the ioc president was not alone on this call with peng shuai. also on the line was the vice president of the chinese olympic committee. so viewers at home can make their own minds up about how free or not peng shuai may feel to speak given that there is a senior chinese official on the line. it's also important to note there is no mention of the sexual assault allegations that peng shuai made against a former communist party official right before she disappeared for the last couple of weeks. the ioc doesn't make any call for those allegations to be investigated further. it doesn't say whether thomas bach discussed those allegations with her or not. and the other thing that's worth noting is that the winter olympics in beijing are just a couple of weeks away at this point. so the international olympics committee are coordinating extremely closely with the chinese government to get those games going and may have an incentive to try to stay on the right side of the chinese government at this point. so that's what we know. this is the first known ca

. >> what can the ioc do? i mean, other than sort of raising awareness, can they demand to see her or what? i mean, how powerful is sort of tennis in china? how much -- how big of a deal are their sports stars? >> china has been using sports much like russia has for years as a marker of where it sees itself in the global community and its global ambitions. and i think most americans, when they think of that, think about basketball, but tennis is also a huge part of that. for the last five to ten years, china has been bidding on futures tournaments and juniors tournaments and just signed a couple of years ago a ten-year deal for the wta finals to be held there, so tennis is a huge deal. the wta coming out and calling for transparency and for assurances of her safety is a big deal, but the ioc also does have a lot of power here. you know, as you mentioned, the olympics are going to be held in beijing just in february. and the ioc likes to tout itself as a marker of democracy and women's equality, and you know, b
