loudoun county is going to be pivotal. it is a purple county that has gone to democrats for a couple of elections in a row. but, by no means, is it a democratic strong hold. and that seems to be ground zero. i'm going to be looking at a couple of other key areas. i'm going to be looking at the richmond suburbs and like co-county and chester field county. not long ago both of those solidly red and rico solidly bo blew now chesterfield can go either way. what do those numbers look like? i'm going to look at virginia beach which is also a pivotal jurisdiction. what's the turnout at the end of the night going to look like in fairfax county? largest county in the state, about as big of a democratic strong hold if turn out is high there, that's a good thing for mcauliffe. and if it is low, if it's going to be a longer night. >> bret: explain how the state, this commonwealth breaks down and a lot of times republicans obviously rely on the southern part of the states to turn out big numbers. but there aren't bigger cities down the

loudoun county. we are basically all in now in loudoun county. i believe there's one precinct outstanding in loudoun county. and this may be by itself tells the story of the night here. mcauliffe is going to win it. he's going to win it by basically ten points. right now it's actually 9.9 points. and we said at the start of the night youngkin didn't necessarily need to win loudoun county. he needed to eat into the big gains that the democrats made during the trump era. those are the big gains the democrats made in the trump era in loudoun county. they rolled it up to 25 points. youngkin has cut that more than in half tonight. and if you're a republican and you can get back in the game that way in northern virginia, then the other piece of of it is just turn out the vote that donald trump was able to turn out. i mean, wow, that's the other piece of the story tonight. just going from one county to another. one small county to another here in southwest virginia in particular. youngkin is meeting and exceeding the donald trump total. i'll just take y

i do want to see loudoun county in particular. we talked so much about it, this played a big part it in. i love when you compare it to 2017 and 2020. that puts a lot of perspective. >> i'll do look first and take you downstate and show you something that blue me away. loudoun county at 59%. youngkin is above the margin that he needed to get in that county. we just had a vote statewide in virginia 11 months ago, right? there was more than four million voters. tonight had about three million turn out in virginia. here's where it was on the presidential level on a percentage basis. biden was at 62% in loudoun county. let's see where it was four years ago. the governor's race in -- about 60% there for ralph northam. back to 2021. that's what we see on the board. sean, take you down here, this big swath of red here. a town called blacksburg, virginia. home of virginia tech in montgomery county. i thought the data was wrong. here you are at 89% reporting on a percentage basis but call it shy of 39%. youngkin is 60%. where were we in the

very energetic turnout in loudoun county. i was told by an election official a short time ago 40,400 people voted early. this official told me that's an astronomical number for an off year election, just on saturday 6,329 people voted in loudoun county for early voting. the 40,000 was the number of early votes. and that's a turnout of 32.8%. officials say they'll take those numbers. they like the numbers. let's see if numbers are good enough for terry mccauliffe or glenn youngkin tonight. >> interesting to hear from the voter, exhibit a of what people say is the number one issue, education. >>> another closely watched race, battle for governor of new jersey. >> if he wins tonight, phil murphy would be the first democratic governor reelected since the late 1970s, but he is facing what some say is a surprisingly strong challenge from jack chitereli. what are you seeing there? >> steady flow of people coming in and out of the polling location. you hit it on the nail when you talk about turnout. turnout in this race will be key.

more than 40,000 people voted early in loudoun county. over 6,300 people voted on saturday alone in early voting. as of today, though, as far as this morning is concerned, steady flow of voters at this elementary school. about 350 voters have come through the door so far. they had a line going out the door at 6:00 a.m. when they opened. they have strict rules for reporters going in, in live shots, transmitting in there. the long and short of it is i'm not really allowed to g in and talk with my photojournalist andrew smith. he can go in. i have to stay 40 feet outside the door. so andrew is going to take you inside where people are registering -- checking in to vote. they check in at that station there ahead of andrew. he's going to pan to his left and show you the voting stations there. they have nine voting stations where people will go to vote. again, a steady stream of voters coming through here, at least 350, according to the precinct captain here. and we've talked to election officials here in loudoun county and they say it's been v

they like what they're seeing in loudoun county. i've talked also to loudoun county officials, they say it has not been 2017 levels yet. here's one of the things that is really critical here to talk about. we've never seen an election quite like this. post-pandemic, early voting, we've never seen in a more normal election, and the guy here told me who is running this precinct said a lot of folks are still working from home. will we get the after-work rush? will we get the after-dinner rush? we don't know. a lot of things are still up in the air. being in touch with both campaigns, they're cautiously optimistic, but i would put the emphases on the caution. >> explain why youngkin is in this part of the state with his closing message? explain what loudoun county is as a national -- it's not really about education, it's race in the classroom. >> he's talking about critical race theory. he mentioned it last night. he said the first thing i'll do when i get elected is ban critical race theory. critical race theory is not even taught in v
