so this report is is summarizing what units for massachusetts did in 1863. and as he's reading the section on the second, massachusetts infantry, and he's reading the section about the battle of gettysburg. the official report is stating that the second massachusetts was stuck in that field alone because quote the regimen on the right falls back and disorder. earlier in the assault so the attack is pretty chaotic. like i said, it splits into two actions very quickly, and there was nothing that either regimen could possibly have done to help the other one out. and yes the 27th, indiana did withdraw from the field first, but this report to many looks like it's placing the blame solely on the 27th for the failure of the attack and the casualties that the second massachusetts is taking. and as one might expect rankin is not very happy about this. so in 1892, he's writing a series of articles to the tribune. it's worth noting that this is only seven years after the placement of the monument. so he's got a fairly fresh trip to gettysburg in his mind. and he's argu
