the tsa has video of the checkpoint. they have a picture of this person and law enforcement is looking for them. just to clarify one thing, it's the tsa's job to make sure a gun or any type of weapon does not get from the public side of the airport to the secure side of the airport. once a passenger runs away with a gun, that becomes a law enforcement issue, not a tsa issue. they are not law enforcement officers. >> got it. >> one other thing to consider, yasmin, is that you may know this from living in atlanta, georgia is an open carry state, which means people are allowed to walk around with -- if they have permits, with weapons. and this is something that jim cavanaugh can probably weigh in on better than i can, but there are a number of states around the country where you're allowed to -- you're legally allowed to carry a weapon. now, the tsa this year has found a record number of guns. most of the time it's unintentional. it was in a bag. they didn't realize it. they bring it to the checkpoint and in states like geo

as you have already heard, we wrote the tsa administrator to encourage tsa to increase murder imposes robust enforcement, the key ton deterring unacceptable behavior. i am a firm believer having a strong workforce is an essential component having national security infrastructure. these essential workers are not only placing tasks for unruly passengers daily risk of being affected by the covid virus while performing their duties. over 11000 tsa employees have tested positive for covid-19 and at least 32 have died. long-standing issues like lack of fair pay continues to affect their workforce. the biden administration has shown encouragingng signs of support for workers, we still have a way to go in terms of providing and improving worker conditions. tsa continues to rank at or near annual best place to work while low morale contribute to high turnover. if tsa cannot have a dedicated workforce, it will struggle to keep up with increasing passenger volume. all of these factors make this hearing timely and especially i am eager here to hear about our witnesses who have a unique perspectiv

tsa work at sfo? >> if you look carefully at the uniforms of many people you'll see at the airport at sfo you'll notice they're blue and they have a flag, but it doesn't say tsa. it says cas, that's a private security contractor so we might be in good shape at sfo. there are tsa people around the country and might also be tsa people at sfo. we don't know so again you need to be prepared. >> give us some pro tips. what do we do or not do? >> three steps. here's what i want you to do arrive early. >> but let's be honest i've got kids, sometimes i can't get out the door early. >> download the airline app. this is some airline lingo, raj. what does that mean? >> i don't know. >> that means zero value after departure. many airline tickets i would venture most have that buried in them. what that means is if you're on the 4:16 flight and you show up at 4:17, that means what you paid for your ticket has zero bearing on what it takes to get you on the next flight. you'll have to start over again over from scra

found 450 guns at the atlanta airport tsa checkpoints alone. this one is now just the latest one. the passenger, according to the tsa statement, came to the checkpoint. the machine there was able to detect there was a firearm in this person's bag and then the transportation security officer according to the tsa began inspecting the bag and that's when this passenger lunged at the gun and set it off. we also know that this passenger ran out of the airport. it is not necessarily clear if this passenger was apprehended or not. what's also not clear is the severity of the three people injured. the tsa sites early reports as the source of these three injuries, so we're getting some answers here, but there's still some questions about just exactly how this went down. what type of gun this was. you know, the tsa has told me that the big challenge when it comes to keeping guns out of carryon bags, illegal, by the way. you can bring a gun in a checked bag pending certain circumstances and criteria, but the issue they say is that there are just so many g

this is where tsa does have security control. the rules generally, and this is why there's going to be an investigation, is you can transport unloaded firearms in what's called a locked, hard-sided container as checked baggage. so this is where people who want to transport guns, which is legitimate, are allowed to do so. you also have to declare it, the gun, and ammunition at time of check-in. so it's not unlike a piece of precious cargo, a pet or a piece of art that you need the airlines to know it is actually being checked. so it is very rare to have a civilian have access. what we do know -- that's important to know, or was there a breach in the security clearance that tsa didn't pick up. so that's important. this is the largest airport in the u.s. this is a heavy, massively heavy travel weekend, after a pandemic. we are all just beginning to travel again, many of us, many people taking their first flight for a very long time this weekend, and so that combination has led to this. like what chief ramsey said, the atlanta airpor

it's a good sign that the tsa is catching these firearms. but it's also terrible in the other side that people are either forgetting them or intentionally trying to bring them in. this year so far the first ten months we have now surpassed the full year record before the pandemic in 2019 of more than 4,400 firearms confiscated. it's a big problem, and atlanta, unfortunately, is leading the way with more than 450 or so firearms being confiscated so far this year during a pandemic. this is something that people are talking about, this is on the minds of people as they make their way through. but we have the thanksgiving holiday right around the corner. so people are back at the airport. it feels like it's back to normal. but you still see all of the emergency vehicles that are normally here. you got an extra eye on them today, jim, knowing what happened just yesterday. >> yeah. i mean, just such a scary situation, and everybody's lucky in this just didn't turn out much, much worse. nadia, thanks so much for that report. we appreciate it. >>> m

there is no tsa pre-check. everyone is barefoot, trying to get out their laptops, taking off jackets and waiting in these long, long, long lines and it's just packed here. >> all right. isabel. thanks for that report. nadia romero is also live for us. what do we know about this accidental discharge? i think we got a lot of new information from andy with the airport. >> yeah, jim. i just want to digest that a little bit more. when we look at reporting coming from the tsa, they said in the last ten months, they saw some 4600 firearms being brought through the tsa across the country. the majority of them loaded firearms. this is a major issue we're seeing not only here in atlanta, but in other major airports across the country. it is a crime. a misdemeanor felony charge if you do try to bring that firearm on through a check point. $2500 for an unloaded weapon up to about $10,000 for a loaded weapon. so there are epenalties. of course the investigation into the man who had his gun at this airport earlier this after
