kristin welker is at the white house with more. >> reporter: still struggling to unite a democratic divide, over his multitrillion dollar spending plans, tonight president biden taking his sales pitch to his childhood hometown, scranton, pennsylvania >> folks, this is not just to invest in our physical infrastructure we also have to invest in our people. >> reporter: with moderate democrats rejecting the original $3.5 trillion price tag on his larger social policy and climate bill, the president now telling progressives that number will need to fall to between $1.75 and $1.9 trillion. among the cuts, tuition free community college could be dropped. and expanded child tax credit could be limited to just one year and his proposal significantly scaled back a key program aimed at incentivizing clean energy for the president, it is a step back from promises he made a just months ago. meanwhile, republicans saying the massive spending plans send prices rising even higher with inflation already soaring. >> it's just going to cause more inflation, hurt the poorest families >> reporter: tonight key

let's start with the drama on capitol hill, kristin welker, welcome back, your first day back from maternity leave, garrett haake, phillip rutger, donna edwards and brandon buck. so, walk us through what you're expecting later this evening when the january 6th committee gavels into session. what do we know? >> it will be straight forward. they're going to meet around 7:30. there is no reason to think this vote tonight won't unanimous. they're voting to recommend holding bannon in contempt. he says he is covered by former president trump on executive privilege and the committee thinks they can win out on all of that and they're going to move out quickly. the full house would have to act. that could be as soon as this week. and only then would this be referred to doj for a criminal prosecution. the point here, the house says, is they want to move quickly. they don't want to be caught waiting around for courts to act or in a long negotiation back and forth, they want to press ahead. >> first they have to get the d.o.j., merrick garland, to agree to proceed. then they have to go to the courts, g

garrett haake and kristin welker. we're talking about today or tomorrow. thanks so much to you. let's bring in our panel, eugene scott, and peter baker, chief white house correspondent. claire, how is this going? are you glad you're not a senate these days? republican the democratic caucus and the 50/50 senate? >> i miss my friends, but i do not miss what the senate has become. what we're seeing right now is how difficult it really is and these incredibly partisan times which as you know the senate has not been a hyperpartisan body. that has been changed. mitch mcconnell and his obstructionism. but i'll tell you what, i think they're going to land the plane. we have always had different opinions in our party. you goat majorities by having different opinions. you can elect people from place that's are not just bright blue. i think a lot of this is unfair to kirstin sinema. she is not talking what she is for and against in public. so everyone is trying to fill in the blinks. i think she's in favor of a bill that will be paid for but it will do major important things for the americ

with me now, ali vitale, pete williams and kristin welker. ali, what should we expect and what does it mean for bannon in practical terms? >> what this really kicks off is the beginning of the process for the committee to lend some teeth to their investigatory power. they are allowed to subpoena people to come before them. they knew they were not likely to see cooperation from a lot of these trump allies, especially in this first batch of subpoenas. knowing that, they wanted to start the process as soon as they could, because they knew that this was going to end up mired in the courts, answering questions about executive privilege and whether or not people like steve bannon, who were not white house officials at the time, are going to be part and privilege to that or if even the former president trump is still privilege to that. the biden white house says he cannot have that privilege. at the same time that is exactly the argument the former president is trying to leverage and his chief strategist is doing the same thing. we're going to see t
