it was really amazing as all eyes were on the american superstar simone biles. she was going in that team event in the gymnastics. she did vault as the first piece of apparatus she was doing and was unhappy with it. afterwards she left the arena for a while and we were wondering what was going on. she did reappear and did seem to have her armed guards on what suggesting she would take part in the next event but however we send out a statement from the us gymnastics saying she would not compete in the rest of the event. now she has been afterwards since then, saying she needed to protect her mental health and she did not quite feel at the races within her performance and the fall and wanted to protect yourself and i think it's a really interesting discussion point for sports and athletes of the moment because we are so used to hearing about athletes getting their physical injuries but this was something that the mobile said is more prevalent in sport now and that she really wanted to protect her mind and it was important to remember that they may be superstar ath

simone biles' influence as a role model. what do you think her decision to step back and prioritize her health means for athletes around the world? >> everyone including myself, we are so proud of simone. she has done so much for the sport of gymnastics. she has been a leader. she has been very outspoken, which i love. i love her courage and humility to listen to her inner voice and to make the best decision for simone biles, to focus on her mental health and her physical health. she talked about having a little bit of a mental block, and people are calling it the twisties, where you get lost in the air. i went through that a lot on the uneven bars and through the vault. she made the decision to not compete, to not take that risk and not take that challenge. for her to do that, that takes some courage because she's committed her whole childhood for this moment. she sacrificed so much to make it now to her second olympic games, and this is not how she envisioned things would end. >> i want to ask you about the twisties. it's

simone biles is extraordinary. i think what we forget is what she has been through on a personal level. she's the only athlete who's competing -- or only gymnast that's competing in these olympics that was victimized by larry nassar. the only reason she decided to compete in this olympics is because, you know, there's a new crop of gymnasts. i think she takes her responsibility as an ambassador very seriously. so to think that some part of that would not weigh in on her or weigh on her is really -- it's asking a lot. and so in addition to the fact that simone biles essentially is the greatest gymnast ever, she is, she has done things so extraordinary that they can't even really figure out how to score her. that's how good that she is. so to act as if simone biles owed us anything is crazy. this woman has given this sport everything. even when the powers that be enabled somebody to violate her, she still gave it her all. so for people to question how mentally tough she is, i find that to be disgusting. >> paul, i wa
