joining me, white house correspondent jeff mason and "new york times" political reporter jeremy peters. gentlemen, it's always good to see you. the committee, jeff, wants these documents. they want the memos, they want the emails from the trump white house. what do they think might be in them? >> well, that's a good question. i think number one, what they want is to see some actual evidence of what kind of communications there were between the white house and the people who planned the rallies. both on january 5th ahead of the insurrection and on january 6th itself. the president, of course, the former president, i should say, is eager to protect that and has been arguing privilege. but the argument that the previous court tossed out was for reasons that the current president, president biden, and congress want those documents to be made public. so -- but to get back to your question, katy, they clearly are looking for evidence of what sort of communication and what sort of detail was exchanged between the white house and the planners of those events. >> so jeremy, as jeff just said, t

i'm joined now by jeremy gray. thanks for joining us on this. what more do we know about this crash? and the lives that having lost? >> well, this involved multiple vehicles. we had a tropical storm claudette that swept the lower part of the state yesterday, and we believe this may have been related to hydroplaning. multiple vehicles, one was a van with a girls ranch. there were nine people on board. the driver, the adult, she was pulled to safety by a bystander. the bystarter unfortunately was not ability to get to the children because of the flames. eight young people, ranging in ages from 4 to 17, were killed in that vehicle. two of them were children of the driver, and the others were, i believe, residents of the youth home, maybe a nephew or niece of the driver as well. we're still confirming that. one of the other vehicles, like i said there were multiple vehicles, a volunteer firefighter from ten sees, and his 9-month-old daughter were killed. as we understand it, they young people at the girls ranch youth were coming back from gulf shore

joining us now, jeremy peters. hi, jeremy. did you get a sense from the former president when you interviewed him recently about how much he is planning on throwing his weight behind other gop candidates? >> i think this ken paxton endorsement is totally unsurprising for all the reasons you laid out, elise, but remember, ken paxton was the lead author on that lawsuit that was tossed out by the supreme court that sought to overturn basically the results in several swing states. it was essentially laughed out of court, but more importantly to president trump, that was the ultimate display of loyalty that he likes to seeing and because ken paxton was behind that, he gets the endorsement. i think that's what you're likely to see play out going forward as we get into 2022. trump is not looking for anybody to adhere to any set of policies that he favors. he's looking for people to embrace his lie about this, quote/unquote, stolen election, and no one has done that. few, i should say, have done that more vig rugly than ken paxton has

jeremy, i want to start with you. on what i have heard from people all across the ideological spectrum, frankly, about -- i've heard from sort of former bush people who will say privately, if we had done this, they would have killed us, and i have heard from democrats, including congressman ted lieu there and adam schiff last night calling for a wholesale review and a house cleaning by the garland justice department of anyone that was involved. >> hey, nicole, first, i think there are multiple red flags here. first, any time you're investigating overseers, meaning, congressional overseers, you're creeping on separation of powers, and you're violating the sanctity of the oversight process and i think only the top levels of the justice department could green light an investigation of members of congress. that's point one. second is the investigative techniques utilized here, collecting metadata, in my experience, is unprecedented. i've been involved in leak investigations. i've known about them. i've known that members
