thank you for your attention on this important issue. >> thank you ms. trujillo. please proceed with your testimony. >> good afternoon, chairman kelly, ranking member hide smith and members of the subcommittee. i'm the director of the arizona department of water resources. you for providing me an opportunity to testify on behalf of the state of arizona. i have submitted written testimony for the record, my test my today will highlight elements of that test my. drought climate changes have devastating impacts on the flow of the colorado river and the contents of lakes mead and powell. the declared shortage in 2022 will result in arizona losing 512,000 acres of water or 18% of its total colorado river entitlement. in agriculture, -- and intense eight-month effort resulted in arizonans coming together to provide financial resources and what water to partially mitigate those impacts. in 2023, projections of lake mead elevations are barely above the trigger for an additional 85 -- 80,000 feed. those cuts would primarily impact tribes and municipal water in our state. i

trujillo and mr. smoot husky -- mr. bouchard ski. i want to talk about these latest predictions. in august, the bureau issued a two-year projection that water levels would remain below a thousand and the water cutbacks for arizona and nevada. lake powell would lose water but remain above the minimum power pool level and that is the elevation level where the glen canyon dam would have to pause its hydropower operations. in september, the reclamation issued a new five year projection that painted a bleaker picture. lake powell could approach by -- approach deadpool by 2022 and lake mead's probability of cutbacks by 2023 increased. i think everybody benefits from using the best available science because we need to know what we are up against. could you walk us through why these projections changed from what we saw before september to what we saw with the five year projection? >> absolutely. thank you. part of the answer involves the continued desire for us to evolve and utilize the best available science and make sure that we can communicate with a variety of people who are watching
