i had just started on fireboats john jay harvey when the planes struck. i had been working essentially an apprenticeship, the type that very few still exist in this country. it was informal but it was an apprenticeship and i had been working for six months and i had never ever done this kind of work before. so i was just getting acclimated. i did not yet think of myself yet as a mariner in the way that one ends up doing after longer periods of time. so i came at this very new and i will never forget, i came over, i was in brooklyn that morning, and when i found out and was able to locate the fireboat and find out she was working down at the world trade center, i was able to get over by going to the fdny marine division and catching a ride with merchant mariners there on a little go fast boat, a pontoon boat. i will never forget the passage from the brooklyn navy yard over to the world financial center to where the boat was. the smoke, the overwhelm, realizing nothing would ever be the same for me ever again after whatever happened next, even though i did
