america isn't hatfields and mccoys, blood field forever. america is a union. there is a lot that's broken in this country but not anything that's so big that the american people can't rebuild it, that freedom and community and even tra pra neural neighborhoods can't be fixed. generations of our forefathers and our foremothers -- probably not a word, our ancestors have spilled blood to defend the glories of this republic. why would they do that? because america is the most exceptional nation in the history of the world and because the constitution is the greatest political document that's ever been written. most governments in the past have said might makes right, and we saw some of that nutry today. might makes right. no, it doesn't. god gives us rights by nature and government is just our shared project to secure those rights. america has always been about what we choose to do together. the way we reaffirm our constitutional system where we have some governmental tasks and we all in this body could do better at those tasks, but the heart of america is our gov

what's better for america? a tax cut to make corporations richer and ceos richer and investments that are going to make our country stronger, more competitive, and lift up the standard for everybody. and by the way, this is not punishing anybody. all those folks are still going to have two homes, and three homes, their jets. won't matter. not going to change their standing one little bit. not surprisingly, critics say they worry that i'm going to stunt economic growth by raising taxes on corporations and wealthy. there's just one problem with their argument. the facts. experts have looked at it. the last time taxes were around the rates i'm proposing was in the '90s and the economy boomed. america created 20 million new jobs in 8 years when these were the tax rates, and the facts are, the american economy has had record job creation and growth under the same kind of plan i'm proposing, and here's why. our economy has always done best when everyone pays their fair share. again, i'm not looking to punish anybody.

was there a better alternative for america? is this america's problem? look, we know it's a political problem, the scenes are terrible for america's image, they're terrible for biden's image. but even the president gave a nod that what we're seeing is the price of pulling out. >> i stand squarely behind my decision. after 20 years, i learned the hard way. that there was never a good time to withdraw u.s. forces. but i always promised the american people that i will be straight with you. the truth is, this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated. american troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves. i am president of the united states of america. and the buck stops with me. i'm deeply saddened by the facts we now face, but i do not regret any decision to end america's war-fighting in afghanistan and maintain a laser-focused on our counterterrorism mission. it's the right one for america. >> is it? did biden have a plan to get our allies out, to rescue those who ris

america is not a racist country. it's backwards to fight discrimination, with different types of discrimination. and it's wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present. >> so, the president was absolutely clear. he doesn't think america's a racist country but our history is something that we have to deal with. and that's the point. senator scott was trying to twist what the president was saying about the challenges we face. that was a twist, right? pivot. we can't sweep our history, our past, under the rug. we shouldn't -- should never do that. we can't pretend that it is not there. we can't pretend that there isn't real work to be done, to get to the america in the pledge of allegiance. an america, with liberty and justice, for all. senator scott says it is wrong to talk about our painful past, as we debate our future. and let me just be fair, here. he is engaging on some of these issues. he is working on the bipartisan effort on police reform. but the fact is our painful past

it's not just with america. china and australia have seen growing disputes, attacks and counter-attacks. last year china publicly had 14 grievances with australia and warned, if you make china the enemy, china will be the enemy. and yet chinese purchases of australian goods recently hit a record high. this is why analogies to the cold war don't really capture the unusual nature of today's great power competition. during the cold war, the united states and the soviet union traded at best a few billion dollars' worth of goods every year. today the united states and china trade that much in a matter of days. the soviet union barely existed on the economic map of the free world. it presided over a tightly controlled economic block of communist countries that had few connections in trade or travel with the rest of the planet. mostly its economy was about resources, oil, gas, nickel, copper, et cetera. china, by contrast, is deeply embedded in the world economy. it is now the leading nation in trading and goods. the v
