capitol. the suspect jumped out of his vehicle with a knife and was shot by police. just moments ago, u.s. capitol police confirmed the suspect died at the hospital and the chief made another somber announcement. one officer has died. this incident comes, of course, about three months, just shy of three months after the january 6th riot in which hundreds of people forced their way into the capitol to try to stop congress from counting the electoral college ballots and affirming joe biden's election. what happened today, we don't have any motive. joining us now, tom winter, nbc news investigations correspondent and nbc news correspondent leigh ann caldwell is on capitol hill for us. tom, i think the acting police chief said it so poignantly today when she said this has been an extremely difficult time for capitol police. what do we know? what are you learning about what happened here? >> well, chris, perfectly said. good afternoon. i think the issue here for law enforcement at this moment is co

capitol complex. assessments are underway to examine the failures of january 6. as those assessments are conducted, it is critical we examine all aspects of campus security, both physical security and the decision-making processes that ensure capitol pawleys avenue -- capitol police have the resources they need. we must make holistic funding decisions to mixer we correct the problems and invest to address threats of the future, often the hardest thing to do. however, as we begin crafting fiscal year 2022 legislative branch bill, we must do so in light of the unprecedented fiscal situation in which we find ourselves. in the short time since i have been here, true challenge of covid, structural, trillion dollar deference that we contend with every year that are soon to become one point $5 trillion, have to be kept in perspective. unsustainable debt levels, interest payments and spending habits have negative effects across the entire government. they crowd out critical investments and priority areas for

capitol. >> just -- if you can elaborate more on that. because we know recently a lot of the barriers went down. and, you know, this capitol, your office, has apparently a massive target on its back. what -- what does that feel like as a member of congress? >> well, you know, for a few weeks, coming to congress literally was like going into a war zone. you had barbed wire fence all over. troops all over. i used to tell folks if i have such a difficult time as a member of congress getting in what hope is there for the public to get? and i really felt and i hoped that was temporary and that we could start getting back to normalcy. what often has happened is when there is a recess, because members are not here in the same numbers, i think there is less security, less folks, different members go back to different districts at different times. and unfortunately, you know, there was a breach. and there is a sense that now going -- simply going to work is something that has become dangerous. and i ca

capitol. before that, in 1998, we had two capitol police officers shot and killed on the capitol grounds there. there's many incidents there. i drive by that place just about every day going to my law office. i can tell you that up until about a week ago and also barricades, also fences. they took them down. now we have check points. this is what i want people to understand. this happened as one of the major checkpoints that the senate and congressmen go through. it's at that point where they also have an in-ground barricade. the in-ground barricade is up. so just before you get to the in-ground barricade, you come in contact with capitol hill police officers that will check your i.d. and your credentials and be on this property, they'll let you through. on this instance here, it appears as though that they may have checked this guy out, person out. at that stage he tried to run past them, hit the barricade and got out with a knife. they wound up having to shoot him. >> all right. that's an in

that would be the lower part of capitol hill as you approach the capitol from downtown. independence avenue, what we are told is that a car was trying to get through a checkpoint and didn't stop and just kept going. that much seems pretty clear. what we are trying to confirm is reports the officers on the scene fired at the car. we have been told by a couple of law enforcement agencies that shots were fired. our understanding is that the officers on the scene fired at the car. that's as much as we know at this point. whether the car was stopped, who the driver was, whether the driver shot at the officers, all questions to be answered. this just happened within the last maybe 20 minutes or so. we are getting sketchy information at this point. the capitol police were there on the scene. federal law enforcement is responding as well. we are still waiting for a better word on exactly what happened. as far as we know, no officers were hit by gunfire. i just don't know for sure whether -- what the situation is. a car tried to run a barricade. >> i don't mean to check your tens
