they arrested this man to hundred 40 kilometers outside of atlanta. he was heading to florida, police say he may have intended to carry out an attack then. >> we were able to put that out on social media shortly thereafter word we were contacted by members of the family. indicating that maybe it would be their son. we met with them. and, i was there speaking with the family, they were very distraug they were very helpful in this apprehension. we were able to track his phone. the sheriff, a good friend of mine, he reached out -- i reached out to him anticipating the movement into his county. we were able to coordinate with the state patrol and set up a position to intercept the suspect. >> investigators say they have not determined whether the shootings were a hate crime. we do know attacks against asian americans are increasing in part because of them being falsely blamed for the pandemic. >> obviously, whatever the motivation was for this guy, we know that many of the victims, the majority of the victims are asian. we also know that this is an issue

we begin with breaking news overnight from atlanta. a deadly shooting spree raising new concerns about asian-americans being targeted across the country. >> police are trying to determine why a man opened fire at several spas in metro atlanta killing eight people. it comes just as congress prepares to hold a hearing tomorrow on the disturbing increase in violent attacks from california to new york targeting people of asian descent. this morning the fbi is now investigating a shooting spree that left eight people dead at multiple massage parlors in the atlanta area. police first identified 21-year-old robert long as the suspect in a shooting that killed four people at a spa in cherokee county. one hour later investigators say a gunman matching his description worked into two other massage parlors in atlanta killing four more people. >> it appears all victims are female. >> and race? >> it appears they may be asian. >> reporter: atlanta police then dispatching officers to check nearby similar businesses. >> this started up in cherokee co

first, let's go to cnn's amara walker in atlanta. atlanta police say their investigation is now far from over. what's the latest? >> reporter: first off, not too long ago this crowd behind me near one of the crime scenes gathered to condemn anti-asian hate. so that rally is underway right now, but we did just hear from the atlanta police department. we learned that the suspect had frequented these two spas before, he was quite familiar with them. he had purchased the gun the day of the shooting. atlanta police also emphasizing the fact that their investigation is slightly different from that of the cherokee county sheriff's department saying there are four asian women killed at these two spas in atlanta. they say they're looking at everything to determine whether or not this was racially motivated. >> our investigation is looking at everything, so nothing is off the table. >> reporter: as investigators take a hard look into what motivated the suspect to go on the mass shooting spree that left eight dead, including six asian women. th

the asian-american community in georgia, following the mass shooting here in atlanta. it was a raw and powerful meeting in a very emotional moment and some criticized me for speaking out nationally about that hate crime. some criticized me for saying how ugly and sinister it was. since then, because of the two senators you sent, among others, the united states senate passed the covid-19 hate crimes act to protect asian americans and pacific islanders from the vicious hate crimes we have seen too often and too long. it passed 94-to-1. don't tell me we can't make progress. it's the first step, and we have a lot more to do. that's right. if we are to truly heal the soul of america, we need to project that sacred right and protect it to vote. in this state of dr. king and john lewis, you know how precious and precarious the right to vote is. in november and again in january, your vote changed the world. instead of celebrating that, it is being attacked. more people voted for president in 2020 than any time in american history ever. and they did it in the middle of a pandem
