to this day stanford is still called the farm. the stanford ended up engaging frederick law olmsted for the campus. often contemptuous collaboration with olmsted resulted in a california mission expired clustered quadrangle. memorial church anchoring its center and the buildings at local samsung was designed by hh richardson errors. coolidge was the name designer of the buildings for the stanford campus. it's no secret that leland and stanford olmsted had a very contentious path and leland was no angel. there's two books out, one is called the founders and the architects of this details the struggles that leland and olmsted had and it's a little almost pamphlet sized book. there in the archives of stanford there are so many letters written by olmsted. like eight pages long handwritten trying to explain to leland what the ideas are. there's a new book that's out called the scandal in life of leland stanford. he was not a very nice man. he had a lot of dealings not only in the campus but with his partners and bills dennis and elsewh

that was stanford. and in the 19th century, the hospital moved from san francisco back to the campus. and it was up here in the corner and it was really far away. and so no one paid attention to what the architecture looked like, because it wasn't part of the main academic campus. but edward stone and thomas church did their version and interpretation of the main quad. but in modernist terms. so they might have articulated country as the walls that resemble the sandstone, very modern. and as the campus grew in both directions, the medical center expanded and the campus all of a sudden would touch it. and academically, they said, we can invent great invention if these communicate, if the sciences and medicine cooperate in a building and if they can live together and learn together. and the trustees said, this building has to blend the architecture. so we had two problems. so as we are looking at with the school of medicine over the years, this is what evolved. and it had nothing to do with stanford other

it's not like stanford where it is flat. you are up on a hill. so what they did -- and i think it's easy to criticize them -- but this is suburb, basically. this is the onset of the suburban campus, where you are building lab buildings that are bigger than the buildings you have developed before. and there are three of them along roadsides, so it moves to accommodate the buildings. so duke is not unique in this. many, many university campuses have faced these same issues. so that was it. that was the olmsted brothers park. they worked all through the 19 50s. they did site plans for new buildings, planting plans. here are surface parking lots that they did, which is at the end, frustrating, but it's the reality of the work. they were solving problems, problems that landscape architects help to solve, to deal with all the cars. so further threatening the campus but they are doing work that really needs to be done. at the end of the 19 50s, you see the quad there. six of those seven buildings have been built. and so from an aerial perspective you se

one can't give any kind of overview of homesteads campus contribution without mentioning stanford it's one of the most iconic works and as much probably as jefferson's academical village in charlottesville. it's a superb example of collaboration with the architects, at least if not the client. olmsted was a genius at working with others and as its planning, logistics, all the parts stanford campuses is an exemplary of the vision of architecture and landscape is intertwined and being complementary and inseparable. you might also note that the title box reads fl and jc homestead architects, by this time the firm had evolved and his son was heavily involved in producing and managing the work. there are two things i wish to say regarding stanford, the range of his campus planning, what is to note that homestead senior's interest in the particularly of its regional and topographical context is a salient concern in all of its planning and later out of his sons and his departure from his own predilection for loosely organized arrangements of separate structures placed upon lanes and clearings

but, you know, you learn the history and it's the same with leyland stanford. you can't pull apart the designer and the client because they're working together in certain cases. that's certainly the case at duke. so the patriarch is washington duke, james and benjamin duke were part of the three that started w. duke and son's company tobacco in durham and then james duke, he's the one who moved to new york. started american tobacco and he's the one who came -- who had all of the money. but combined the three of them brought trinity college from rural north carolina into durham, which wasn't a whole lot more than rural at the time to be honest, but so they took their money and education was very important to them. and educating the people of north carolina was very important to them. so these are important names to know. and trinity college, this is -- this you see --you see what it was, the little red line there. it came to durham in 1892, very small, very slow growing. so trinity, one of the requirements to get the money, washington duke gave $300,000.01 of th
