i'm amy goodman. residents of buffalo, new york, gathered at vigils sunday to mourn the 10 people killed a day earlier when a white supremacist wearing body armor and carrying an assault rifle opened fire on a supermarket in a predominantly black neighborhood. of the 13 shoppers and store workers shot in the assault, 11 werelack. among those killed was 72-year-old kat massey, who wrote to the "buffalo news" last year in support of federal gun control laws. police arrested an 18-year-old suspect who reportedly live-streamed the massacre on the video streaming service twitch. the site took the video down within minutes, but the footage continues to circulate among white supremacists online. the suspect left behind a racist manifesto that included a plan to target a mainly black neighborhood. the manifesto plagiarized heavily from a screed left behind by the white supremacist who killed 51 people at two mosques in christchurch, new zealand, in 2019. the manifesto refers to "the great replacement," a raci

i'm amy goodman. in uvalde, texas, funerals are underway for the 19 fourth graders and two teachers killed one week ago when a gunman attacked the robb elementary school with an assault rifle he purchased just days after his 18th birthday. over the weekend, the justice department announced it would review the local police response to the massacre. authorities now admit there were 19 police officers inside the elementary school shortly after the attack began but they decided not to confront the gunman. instead, they stood outside the classroom for about 50 minutes. during that time, at least two students and teachers repeatedly called 911 begging for help. on sunday, president biden visited uvalde, joining a memorial for theictims at robb ementary school before attending mass at a local catholic church. biden said after the visit he hopes rational republicans will agree to bipartisan gun legislation. meanwhile, texas democrats are demanding republican governor greg abbott take action on guns. on friday

i'm amy goodman. a majority of supreme court justices are prepared to overturn abortion rights according to a lead to supreme court draft opinion published by politico. the document is an internally circulated majority draft opinion written by justice samuel alito that would strike down roe v. wade entirely. the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. in the draft, alito moves to overturn planned parenthood v. casey, the 1992 decision that upheld roe v. wade. the draft majority opinion reads -- "roe was egregiously wrong from the start. we hold that roe and casey must be overruled. it is time to heed the constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives." the leaked opinion suggests five conservative justices would vote to overturn roe, with justices clarence thomas, neil gorsuch, brett kavanaugh, and amy coney barrett joining alito. hundreds of protesters rallied outside the supreme court monday evening after news at that broke. >> this is tearing

i'm amy goodman. toy a democracy now! special. the supreme court appears poised to overturn abortion rights. earlier this month, politico published a leaked supreme court draft opinion which showed the court is set to overturn roe v. wade, the landmark decision that's guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights for half a century. if roe is overturned, 13 states have so-called trigger laws that would make abortion illegal as soon as the court rules. another 13 are expected to enact abortion bans soon after the court issues its ruling in the case known as dobbs v. jackson women's health. it was on the eve of the court's oral arguments in the dobbs case in november that law professor michele goodwin wrote a guest essay in "the new york times." it was headlined "i was raped by my father. an abortion saved my life." i recently interviewed michelle goodwin. i began by quoting from her article. a warning to our viewers and listeners, this segment includes descriptions of sexual violence

amy hollyfield is there now as the fire continues to burn. amy? amy: i apologize, i was having trouble hearing you. i want to show you what is happening behind me. it is still raging. firefighters have been at this for three hours, four hours. they got this call at 2:45. you can still see fire burning inside. they are taking a defensive approach. this is too dangerous for them to go inside. this is the pentecostals of the east bay. we have seen a large crowd gathering emotionally watching their building burn. this is located at central and railroad avenues in pittsburgh and the call came in at 2:45. the pastor telling me it wasfei. firefighters say it is too dangerous to go inside. part of the roof has collapsed. they are spraying outside. there was a back draft phenomenon that happened that blew out the doors and the windows, just a really tough fire for them to battle. the pastor tells me they spent a lot of money on major upgrades, new seeds, new solar panels. they know it is a building and they are grateful no one was hurt. they cannot help bu

amy? amy: hospitals watch nervously and brace as i watch these numbers go up. i have some possibly good news in this story of high case rates. doctors say this surge could help the bait area gain a higher immunity for future strength of covid going forward. but we need to deal with this surge first. they are seeing an uptick in hospitalizations over the last week. they believe the vaccines are keeping those to a manageable number. as far as why we are seeing a surge here, dr. say it could be because our area has such a high vaccination rate. >> because we were good for so long, we were susceptible to getting infected with a virus that has mutated a lot. now vaccines do not recognize it that easily. amy: here is a look at the number of covid cases in the bay area. seeing the most now followed by alameda and followed by contra county. this is making the bay area the saxon -- the section of the state with the highest. doctors say so many people will be missing work during this surge. expect to see an impact where you shop, where you eat, maybe your own work ways.

