maria: wow. we're also talking about a pretty heavy cost with regard to inflation that we're all paying more money for, everyday items. let's take a look at some of the moves that we've seen just as result of all of the free money since march when you signed, when the president signed into law the 1.9 trillion covid relief package. inflation soaring, gasoline up 42%, energy overall 25%. used cars and trucks, 24%. food up 4.5% likings, chicken, etc. -- like eggs. will we see these numbers worsen if this reconciliation plan goes through? >> i think we absolutely will because the government will inject trillions of dollars more into the economy. the effect was pretty immediate when the $1.9 trillion came through in march. month over month we've seen an increase in inflation. it's the most prefer niches tax -- pernicious tax at all. there are many aspects that may have to do with supply chain dislocations, but when they're killed our independence on energy, every american feels this when they go to t

maria. i appreciate it. so obviously tech did really well so far. you look at top line and bottom line, the key here in terms of the nuance view is who is getting operating leverage and who is not. we knew top line was going to be strong and it was. microsoft did 22%, 48% on bottom line. really strong numbers and you see the stock respond. google did pretty well obviously. they did really well and if you look at other companies outside of that that did not get operating leverage, facebook did not and you saw their stock that hit. i think there's a more nuance for you that's going on that we are seeing in the market. but the third quarter overall, most companies are still beating but keys here. asiaings had them softer in terms of percentage beat and sales growth is decelerating on average and then the third thing is the market reaction and we are going to see that today. earnings misses are getting finished down about 4% on average versus earnings beats that are going up modestly and you are

maria: yeah. so there are a lot of things that are uncertainties. let's go through a few of the unknowns. first off, the broad macro story. tomorrow we get the september jobs report. what are you looking for and what's priced into the market? we have economists expecting 500,000 jobs added to the economy last month with the unemployment rate ticking slightly lower to 5.1%. we've got our special coverage as always on jobs friday tomorrow morning, 8:00 a.m. eastern. but tell me how important this report is to the market, what's priced in and will we see a a reaction if those numbers materialize? >> i think this is a really tough report, maria, because this is a month where tip we see a huge seasonal adjustment from leisure and hospitality and it depends on how the bls treat this. you could see some -- this is one i would not be placing money on personally. i think there's a risk it comes in slightly light. i don't think it makes a difference to what the fed does. i think the fed, unless the number i

maria: yeah. i mean, that's an issue that i want to zero in on this morning because we've got all these technology names reporting earnings tonight. texas instruments and amd, they are right there at the new cleaf what's going won the chip shortage. what's your take on the i'm snack. >> with some of them, amd you could see that. what we look at is how they're managing liquidity through that part. we think microsoft will come out looking quite good. i think the chip shortage is a real issue. microsoft, it's much more on the software part. you have to look at how are they looking at financing the supply chains and, therefore, keeping the producers open. in the technology, not a big issue. therefore, we remain quite bullish that the companies that know how to manage the liquidity and supply chain accordingly will actually do very well so we expect good earnings out of those companies. maria: well, we'll see. i mean, even though we've had so much negative conversation around facebook, the company repo

maria. i don't like being correct with these types of predictions for purposes of certainly people's pockets but on the other hand, for purposes of investment, certainly this has been a good trade. and i continue to be bullish on 100. i think once we hit 100, that number in and of itself is a sticker shock to lots of governments around the world and we will see a call to arms immediately when we get even close to that number in order to go ahead and bring that price down to the extent it's possible. maria: yeah. david, tell me what's behind this move. i mean, obviously joe biden came in on day one, canceled the xl pipeline, made it very clear that he wants to fundamentally change this economy, less on fossil fuels. is that part of this? is it something else? i know you've got activists on the large oil companieses including exxon. what's your take on what's behind this move and what do you think the impact will be on the broader economy? >> okay. so maria, this started before joe biden simpl
