what we've seen in atlanta are part of larger longer patterns of anti should violence. which dates back to at a chinese violence during the 1900 centuries the passage of the 875 page law that was directed at chinese banning chinese women but in practice ended up stereotyping all chinese women as prostitutes we continue to see banning japanese immigrants with the 924 immigration act and then in the late are the middle to late 20th century we see us imperialism in asia and the establishment of military camp towns in korea that condoned perpetuated sexual violence against korean women during the cold war and in other us wars in asia and so all of this history deeply informs what we saw happen in atlanta and why historians are calling for the fact that racism and sexism must be understood as part of the factors that contributed to this hate crime right so there is this kind of underlying see if you like of racism that's always there but crissy can erupt to be at any moment as we see there are particular moments we've seen at each asian violence that arise during great depre

i want to begin by acknowledging the mass shootings in atlanta. whatever the motive, those murders have traumatized asian american communities already reeling from the year of persistent hate violence. i would like to make two points today. while the causes of hate crimes are complex, academic research shows harmful rhetoric from the leaders towards immigrants or racial minorities can embolden people to commit violence against them. research also shows political events change perceptions to the social norms like acceptability of racist or xenophobic views have triggered the hate violence. prior studies show hate crimes spiked immediately after his election and that if negative tweets towards muslims strongly correlated with anti-muslim hate crimes. that brings us to the past year when the former president trump and other leaders relentlessly characterized the coronavirus in racist terms. as recently as this week. stop research shows donald trump anti-asian tweets were shared on social media over a million times. a substantial number of anti-asian

in metro atlanta, we are actively vaccinating now. it is not a lack of vaccines, it is just having the capacity to vaccinate the number of people who want it, which is a good thing that there are health-care workers here who want to be vaccinated. that is why yesterday when we met with metrohealth directors, we felt that the best way to address that was to have a mass vaccine clinic. several of them probably throughout the metro area, not just in atlanta but in a number of areas, and they are working together right now on that. and i suspect we may see it as early as next week. we must ensure we have enough vaccine. we can do 5000 in a clinic. but right now, we are vaccinating. i know that many of the public health districts are having vaccination clinics this weekend after new year's. so that will continue. it isn't that we are not vaccinating. we are. but the priority will be to get the health-care workers, but we will quickly move into the other phase of vaccinating, particularly the 65 and older, which is of great concern to all o
