the other part is archival research and most of the records for the project are in the national archives so i took many trips down there and have good friends that love me stay in their house and i became a frequent guest of theirs. there's a huge amount of material more than anyone could go through in a lifetime. there's a line about how when you are doing research you have to get every box out, churn every page. that only works if you have a decade or so to write the book and if you are on a shorter line like i was, you have to be more strategic. >> i did hire one researcher who helped me but most of the records are in washington and scattered across the entire country and archives in every state, state archives like trenton new jersey and also universities. you could never cover all of it so looking at that as much as i wanted to it was a little bit complicated doing this research like when i went to the national archives i met an archivist who was an expert on the new deal and he was telling me what to look for and finally said how many of these boxes do you want to look at. thankful
