>> i think the most consequential example of that was eddie jacobson who was a 45-year friend of harry truman. in 1948 he walked into the oval office uninvited and speaking like only a friend could with that kind of history with harry truman convinced him to do what he didn't want to do which was recognize an independent state of israel. about two months after that harsh conversation where they basically really had it out with each other, truman listened to his friend. and the 11 minutes after the state of israel was declared in may of 1948 was the first foreign lead tore recognize the state. that is the most consequential. there are so many others i write about in the book that i didn't know about until i actually did the research. >> you dive into the impact these friends have on the presidency, but so what about presidents who don't have any close friends? >> well, i think we saw the example of that with our last president. obviously donald trump. i asked somebody very close to him who his first friend was. we went around and around for about two months. i wanted to write about it.

his friend, eddie jacobson lobbied him and lobbied him hard and that made a difference. talk about that. >> first of all, i love the way you described it in your book. you know the story as well as i do. they ran a haberdashery together for a couple years in kansas city. it fails in the early '20s, but they stay best friends when truman becomes president. i think it was a relationship built on total trust, total candor. jacobson could fly halfway across the country and march uninvited into the oval office one day in march of 1948 and essentially convince the president to meet with someone who was until then, this great british scientist who came up with a way to mass produce acetone which helped britton win the war in 1917. he gets him to do what you just said, joe. he knew what truman felt was right, recognize an independent state of israel. no aide or cabinet secretary could have spoken to him in that way. he said you have a hero in andrew jackson. i have a hero with heim whites man. don't resist, harry. harry listens to him. two months later harry is the first foreign

there was a very famous legal case in 1905, jacobson versus massachusetts. this had to do with smallpox and whether or not it was legal to get a smallpox vaccine. the supreme court said states have jurisdiction. it could become mandated. the administration but want to give that up to the states. but that would be the extreme case and it will take a lot of political capital to do. but there are other avenues. jonathan: let's talk about masking. "politico" this morning. even for government conduct, there was a case in 1905 called jacobson versus massachusetts. that is a case where a man challenged the requirement to get a small pox vaccine or you'd have to pay a $5 fine. the supreme court said that you could be required to do that. so the answer is likely yes. the supreme court has not really put many restrictions on businesses of this kind. they can cite the cdc recommendation for vaccine and they can say that this creates a business imperative for them, particularly with the rise of variants like the delta variant. >> sandra: very interesting. so far from what we're hearing. folks wanting to get back to work and keep their jobs with these companies and willing to come forward and get back in the building. there's going to be some workers that have objections to this for health reasons, religious reasons. so are the companies going to have to take that into consideration if somebody is hesitant to get the vaccine for health concerns? >> sandra, that is the most critical question. they have to balance particularly religious objections on a

eddy jacobson and harry truman ran a has been dashry together in kansas city in the early 1920s. it failed but they stayed best friends. truman later became president. one day, eddy gets a phone call in 1948 saying, harry truman is not seeing the key to truman deciding whether to recognize an independent state of israel. he flies across the country. he walks into the oval office unannounced, uninvited and has a knock-down, drag-out fight with his best friend harry truman. he never asked for anything from harry truman before. he said you owe it to him to see him. you know what you have to do here. truman turns his back on him, ponders the question, swivels back around and says, all right, you bald headed son of a b, i'll see him. he sees him. two months later, harry truman is the first foreign leader to recognize the independent foreign state of israel. what a remarkable story. >> really. it's all in this fascinating book. again, the book is called "first friends: the powerful unsung and unelected people who shaped our presidents." gary ginsburg, thank you so much. >> thank you fo
