how bad are we looking bay area wide right now? >> that depends where you are but the entire bay area is classified as being in drought conditions. we got the newest update from the u.s. that monitor today. the only major change from the update last week is that the santa cruz mountains and now instead of being classified as abnormally dry are also in moderate drought conditions. that is for the southern half and along the coast and you get into this transitions that just zone. and then extreme drought the farther north you go. there is another category called exceptional drought, fortunately we don't have that on the map at this point but as we head into the driest time of year that certainly is possible that we are going to reach that threshold and we have been in drought conditions across the bay area for more than a year. this is a map from climate central with whom we partner to show you the impact of climate change both around the bay area and across the country and look how much of the western u.s. the red shaded areas inclu

before anyone forgets last year's bay area fire season. at one point the bay was quite literally surrounded by fire. statewide over 4 million acres of land burned and in santa clara county alone a record 400,000 acres burned. now experts trying to predict what happens next. right now experts sample the moisture in plants and it is not looking good. in fact, they call it grim. >> this is a standard test that is done across the state by a number of different agencies and gives us an idea of the moisture content and that relates to how hot the fires will burn, how easy they're going to burn and spread. >> reporter: moisture in plants is usually at the highest in april but because there's been so little rain over the winter plants are not growing. >> the fact they're not reaching what they typically reach in april which is the highest moisture content when they start to bloom and growing is indicative of something that could be drastic this summer. >> reporter: the good news is the raburn may pick up by may but cal fire is not taking any chanc

, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> we certainly hope so. so how will the pause on johnson & johnson shots impact the vaccine supply across california? we're going to show you a graph that shows the number of doses california has to distribute this week. we're talking 2 million doses right here, right. so that includes pfizer, moderna and johnson & johnson. had 2 million, and now johnson & johnson has been taken off the table, so what's left? not bad at all. 1.9 million. this represents how many are left. so that's not bad at all. you can see johnson & johnson made up a very small percentage of the state's doses. it is a similar story for next week. we're talking about johnson & johnson being off the table next week. so the state will have 1.9 million doses, that's what the total was with all the vaccines it expected. but if you take the johnson & johnson out, then it has 1.8 million shots. so, again, really not a big player in this. a small piece of the state's supply. >> well, there is no doubt today's decision to pause all j&j vaccination

specifically across the bay area. health leaders say some counties could prevent california from reaching herd immunity. let's start with marin really leading the way. vaccination rates in the state 80% now in marin county of adults with at least one dose. over here 55% fully vaccinated. that's marin county. santa clara county doing well also right here with these numbers. 61% with at least one dose. the bay area doing better than the state as a whole. look at california's number here, 54% of adults have gotten at least a shot. but some counties are far behind. sutter county sacramento only 31% of adults with one shot. yuba county, 23% of adults. we need somewhere between 70% and 90% of the state to have the coronavirus antibodies to reach that herd immunity. >>> contra costa county is pushing to get more shots into arms. firefighters from the san ramon fire protection district administered the vaccine. appointments were required, and those who got their first shot were given follow-up appointments to get their second
