and anna palmer, co-founder of punch bowl news as well as an msnbc contributor. so great to see all of you here. you know, reverend, al, when you think about the texas folks who are still in washington willing to walk out twice and you look at the women yesterday who were willing to get into good trouble as we think of one year ago tomorrow when john lewis passed, the courage, the intensity, but will it matter? will it make a difference? where do you think we are right now, rev? >> i think it will make a difference. last thursday when we met with president biden, leaders of eight national civil rights groups, and said we needed him to make this a bully pulpit issue. and he went tuesday and did so in philadelphia. i was there. i think the thing people are not considering is that the senate bill one, which we do not have the votes for, but then you have the john lewis voter bill, which has not even been completely written and put through the house, what the democrats need to do is say to manchin and some of the republicans -- and we met the civil rights leadership

we also have anna palmer, the cofounder of "punchbowl news." and joyce vance, who is a law professor at the university of alabama and an msnbc contributor. mike, the president is going to dial up the rhetoric today. beyond the rhetoric, there's not much that he can do legislatively as long as the filibuster remains and as long as there aren't ten republicans willing to support voting rights legislation. president biden talks all the time about how politics is the art of the possible. but right now, mike, what's possible? >> reporter: well, jeff, i have to say the last time i was in this room covering joe biden, he was a candidate fpresident. it was a little over a year ago. he was celebrating some primary night victories. at the time what the biden campaign thought was their formula for success was separating issues that have a very loud and vocal following among a very narrow slice of the electorate and separating it from the issues of importance to a much wider swath of the electorate. in the case of voting rights, you couldn't have a more wh

joining me now are our punch bowl news founder and msnbc contributor anna palmer. and associate editor anita kumar. i'll start with you, anna. biden will take his first presidential trip to illinois visiting crystal lake. it is a suburb that went for trump in 2020. are democrats starting to look does biden on the road in swing counties helpluly. that is a key trip for biden. certainly while donald trump did take it in 2020, there are members of congress like underwood, the democrat from illinois and others who want him to be there, want him to help make the case that democrats are getting the business of this country back in order. you're going to see him continue to talk about covid-19. the but there are a lot of challenges. the a lot of things, infrastructure, police reform, among many others that still haven't gotten finished and unclear when exactly they will. so he's going to be selling certainly the recovery, the reopening of this country. but there still a lot of questions that will remain. democrats are going to have to make peace on when it comes to 2022.

also with us anna palmer, founder and ceo of punch bowl news. and david plouffe, former obama campaign manager and an msnbc political analyst. congresswoman dean, you have been in the trenching as the congress has tried to hold president trump accountable. now this inis your regular that he birthed, what is your reaction to what has happened today both to speaker pelosi rejecting some of mccarthy's picks and then the response by mccarthy to pull out the football and go home and say that the republicans will no longer participate? >> well, senator, it's an honor to be with you today. thank you for inviting me. today was an important day and i support the speaker's decision this is a serious matter and requires serious people. we know the two whom she disqualified had disqualified themselves in their words and votes and actions. mr. mccarthy has lost all credibility. he deputized one of his members to come up with the independent commission which we did and then he pulled the rug out from under him today. i thought the same thing, he's taking his

palmer, founder of punchbowl news. good to see all of you this morning. sahil, more republicans voted for this than expected, including the senate so-called grim reaper, mitch mcconnell. but it does still have a way to go before reaching president biden's desk. what happens next? >> that's right, chris. this infrastructure deal passed a key test vote in the senate yesterday, but it faces a long and treacherous road to president biden's desk. now, it is in good shape in the senate. the fact it got 67 votes including 17 republicans who are bought into this process and who seem to want to get to an outcome here. it could happen as early as this weekend if senator chuck schumer sticks to his threat of making senators work late into the night and through the weekend to finish this up. once it passes the senate, that's when things get very tricky because this bill is not in as good shape in the house of representatives. many democrats there are skeptical, and moderates are pressuring house democratic leaders to put this on t

anna palmer and shannon pettypiece, thanks for starting us off this hour with a lot of developments. >>> joining us now is washington democratic congress woman pramila jayapal. it looks like the senate may be on the verge of a final agreement on the infrastructure bill. it's what all the indicators suggest at this hour. what do you make of what you are hearing about this deal, and are you hopeful that congress will be able to pass this soon? >> well, ayman, of course, we're looking forward to seeing the details. we have not seen any details so until we do, it's going to be difficult to say what we think about the deal, but it's an important step. i think that they seem to have come to some sort of an agreement. our focus has been on the reconciliation package. this is the package that contains health care for americans, that contains child care so that women can go back to work t.contains paid leave. it contains real efforts to take on climate change. i mean, these are the things that the american people have heard us promise and need us to deliver on because these are urgent crises

palmer, both msnbc contributors. jonathan, i'll begin with you, and the message coming out of white house, what was the white house's message to mayors and governors from both parties and beyond them? who are they trying to reach with this event? >> well, the meeting will start shortly, and i'll be part of the press pool that goes inside to catch the top of it and the president's remarks. this is part of their push, public relations push, to sell this deal, obviously this part is more focused on the hard infrastructure, bridges, roads, highways, broadband, public transit, things like that. we have this $3.5 trillion deal that was struck last night that is more of the cares act, the family part, if you will, of the biden infrastructure plan and it's going to be a message saying look, this will help your community. they know at least the white house is touting polls that show that the president's plans will broadly popular among both democrats and republicans alike in terms of citizens. far fewer republican lawmakers b
