acting was my social life when i was a journalist in wilmington, north carolina years ago. that is what i did in the evenings. we had theater companies, built that movie studio in the early 1980s and the town was ripe with actors. >> host: how did you learn to inhabit your grandfather skin? >> there are not a lot of good voice recordings we have some of the truman library but they are all old. they are black-and-white. they are teeny, the sound quality is not good his voice sounds very high. i think he raised it a bit anyway when he was speaking. he does not sound like the man i remember. but he was much older by the time i have memories of him for there are some audio recordings in the truman library of him explaining various aspects of his presidency or he's talking normally, quietly to an archivist. i use those who try to get his voice, accent and watch the old films for what he did with his hands, how he stood, even that is not completely accurate because he was always onstage fees always giving a speech, chopping the air like this and pointing. it's hard to find family
