the lawmaker behind the new executive order mayor of atlanta, keisha lance bottoms. mayor, thank you for being here. what exactly do you want to accomplish with this executive order? the law has already passed. >> well, thank you for having me. and what we want to accomplish is the 1.2 million customers in the metro atlanta area, what this new law means. how they can get the appropriate i.d., the new rules related to absentee ballots. we want our customers to be informed. so ambassador young tells a great story. one day of voting when he first ran for congress and 74% turnout in the african-american community. so even though there may be barriers, we can still overcome those barriers and we want to make sure our customers are informed so they need to know what to do to cast their ballot when the time comes. >> we have heard a lot about no food or water in line, but beyond those headlines what is the most dangerous part of this bill? >> the most dangerous part of this bill, in my opinion, is the dialing back or giving to the state legislature control over the election

mayor keisha lance bottoms. but folks, we are not only having to invest in america, we have to invest in our families. we need to invest in things our families care about and need the most. that is why the american family plan does four things. and we have paid for it all. one, without raising the deficit -- it adds four years more guaranteed public education in america. if we were building education today like we did in the last century, did anybody-- did anybd say 12 years is enough to compete and win the competition in the 21st-century? i don't think so. the rest of the world has caught up to us now. my plan provides a universal preschool for every three-year-old and four-year-old in america. that's a game changer. it also provides two years of free community college. that's a game changer as well. jill is a community college professor, still teaching. she constantly says, joe, community colleges can change the lives of students. any country that out-educates us is going to out-compete us. she will be leaving

so talk to me about the thing that mayor keisha lance bottoms is trying to do. is this meaningful? is it the beginning of a movement other cities will pick up on or is it a band-aid? >> it's meaningful. everything you can do is going to be helpful. my bigger concern -- and there's so much that's offensive in this language. it's all built on trump's big lie. he's out there saying he we shalled this had been in place before the election so he could have been able to accomplish stealing the election. my biggest concern though, as odious as it is to make it harder to vote, this opens the door to the georgia legislature if they don't like the outcome of an election to overrule state election officials. if this law had been in place prayer to last november, i think there's a real question whether joe biden would have carried the state he legitimately won and whether there would have been a runoff. this isn't just about georgia. this is now going to be the standard that republican elected officials think they have to note in other states. and so this is an existential moment. there are so

you have atlanta mayor keisha lance bottoms signing an order. i mean, that might blunt the impact, i suppose, but how do you make sure that voters are able, equipped to combat these efforts? >> you know, i think that we do need to have education as part of it, which is why our organization and many other organizations on the ground are doing voter education work. we've been engaged. some of the mobilizization didn't just up and happen. that came after people working on the ground, working with communities, working with groups, educating them about the opportunity to vote, educating them about the significance of voting and the impact of their votes. and so they responded to that. the other way is there a we have to safeguard people's right to vote, that we cannot allow legislation that is punitive that, punishes people for participating in the process. that's essentially what is happening. so georgia voters are now under attack, particularly black voters are under attack because they came out in record numbers this last election cycle. and so wh

lance bottom, she says boycotts will hit the metro atlanta area the hardest and have a ripple across the state. small businesses and everyday working people will suffer. it is the not too late to right the sinking ship. she wants the law changed, but she also as you point out was concerned about the effect on her constituents. >> well, it's not going to affect these ceos and their lifestyle one iota. not at all. but it will affect parking lot attendants and selling hot dogs and sodas up in the stands, it'll affect the people who are taking the tickets and the ushers. it'll affect a whole lot of working class people who have been hit in the teeth by a yearlong lockdown, and now they're getting kick in the teeth again by board members and ceos who will never see the effect of just crushing hard working, decent, honest people in atlanta. eric: that's the local situation. you mentioned china. the mlb just signed a whole new contract to stream the games in china as well as throughout the asian area. they're trying to grow in china, and they have games in cuba, an exhibition game a few yea

. >> atlanta's mayor keisha lance bottoms has spoken out against the boycott. the issue of the all-star game is being raised to the fore. are you being persuaded by any of those local voices or do you think this still needs to go forward, the boycott, in your eyes? >> well, as far as faith leaders concerned, our focus is on corporate responsibility and boycotting these corporate companies. as relates to the all-star game and entertainment, all of that, those who want to pursue that, that's fine. that's on their side. we're focusing on the corporate boycott. >> sure. >> well, look, what you're asking for is to help reverse a law that's been passed. and georgia's passed their law but you know this is something that's going on nationwide right now. and to get these legislators, you're going to have to find a way to reach across the aisle. i want to show you statistics from a new pew poll that came out earlier this month. it speaks to the division you have to deal with. 85% of democrats say everything possible should be done to make it easier to vote. but just 28%
