most people in virginia, over half of the people in northern virginia. most of those people work for the federal government and they're doing fine. there is no job you can take for $15 an hour. they are all paying more because people will stay home instead of working for $15 an hour. so the money, the message, and the momentum was unyoungkin's side. bill hemmer did a great job on this board. i think he would be hard pressed to find a single place where glenn youngkin didn't improve for the republican party in every county and municipality. >> bill: you are right about that. youngkin's speech at 1:30 last night talked about building 20 new charter schools and talked about going into the public schools and giving school choice. i don't know if he can get it done. you have the legislature and house side too, won that too by a small margin in virginia. do you think the results in virginia were more about youngkin and his message or more about joe biden and how he has mismanaged issue after issue for the past 10 months? >> well, bill, i think it's both. obvio

virginia, this is happening here. i mean, there's a lot of people engaged. >> we were laughing because on the way out from leesburg we drove d.c. fairfax county blue electorate there. overwhelming voted for biden there were parents, kids, it was like a party. it it was halloween or youngkin. there is enormous amount of energy. you feel it you get a sense have you lived around the area for a long time, bret. i went to school at uva law school. i lived on and off in virginia for almost 25 years. this is different youngkin has run a smart campaign i think. >> bret: that issue of education we were talking about tellerrier with mo and reince. it does cross party lines and hit suburbs and parents who are concerned no matter what party. >> laura: one group democrats couldn't afford to alienate suburban women. critical to election victory in 2020. they were a deficit for trump in 2020. the democrats managed nationally, i think, and in virginia, slowly but surely eroding their majority base among suburban women education, whet

youngkin decided he was going to run a virginia campaign focusing on virginia issues and then mcauliffe made this crazy comment in the debate that he didn't want parents to be involved in schools. that began to eat him up and then the school system -- the loudoun county school system turned out that they had actually lied to the parents about a girl who was raped in the girls room by a guy in a dress and doctor was transferred to a different school without telling them about his problems and he attacked another girl in a different school. so people felt that the whole system was lying to them, and i think brilliantly, the youngkin team had an ad up less than 12 hours after mcauliffe made this mistake and they had been pounding away education in the last poll is the number one issue in virginia, more than the economy, and both of those, frankly, hurt mcauliffe. i think you're going to have -- as you put it pretty well, this is the first beyond biden election, the outcome occurs the way we think it will, for governor or lieutenant governor or attorney general end assembly, this is going t

if we go back to virginia. we get lots of e-mails and messages about our screen there that we went from 97 percent to 95 percent. i and the questions to the decision desk and basically the expected vote number as an estimate and the turnouts and some of these areas are greater than expected. we have up on the screen these different numbers and we are saying that they have these, yo just talked about 40 percent an some areas in big numbers that have not been counted and there is lots of questions about how these people are dealing with this and each individual county. >> is that for me? >> i will try to answer it the best way i can. for example, here in loudoun county the estimated number is 99 percent. if we are going through this throughout the night, sometimes it was at 80 percent, and that was just an estimate for what w believe based on the numbers fo the governor's race from four years ago. so that is factored into this equation. when you do get a big turnout, it is hard to know who is doing early vote by

. >> virginia not governed the way that other states that stayed open, virginia maybe not worst, but it was not doing well. and there were a lot of businesses that were struggling, you saw virginia's you know paying people not to work and being surprised why people don't work, if you pay them not to work, don't be alarmed if they don't fill jobs, and proposal that have been coming forward make it worse. they increase our electricity bills and gasoline costs, increase cost of food and everything else. other thing that glenn youngkin did that i think was important is, make sure that virginians knew how we were lagging. he would talk in this many speeches, how virginia was really falling behind. north carolina of growing 8 times as fast in jobs than virginia, tennessee, 6 times faster. states we compete with are tennessee, and carolinas, and florida and georgia, you need to reduce cost of living and make sure tax are competitively low, a big issue in virginia was right to work law, further state north on eastern seaboard with right to work law. i would say, i would gettings in virginia

