so it's aimed right at the bay area. once we hit sunday night, and then it would continue into monday morning, and that's when we would see those rainfall totals add up. now, we are still several days out from this happening. but right now based on what we know, we'd see widespread rain a half to 2 1/2 inches. everyone is saying, okay, that's a big wide ranging amount of totals. that's because some of our valleys will be rain shadowed. we'll see a lot of the mountains, especially in the coast to the north bay take away a lot of that moisture so it's not going to leave as much for the valleys, especially potentially down towards the south bay. but everybody is going to get in on that rainfall. i think by monday morning we could see the chance of isolated street flooding. >> this is a tough questions because i know it's a broad question. >> yes. >> in terms of our fire danger and the drought, how much of an impact is having something like this really make? >> well, if we get that 2 1/2, maybe even higher amount of rainfall

anyone else thanks to this, nbc bay area's storm ranger. it's sitting on top of san bruno mountain helping us pick up any rain falling in the bay area. let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, we're just hours away from more rain. >> certainly. you can see with that storm ranger scan up, you always know it's active when you can see the red sweep right there moving through the bay area. we have just a couple of spotty showers near san francisco and off to the north bay. the other thing we had happening today was more of a southerly flow. this brought in some humidity and some milder air. we did have some 70s down in the south bay and also the east bay. let's get to that storm system. here it is. by 2:00 a.m. we've got rain over the north bay, some heavier pockets. i think it will be widespread from the north bay moving into the east bay and the peninsula. once we hit 5:00 a.m. tomorrow we should get showers right around 7:00 in the morning. now let's move it out to that sunday storm system and it is an atmospheric river. take a

we are dealing with wind advisories on most bay area bridges. bay bridge, golden gate bridge as well. i will zoom in on 880 and you see we are tracking brake lights along 880. we have one accident north of fremont. in the fremont area 880 both directions still shut down due to flooding, standing water. there is a lot of that on major freeways, parts of 101 as you head into the city. we saw flooding there. keep in mind traffic lights are out in certain areas so if you are pulling up to an intersection where the traffic light is out, treat it as a four way stop. expect a lot of puddling, standing water, and wet weather as you hit the roads. not a lot of cars but we are tracking brake lights along the nimitz freeway, 880. let's check in with justin andrews. he is on 880 in fremont. look at the back up behind you. >> reporter: absolutely. we are on south bound 880. we couldn't even get to the flooded area because of all the traffic. it is backed up and goes for miles. 880 as you mentioned it shut down between thornton and i believe mallory avenues n

the bay area, the rain not that far away. you see it rolling in to northern california to begin with those storms start to really get themselves together. now and some of the beginning to make its way into the north. and how about that doppler radar picking up some moderate to some heavier amounts of rainfall in northern sonoma county and all this is going to be spreading to the south throughout the night and it's tomorrow morning and then we're going to really just kind of keep things going. here's our long-range forecast and this was really impressive. this first storm system coming through tonight going to kind of stall out over the bay area, at least the flow is going to stall out of the bay area. that means we'll see all this moisture continue to work its way through our skies. so even as the main cold front begins to dissipate. we've got all that moisture that continues to pummel right to the bay area bringing more rain on and off through wednesday and thursday. you can see these waves of energy, they'll be breaks in be

this is the view from nbc bay area skyranger looking down on hemme avenue. eight-inch water line broke. it looked like a hot cauldron of boiling water as it gushed from underneath the street. it was like that for about nine hours until just before 10:00 this morning. east bay mud, which owns the lines, had trouble identifying which valves to shut off. one was difficult to access because it was under water due to this line break. it turns out that valve turning that valve wasn't enough to turn off the water so workers had to find another valve further from the line break. so right now we know at least 182 customers are without service but there could be more. we just don't have that number yet because they had to go find that other valve. a preschool next door was not flooded but they did cancel class today. we believe an elementary school nearby also canceled classes because of limited access to the school. most water did divert into a storm drain. some poured onto a private property. the woman who lived there ordered a bunch of sandbags to minimize the dama

lots of 50s in the bay area. east bay, 55, san francisco, 56, north bay at 52. we struggle tomorrow as clouds increase. overall, things don't really adjust too much in the bay area. we have 60s in the north bay. same for the east bay. south bay, 67 in san jose and san francisco, 64. once we hit the evening, we'll see rain chances return. let me show you more about that. there's the system. tomorrow afternoon, offshore. once we hit about 10:00 at night, we get into heavier pockets for the north bay and the peninsula. then overnight, we'll see rain chances for the east bay and the south bay. we'll hang onto spotty rain chance into the afternoon as we walk through wednesday as well. totals on this, definitely the highest to the north bay. around half to one inch for the north bay. some mountains in the east bay and peninsula are around three quarters inch, south bay, much less. the north bay, heaviest with the next storm system. i think we get through that okay but it is a system again, once we hit this weekend, if all things stay on track, you can see by saturday
