. david: what are you seeing on the process i should -- on the participation front? what can the department of labor do about it? secretary walsh: we are not seeing the participation rate we would like in th

the secretary of labor, marty walsh. secretary walsh and the biden administration, today, revealed an unusual alliance in support of the senate bipartisan infrastructure deal. which is one of the two infrastructure bills president biden hopes to sign into law. labor and business are usually on the opposite sides in legislative battles. for example, the biggest business lobbying group in wash washing, chamber of commerce opposes a $15 minimum wage increase. but they both find themselves on the same side in support of the bipartisan-infrastructure bill. the aflcio and the chamber of commerce, along with the powerful business roundtable and several, other labor and business organizations issued a joint statement today saying, quote, infrastructure modernization is a critical component of long-term economic growth and improved quality of life for every american. our organizations commend the bipartisan group of 22 senators and the biden administration on finding common ground and reaching agreement on an historic $1.2 trilli
