jonathan: let's talk about the shootings in atlanta. the tragic shootings in atlanta. prosecuting hate crimes requires law enforcement to find proof that the incidents are racially motivated. do you believe there is proof to pursue hate crimes for the shootings in atlanta? rep. chu: let's look at what the shooter did, this 21-year-old white male picked a business for his first victim called "young's asian massage" and shot four victims there, then drove 27 miles to a location with two asian spa businesses side-by-side and then shot into those businesses. he had lots of choices along the way, if the issue was sex addiction. but no, he specifically chose three asian businesses, where clearly, if he shot into them, he would kill asian women. i think that there has to be as many resources as possible to prove a hate crime. actually, whether law enforcement uses those resources to the greatest degree possible to look for those clues that would support a hate crime statute and charge depends on the level of commitment of law enforcement to it. that is why we are pushing for

you know, just a tufew days agoi paid a visit to the two spa scenes in atlanta, as a resident of atlanta and a member of the asian-american community and a few things stuck out. firstly, i saw a lot of youngpeople of asian decent coming to the scene, many of them crying for strangers they have never met before. they were kneeling and bowing at the make-shift memorials and it was a familiar sight to me, in our culture, in the korean culture, you bow in respect to your elders and ancestors graves. i felt this collective pain that our community is really feeling right now. and it reminded me of this word, it's a kree -- it's a korean word called han, it's deeply sorrow, grief and anger that they feel because of injustices and it has come from a long history of being invaded and depressed. the feeling of han was palpable. i heard someone saying is it a fair thing for an asian-american to cover the shootings? absolutely it's a fair thing, and it's the only way to do it. i know as a journalist, i'm supposed to be objective. but i'm also human and asian-american and i'm an asian-american woman

now, it's something more to the forefront given what has happened in atlanta. there has been no official motive named by authorities here. bring us up to speed with the suspect now charged with murder in the shootings in atlanta, when do we expect to see them in court? what are your latest forces, whether additional charges, like maybe hate crimes, could be on the way? >> reporter: and, i want to pick up on that very point where you and joe left off. that's talking about the potential motive. you know, law enforcement have said all along, it's still too early to kind of determine the motive. overnight, we got a strongly-worded statement from atlanta police, essentially underscoring that point, making it clear the investigation is still very much in the early stages and that they are still continuing to dig into what motivated this shooting and saying they have not ruled anything out. that means race has not been ruled out as a factor as well. all of that, of course, comes after we watched that news conference about 24 hours ago now where we heard officials from