in virginia. what's been happening basically is glenn youngkin the republican put up a very big lead here in virginia by rolling up massive margins in republican-friendly areas of the state. and what's been happening over the last hour or so is absentee votes in more democratic-friendly bigger, more democratic-friendly counties have been adding in and chipping into that. the problem for mcauliffe is he's running out of places to make up 84,000 votes. the story of the night here in virginia. we can show it to you. take a look. we'll start right outside washington, d.c. biggest county in virginia. fairfax county here. we knew the democrats were going to win this county. the question tonight was how big would terry mcauliffe win it by? was terry mcauliffe going to get a number like joe biden got here, which was basically 70%, or was glenn youngkin going to make inroads here? was glenn youngkin going to win back some of those suburban voters who left the republican party because of donald trump? glenn

let's look at virginia right now. this is also very interesting in terms of the national trends, in terms of the overall story. you can see glenn youngkin there. we had projected as the winner of that race by about 2 points. a lot of focus has been on the suburbs surrounding washington, d.c. and richmond, virginia. and, yes, glenn youngkin did well there. he held his own. take a look at loudoun county there. this is a county that joe biden won by more than 20 points. you can see terry mcauliffe's edge was just 11 points. so, yes, glenn youngkin was able to make inroads in the suburbs, but if you want to know where glenn youngkin made the biggest gains, and had the biggest edge, i want to compare this race to the race four years ago that was won by the democrat ralph northam. and i want to look at where terry mcauliffe under performed ralph northam, did significantly worse than the democrat four years ago. you can see the areas where terry mcauliffe did worse, primarily these red rural counties. not the suburbs here. y

let's go to virginia now. give us the port mortem on the trends that stuck out to you in the commonwealth, and what happened that led to such a swing from what we saw in 2020? this is a state that you correct me if i'm wrong, joe biden won it by double digits? >> ten points. and we've been talking for years about there's been a long-term trend in virginia going from a red state once upon a time to a swing state. after 2020 we said this is just a blue state now. it's moved too far away from the republican party. so what happened last night? well, let's start in the area that more than any other area in virginia had moved away from the republican party in the age of donald trump. that is northern virginia. the suburbs of washington d.c. here. densely populated. the biggest population center in the state. here's what i mean by how you're seeing loudoun county how it went last night. mcauliffe wins by ten. okay. the democrat won it. republicans were ecstatic to see this number. look how it turned last year. this w

virginia >> let's go to virginia for second. we have a call to make for a second right now, while we have calls that glenn youngkin will be the governor, we now have a call for the lieutenant governor of virginia, the republican, sears will become the lieutenant governor of the commonwealth of virginia, just over that point for half a second. in virginia it's the same situation, we had very heavy day of voting, very heavy turnout across the, stay generally. the day of voting is what decided what happened in terms of how glenn youngkin and sears have won this thing. still very much a contest for control of the state legislature in virginia. right now it's looking like it's still about 50/50, democrats may hold on to control the legislature. >> it's very close on that front, we can actually show you, here you go, here is the lieutenant governor result for jinah, and i think it jumps right out of, you again, this is lieutenant governor results, this is the governor result they're tracking almost perfectly here. this is one of those

he was born in virginia. worked in washington, but really came across as someone, you know, who simply is not beholden to either party. but the key voters here are those voters in the middle. virginia does not register voters by party affiliation. so that adds a bit of mystery going into this evening. no registered republicans or registered democrats. glenn youngkin is going after some of those voters in the middle who are simply fed up with the direction of their local governments, state governments and perhaps even their federal governments. so, of course, terry mcauliffe has been governor before. he has a record. he served for four years in 2014 to 2018. and it simply has been an uphill climb for democrats. democrats have shown a lack of enthusiasm throughout the final stages of this campaign, and we've seen the democratic divide in washington. there's been no action on infrastructure. no action on the broader build back better agenda yet. so this is all of these things are really leading into what could b

