i'm jake tapper. we'll start with our money lead and a change of tone from the white house as it acknowledges the rising prices most of us are experiencing that they have downplayed will likely last much longer than expected. for weeks president biden has promised americans the inflation is only temporary but now is admitting the higher prices are slowing down the economic recovery from emergence out of the coronavirus pandemic and top biden officials are conceding it could be middle to end of next year, 2022, before we begin to see any improvement on prices at the store. just this week the bureau of labor statistics released data showing since last october 2020 gas prices have risen 50%. bacon and beef are up 20%. eggs, furniture, televisions all up double digits. the white house is scrambling to find new solutions convening frequent meetings of top economic experts. as cnn's phil mattingly reports, president biden is learning a tough lesson about how presidents get blamed for all events under their

i'm jake tapper. we've been watching discussions in the courtroom during the cross-examination of kyle rittenhouse who has surprisingly taken to testifying in his own defense in that kenosha, wisconsin, courtroom today. rittenhouse killed two people and injured another during protests in kenosha last august. rittenhouse says he did it in self-defense because he believed he was being attacked with lethal force at the time. let's get straight to sara sidner outside the courtroom in kenosha. rittenhouse's testimony has lasted several hours. it's had a few key moments. >> very key moments. what we heard is unusual, as you pointed out. it's unusual for a defendant to take the stand in any trial, certainly any criminal trial. in this case, we heard kyle rittenhouse's version of events from the time that he came into town to remove graffiti from a high school to the moments in which he ended up shooting three people. he details that very, very explicitly. and then the cross-examination, the prosecutor tries

they could be very effective, jake. it doesn't come without some holdouts still remaining and some fights as phil just alluded to in his piece. they could be very effective. there's been examples of thousands of police workers in new york expected to no longer be working by november first because they would not abide by mandates. so far the number is 34 people who have taken unpaid leave. united airlines put in vaccine mandates and had some 59% of their work force vaccinated before the mandates now close to 99%. it makes a difference. it is unfortunate that is what the response has to be in order to make this happen but we see it in the health care world as well. we've talked about this even prepandemic with flu shots for example across the board if you look at health care workers who have been vaccinated against the flu. it is around 80%. if you break it down in terms of where you have requirements, close to 94%, 95% in those places. 70% if you don't have requirements. it makes a difference. you would think people woul

jake, great seeing you. what's going on with the defense policy bill and efforts to keep the government open past friday. >> so let's take this issue by issue for a second. number one is defense policy. as you mentioned, republicans blocked efforts to overcome the filibuster last night to clear a procedural hurdle over concerns about amendments. we anticipate based on our reporting that those differences will be bridged. there'll be some sort of agreement to deal with amendments at some point. we also anticipate that government funding, although it's coming down to the wire once again, i feel like we talk about this every few months, it's coming down to the wire, but we anticipate some sort of agreement in the next couple of days. we don't anticipate a government shutdown, the house will take up a short-term government funding deal first that goes until the end of january. senate will take it up, crisis averted, most likely. then we get into the difficult issues. there's the debt ceiling for which we have no

i'm jake tapper. breaking news in the politics lead. moments ago, brand-new subpoenas were issued for former president trump's inner circle. the house select committee investigating the deadly january 6th insurrection is shifting into high gear, preparing to do battle with some pretty big names in the trump world. the panel says fueled the big lie and perhaps incited the violent insurrection. stephen miller, kayleigh mcenany and former white house presidential personnel office director john mcentee are three of the new names added to the long list of trump allies the panel wants to hear from. let's get right to brian nobles live from capitol hill. these are some really close allies of trump's. >> no doubt about it, jake. this is a group with very close tyce to the former president donald trump. ten subpoenas in all issued today by the january 6th select committee. but what remains to be seen is whether or not this committee will have the power to force this group of individuals to comply with their request. new targets to help uncover w

>> that's the big question here now, jake. we're waiting to see how exactly this plays out. i was inside the courtroom when this magistrate judge, judge robin mariweather said she would sane this arrest warrant. the question becomes, does steve bannon surrender or is he arrested. an arraignment date has not been set but his case was just assigned to a trump-appointed judge, judge carl nichols, who was appointed by donald trump in june 2019. so the question is, when does steve bannon possibly get arrested? when does he surrender? that still remains to be seen. but a federal grand jury handing down this two-count indictment this afternoon. this is a grand jury who at least heard from one witness as we saw today. our producer, hannah, has been staking this out for several weeks. today she noticed the activity. we came down to the courthouse. we saw an fbi agent going into the grand jury courtroom, presumably testifying, and then shortly thereafter, that's when two prosecutors from the u.s. attorney's office came out of the courtroom, walked two courtrooms down to the magistrate

>> quite the opposite, jake. i think senator manchin's concerns make the strongest possible case for build back better. one of the biggest expenses families face is child care. our bill will cut the cost of child care for middle class families in half. another thing that people are feeling the pinch on is prescription drugs. our build back better bill lowers the cost of prescription drugs, puts a cap on what seniors pay for their drugs. people are pinched by elder care costs. it brings that down. health insurance premiums. the bill brings that down. and for families with children, the bill provides a tax cut of $250 per child per month. i think if you are concerned about the cost of living, it's a concern here at the white house. it's a concern senator manchin shares. the build back better bill is the best answer we have to bring those costs down. it also does it without adding a penny to the federal debt. it's fully paid for. without raising a penny of taxes on families making less than $400,000 a year. >> senat

look, i'm less bearish on this than is jake. i don't think they're nowhere. i do think they're about to enter joe manchin's living room for the next month, basically. and what he says is going to be what goes in this bill. pelosi is jammed here a little bit. along the way, manchin i think had hoped to have company in being opposed to the paid family leave provisions, wanting to leave that out, do it in some future bill. by putting it in the house version and getting every house democrat to vote for it but one, now it will be joe manchin to be the grinch if he chooses to do so. that will be a tough call for him. but i think the reality, if this bill does make it through the senate, does make it through joe manchin's stripping elements out of it including potentially that, and make it back to the house, you're talking about something that is too big to fail for democrats and too close to the finish line to fall apart then. i think the house will ultimately have to pass whatever joe manchin's version of the build back better bill ends up being whenever they get
