. >> numerous wind damage and flooding reports across the bay area. each of these icons is either a flooding or wind damage report, recently near dublin there is ponding on the roadway here, near the 580 junction which will cause major headaches on the evening commute. the rain continues to surge in, we had a break here and there but now another band of heavy rain is pushing and through the pacific. most widespread and heavy rain continuing through this evening but it is going to taper off as we head into early tomorrow morning. how much rain we picked up so far? a lot. almost 10 inches, almost 8.5 inches, over five dij inches in the oakland hills. 6/10 of an inch of rain so far in san jose. some of the heaviest rain is going to fall over the southern half of the area into the evening. there is a flash flood watch in effect in and around the burn scar in the santa cruz mountains. san mateo county and northwestern santa cruz county. heavy rain with not just flooding but also rockslides and debris flows within that burn scar outlined in red on the map.

crime spree across the bay area. good afternoon, i'm lynn keys. >>> in just about an hour attorney general rob want that will give a major update on a case. >> what we can expect, jocelyn? >> reporter: you can see behind me they are starting to set up for this press conference. today the attorney general is expected to make an announcement for what they call is a major update in a theft case here in the bay area and really we have seen this increase in thefts happening throughout the bay area in the last couple of weeks. this is one of the more recent ones at san jose in eastridge center yesterday. the video shows a group of five people wearing hoodies and masks as they walked in and smashed the glass cases stealing jewelry. the owner says it all happened in about 15 seconds around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. this has businesses change the way they operate. during a conversation with the sacramento press club we understand the attorney general was asked about why he thought this was happening. he said it is hard to speculat

right now most of the bay area down at d 2, which is severe and still extreme, the area in red across potions of the east bay. what's helped us out obviously has been the wet winter in the northern california area. also the sierra snow pack, which is off to a record start since october 1st. closer to home here in the bay area, we've had rain totals from san francisco northward about 200% of average. so that is finding its way now down into our reservoir systems, especially up toward marin. east bay reservoirs 87%. but notice the south bay. even lexington at 48.8 is a 25-foot rise since december 1st. so as the rain season moves forward, january is the biggest month for rain and sierra snow. so the important thing here is while we're off to this great start, three more months to go, including the snow pack, with average to slightly above average rain and snow, that droud picture could continue to unwind as we approach spring. back to you. >> okay. >>> december's record rain has charged up the bay area's reservoirs. but water managers say our water supply is better but still not great. a

. >>> live look outside across the bay area. cold foggy skies and we could see some scattered showers this evening. >> chief meteorologist paul hagan is tracking the wet weather for us. >> this could be like we had 48 hours ago with a passing shower or two, not much more than a trace of rain but we will take it. right now the radar is largely blank. it is not dry, there is mist and drizzle and fog keeping things just damp but those droplets just hang in the air. they don't fall, and it is the falling raindrops that show up on radar. we will see those especially into tonight. rain chances will peak after midnight and before the sun comes up early on thursday morning when we try out for a few days. there is a much better chance of more substantial and long- lived rental in the forecast as we enter the first half of next week. we will talk about that in just a few minutes. >> we will see you then. now to the coronavirus. kaiser permanente says that 11 of its vaccinated and boosted workers from its oakland medical center were a part

the omicron variant beds in the bay area. >> santa clara county is reporting its first case of that new strain. about this time last year, california was seeing a huge spike in new cases with a 7 day positivity rate at 12.2%. >> the good news is we are now at 2.7%, but as kpix 5 shawn chitnis reports , health officials are warning people not to let their guard down. >> reporter: another omicron case in the bay area, and this person was about to get their booster shot before they were infected. health leaders say it is a warning that went into doses of the vaccine isn't enough. >> we know that immunity wanes with the primary series, and that is why the booster is, every day with and how important it is. >> reporter: guidance backed up by new data released in the state. unvaccinated people are more likely to get covid, more likely to get hospitalized, and more likely to die compared to those who got the vaccine. >> we really want to urge people that they need the booster. now we want to consider it part of the primary series. we need to add that on is a necessity. >> reporter: back in oct

for the southern half of the bay area, it will not be as much. less than a quarter of an inch in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains. at least a little bit on top of the close to inch picked up over the past couple days. it is not going to fall heavily enough that we will see flooding issues. another round of snow for the sierra. another foot to two feet adding up on top of the several feet they accumulated so far this week. we have another chance of rain further down the line. we have a dry break late in the forecast. during the day on sunday, i think rain chances will remain minted, but sunday night, continuing monday and tuesday, another good chance of showers. increasing challenges that this may be another atmospheric river headed our way. this is the eight to 14 day rainfall prediction. a significant chance of above average rainfall right around the bay area. this takes us through christmas weekend. if you have family coming into town, make sure they bring their rain jackets. looking from the top of mount diablo, clouds in the distan

for now it's fog that is setting up around the bay area. maybe not around san francisco where it's 52, or the tri-valley, you can see 580 clearly around dublin, pleasanton, livermore. 43, chilly. there's walnut creek, visibility a quarter mile at times. san jose too now starting to see some of that fog settling into the santa clara valley as well. with these light winds and high pressure, another day of moderate air quality tomorrow. i think this will improve as the wind picks up at times this week and you get these storm systems moving through. we should be back in green by midweek, heading into next weekend. the issue short-term is the visibility in miles, down to a quarter mile. novato, it's dropped less than a quarter mile, tough driving conditions. marin county, concord, even san jose may see patchy, dense fog for the morning. we begin the day in the 40s with low clouds. increasing clouds during the day. it's going to limit how much sunshine we get to warm up our daytime highs. i brought these numbers down. we should see mid to upper 5