i said this before and wrote it in my piece for fox, whether mcauliffe lost virginia or won virginia, if you win, by a very tight margin and either party knows this it is a red flag. there is an alarm that goes out and you've got to say what did we do wrong, what can we do better, how do we not repeat this and that is the same thing going on in new jersey. in new jersey we have middlesex, s6, bergen have votes coming in, they still have mail in votes that come in and all of that does typically lean democratic and i think we take murphy over that 2000 point spread into go higher but again, not as high as we would like to see like a 9% lead like he had going into this election. >> what a when it would be for the gop of jack ciattarelli can pull this one off not just because he is a dynamic personality but because it says a lot about what people in the garden state think about the job phil murphy is done and maybe more broadly the job president biden has done. do you think the executive in washington has been a drag on races like we've seen in new jersey and virginia my reading too much

if you look at a state like virginia it was a d+ ten. that means a d+ ten state became in our plus two state that is a 12-point swing which means their districts all across the country represented by democrats in at least d+ five, six, seven, ten districts that have to look in the mere saying am i gonna keep voting for the big government socialism. they will have a reckoning it's time to work with republicans on solutions that address crisis and problems that families are facing. this majority led by speaker pelosi has not brought up a bill in over a month to address the crisis families like inflation and high gas prices in the border crisis. their answer is to go the opposite direction. they want to tax people more so they can give a $450,000 checks the people who come here illegally. people are rejecting those radical ideas. i'll tell you as republicans are focus on the common sense agenda to get this country back on track and work with the parents who want to take their school back. our leader has led the charge to layout the bold vis

todd: let's bring in george allen, former governor of virginia and virginia senator. once to follow up on something ron said. how much of a response the last 10 months of the biden dumpster fire was this win by glenn youngkin? >> the policies are a part of it. on the campaign trail, have you been to a grocery store or gas station lately? the skyrocketing prices for gasoline are being felt. one of his first acts on the first day was to shutdown the keystone pipeline, that lets russia have a gas pipeline into germany, begging saudi arabia to increase oil production. in oklahoma, north dakota increased production at all of this is unnecessary. when they say if they pass that bill, what is that going to do? for gas prices? it will only increase them and increase electricity bills. what happens in washington, even the crisis on the border, in afghanistan, terrible disapproval ratings of president biden but glenn, glenn youngkin, talking about the matter to virginians. by reducing taxes among groceries and reducing other taxes, mcauliffe is on the side of raising taxes. a k

virginia -- excuse me, was a 16. virginia was a ten-point state. this went on paper, more in reach for the republicans. you can see here, the democratic margin in virginia comes from northern virginia, high population, suburbs outside washington, d.c. also, democrats lately, hen rico county, chesterfield county, right outside of richmond. democrats have been driving up numbers in those places, as well. so one question we're looking at tonight, glenn youngkin, his campaign. they've really made ate priority. they think they can make inroads in the suburbs of d.c. and richmond, places where donald trump really put republicans in the hole the last couple of elections. can they make those inroads there? also, you've got to look at the shenandoah valley, southwestern virginia. core republican areas. rural. very heavily republican. very heavily pro-trump. can youngkin get the same kind of support in this region that donald trump did? because trump did better than republicans have historically done in a lot of these counties. and we'll also be certainly lo

nice to meet you, virginia. in 2019 democrats won control of the virginia legislature, the house and senate for the first time in 25 years. they also have a democratic governor. they worked on health insurance and protecting voting rights and sending people to jail for pot, all of the stuff they can do something about when they hold power. democrats have been in power in virginia for the past couple years. there are 100 seats in the house of delegates in virginia. of those, democrats hold 55 of those. that's their majority. every single one of those seats in up tomorrow. that means if the republicans are able to slip six seats in the legislature from blue to red, republicans will take back control after democrats just having control for two years. republicans are hoping to stop all of it and presumably roll it back and then some. the vast majority of republican candidates running in virginia are way over on the trump side of the number line. many are running on saying the 2020 election was stolen and they want a
