kpix5 justin andrews is live at castro valley high school. many parents will want to know what safety measures are in place in that district. >> reporter: the superintendent says all 13 schools in the district are well prepared for today and the rest of the school year as to covid fight continues. the district says it has very strict guidelines in place about quarantining, isolation, and procedures for dismissal. because of the recent spike in cases, district is requiring all 9,000 students to not only mask up indoors, but also outside, too during instruction, and while in crowded areas. the district says it will soon have a mobile testing site for students and staff. last week, the cdc reported an average of 192 pediatric patients a day at hospitals for covid. that's a more than 45% jump from the previous week among children 17 and younger. >> i think what we saw before we had vaccines available is we can successfully reopen schools. >> all we can do is keep following protocols. >> reporter: there are parents who chose distance learning last

justin andrews is live in pleasant hill. what happens if it a student ends up getting covid in the district? >> reporter: good question. about 24 hours ago the district rolled out plans and guidelines if a student catches covid-19, in order for the student to come back inside the building here are guidelines and things they must follow. a negative covid test. they must have written clearance from their doctor or ten day quarantine. in the guidelines if you don't feel well, the district is asking you to simply stay home. mount diablo unified is offering covid testing to students, staff, and their families at three locations. this is three days a week starting next week between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. currently testing is not required for students not showing symptoms but it is encouraged. at this point in the pandemic, dr. anthony fauci says it's our children, not the elderly, most at risk. >> the young are now more vulnerable because they are in the ho who is under vaccinated. when you look anywhere in a hospital, you are seeing

justin andrews is live at the school. things will certainly be different this year. >> reporter: it absolutely will. right now we've got crews back here setting up tables. they've gotten some hand sanitizer and are ready to welcome the students back. joining me is principal frost. how exciting is it? >>> good morning. thank you so much. absolutely excited. we are thrilled to welcome our students, staff, and community back. we have been planning for over a year. very excited this morning. >> reporter: what's going to be different for students and staff members this year? >> well one of the things you will see is our hand sanitizing stations. we have hand washing stations throughout our campus. you will see we have beautified some outdoor spaces so we can have classes and meetings outside. you will see that students will follow a block schedule this year so they're not transitioning to classes as often. they'll have maybe four or five classes a day rather than eight or nine classes. we have sanitizing kits in the classrooms

i am justin andrews in oakland. i am sure students and parents are watching us before they head out. some will be coming to montclair elementary school in oakland because, yes, today is the first day back for oakland unified. some students are ready but not all teachers are ready. some say they're sticking to zoom school until mandatory vaccinations are in place. governor newsom says he is confident reopening schools today without the mandate. recently the oakland teachers union ratified safety agreement with the school district, proper ventilation systems, supplying masks and gloves to everyone, classroom cleaning and disinfecting and offering covid testing every two weeks. still some teachers say they don't feel safe. the state superintendent will be visiting other schools throughout the district today there to welcome back students. >>> as we look toe roadways for your monday morning ride, busy at the bay bridge toll plaza. they're blocking those left lanes. it looks like traffic is still slow, metering lights ar

here's more on that story from justin andrews. >> reporter: students and staff tell me that they are excited to learn and interact. back inside the classroom, the first lesson is learning the changes. 11-year-old william is walking the halls getting the new layout of campus. the school bell is a sound that many students haven't heard in a while. because they have been in a zoom school. >> i didn't like it, i would be on a computer and there was a big lag. >> reporter: he's one of 320,000 students who returned to class. more restrooms and air purifiers all to help students and staff stay safe. >> are encouraged to take the classroom outside and not be limited to four walls. >> reporter: the principal said that they will be doing a restored return where teachers will use the first few weeks helping students readjust and reconnect with one another before jumping into academics. scene staff went through trauma informed training to remind ourselves to listen to our bodies and ourselves. and how to respond appropriately to each other. >> i get to meet more people and be social again instea

justin andrews is live this morning. not even 24 hours ago the district rolled out a detailed new covid guidelines. >> reporter: if you don't feel well, the district says stay home. if any students get covid-19, there are some guidelines and requirements they must follow before they come back inside the school building. they must have a negative covid test result, a written clearance from their doctor, or complete a ten day quarantine. three days a week the district is offering covid testing to students, staff, and their families. the locations are on your screen. testing begins next week. right now testing is not required for students not showing symptoms of covid-19 but it is encouraged. as they welcome students back, they're welcoming 50 new employees. the other day the district had a hiring fair and there are still dozens teacher and staff openings. there is a $1,500 hiring bonus too so you can get extra cash with that. students, teachers, visitors if you happen to come inside the school building, you must have your