reporter amy hollyfield is joining us live in san jose. amy: good morning. vta workers will gather for a ceremony at 6:30 this morning to honor and remember their coworkers who were killed one year ago today. nine people were shot to death by a disgruntled vta worker as they gathered for a meeting in the downtown san jose railyard at 6:30 in the morning on may 26, 2021. the killer then shot and killed himself when police showed up. vta trains did not run for three months after the murders as the agency geving employees who are still in a lot of pain today. >> we knew this was going to be a very tough day for all of our employees, their families, lots of friends, people who we used to see. we had someone the other day who said so and so is to come in for coffee every morning before his shift and now he does not come in anymore. the impact on people, not only on our vta family, our community , but on our whole community, is still very severe. amy: the san jose city council proclaimed a day of remembrance for the victims at its meeting on tuesday and city hall

amy hollyfield joins us with the details. amy: good morning. as doctors say, there is a lot of covid out there. 9 of the top 10 counties with the most covid are in the bay area. doctors say a lot has to do with people getting back to normal, living their lives, letting their defenses down and cases going up. with so many variants, some doctors think it might be time for a new vaccine. there is still some good news. hospitals are not being overrun. >> what is happening is the cases go up but hospitalizations stay low. that was true for the vaccinated with omicron and delta, but now it is everyone because there is so much natural immunity. amy: we asked doctors why the bay area is seeing more cases than other counties. they say it could be because other counties had higher case rates this past winter than the bay area and built up better immunity than the vaccine in the short run. another doctor said it could be because we test more in the bay area so we know of more cases. all four doctors we spoke with said the way to keep going forward is vacc

hey, amy. >> reporter: hey, michael. yes, this is little texas right here, my new best friend for the day and we're here, yes, in fort worth. it is such a special place. it looks like you're on a movie set but there is so much history. back in the late 1800s, this was the final stop for cowboys to get their supplies ready as they headed up north driving their cattle up north and today this is home to the world's largest twice daily cattle drive where you'll see the stars of the show, the texas longhorns, the good folks here in fort worth are going to have a special early morning cattle drive coming up in just a couple of moments and i was able to spend some time with the herd drovers and the trail boss here in fort worth. she showed me the ropes. there were ropes, bullwhips, saddles. i learned how to be my own trail boss. we'll take you along for the journey coming up. there's a lot of people you will meet and a lot of cool gentle giants still untamed and we need those drovers to get them up and down the streets. >> back

some catalyst, amy, that you are watching, is that the next fed meeting? is it something else or just going to be really a crazy time until the markets force selling or liquidation >> unfortunately it is going to be the full out capitulation which i don't think we have seen yet or some resolution of something major. we know that can't be the fed in the sense it will take them time to get to the neutral rate it could potentially come from something that would surprise you that earlier resolution to the ukraine situation which i don't think anyone has priced in it is interesting because at these levels, one thing we were speaking with our team and clients yesterday is at this point, what is the trade if it is true that people have de-risk, there is a lot of sideline money could the pain trade be to the upside an upside tail event, then what in reality is a scramble to get back into the pool you may see volatility rise or markets rise as well >> crazy time right now. amy silverman. before we go, what is the number one question you get from clients? >> i think

amy: true. hospitals are bracing for this rise in cases and what it could mean for hospitals, but doctors say there could be a little bit of good news in this surge. they say this surge could help the bay area gain a hybrid immunity for future strains going forward but we need to deal with this surge now. bay area medical professionals are seeing an uptick in hospitalizations but they believe vaccines are helping keep those to a manageable number. as far as why we are seeing a surge, it could be because our area has been so restrictive and has had such a high vaccination rate. >> because we were good for so long, we are susceptible to getting infected with a virus that's mutated a lot so that our vaccines don't recognize it that easily. >> here's a look at the number of covid cases in the bay area right now. santa clara county is seeing the most followed by alameda and contra costa county. this is making the bay area the section of the state with the highest rate of new infections. this is a big
