but she does not have to be an naacp plant. she was inclined to do which he did on the bus that day. it didn't have to be preplanned. she was inclined because of her activist self to do that. then you had the supreme court ruling, that ends the bus boycott. and i want to point out all these other women. just to make sure that you see. but i will and hear. you have the mystic rosa parks. and yet other thing that we're going to continue next time, and through several other classes, i would argue that that is at the center of this problematic civil rights movement. >> just going back to the original question, i think one point what can't be overlooked, is not talk about the organization, and just showing how one would say it's inspirational, when you're talking to these young black kids who are in the school, i think the part of our education system is pushing forth this civic agenda. so the young blacks that are in class, and it's like well if we organized, where we find solidarity solidarity in each other amongst each other. or

people start to join the naacp for one in places like new york and new jersey and california, naacp membership skyrockets. in 1940 the naacp had about 50000 members. by 1946 naacp has about 500,000 members written so that is one of the way black workers begin to get involved. many of them joined civil rights organizations like the naacp. they also begin to vote. they are very active politically. they are putting pressure on different people in places like detroit, and new york, and california are black people can vote they are putting pressure and city leaders to desegregate, to do something about the south. know what happens in the south comes a low bit slower, but he start to see some real results coming out of the north. one, truman desegregated the military 1948. okay question if that's one of the things that happened as a result of the pressure by a philip randolph but also black voters, black workers who are paying attention "after words". there's all sorts of different levels of desegregation in american life begins occur in the 1950s jackie robinson 1947, no coincidence that happened r

but she had been, she worked in the naacp and had worked in variousother organizations . and so her place i think is worthy of movement activists themselves. they go very well to a crucial figure of the older generation and she was one that generation. guide and nurture the younger generation coming in in the 50s and 60s. most of the other people may have gotten less attention. we tend to forget the people who are doing voter education and registration back in the 1940s. who are still active. in the 1960s and they drew on those experiences. and these were important. stephanie clark for example. an important figure in the movement. so i think that's you know, a counter argument. it had some beneficial views. my point though again, back to my book, people who are on some don't make the history book but when you look at who got arrested, in birmingham. got arrested in montgomery. who brought the case in the montgomery supreme court and one victories. over segregation in montgomery. it was about four or five women, who brought suit. and all had been with us similar experience

what charles hamilton houston did is, he convinced the naacp to hire thurgood as his assistant. he did a lot of traveling and wanted somebody in the office, so thurgood grabbed the job. it paid $200 a month. he moved to new york, got a place in harlem, he and his wife , and dug into this work, which really was his life's passion. he worked as an assistant for the next three years, 1938, 1939. charles hamilton houston's health was never good, so he decides to resign his position with the naacp and go back to teaching at howard. and he convinced them to have thurgood be his replacement. at that time, the irs was getting on the naacp about fundraising because they did lobbying and also did legal work. so they created a separate legal arm, the legal education and defense fund inc.. the lawyers called it the inc fund, and thurgood was named the head. he was running his own civil rights law firm, a public interest law firm. granted, it only had three lawyers and a couple of assistants, then they would go to six lawyers, but they carried on this fight, this consistent, step-by-step cam

let's talk about this and more with the president of the naacp, derek johnson. thank you for joining us. this bill in georgia would limit, as i said, early voting, drop boxes, require voter i.d. for absentee ballots. republicans are following apparently the same playbook in other states as well. what does this tell you about the gop strategy to try to regain power? >> well, unfortunately, they are unwilling to expand their platform, their agenda to attract more voters in. they would prefer to restrict access to voting. feels like we're living in 1950 as opposed to 2021. we must, as a nation, ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot free of interruption, free of suppression and free of laws that seek to subvert and suppress our democracy. >> you can't make it harder to vote. people need to go out there and vote. president trump used the stage yesterday to say in his words republicans should be the party of honest elections. how concerning, derrick, is it to see republicans, including the former president, use the big lie to make it harder for american c

and that follows a lawsuit by congressman betty thompson and the naacp for that matter. do democrats have a better chance of holding trump accountable in the courts than through any congressional efforts? >> well, you know i really think that we should try all avenues. and i'm not surprised that there's a suit from eric swalwell. i wouldn't even be surprised if you see suits in the near future from the staff because people were just deeply affected. and i know one of the differences in his suit is he includes other members of the trump family and giuliani. but the suit that representative thompson has brought i know i look forward to learning more about it and joining in that lawsuit. >> yeah, i had derek johnson, the head of the naacp on the show the other day, and he's part of that lawsuit as well. democratic congresswoman zolof published a report today detailing how republicans may have expressed public support for the insurrection, this as federal investigators are looking into data showing communication between rioters and various lawmakers around the capitol siege.

now the naacp for san jose and silicon valley has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city of san jose. 4 alleged police violence during protests. they claim the demonstrators and observers were brutalized by police in late may of last year. there were demonstrations in response to the death of george floyd, a man who was shot in the face during one incident says that he's adjusting to life with one eye. the group wants the police department to be barred from using things like tear gas and batons even during riots. >> barry, a rideshare companies, uber and lyft have teamed up to create a database listing drivers who have been ousted by the company's for accusations of assault and other various crimes. the new safeguard will be overseen by an independent background check company. this follows through on a promise made by uber more than a year ago when it revealed that more than 3,000 assaults have been reported on its service. since 2018 during that time, uber and lyft have been working to navigate through antitrust and privacy concerns to create a way to flag drivers who have enga

the irony in a supreme court in a case called alabama versus the naacp said such groups, 501 c 4 groups did not have to disclose their donors in 1954 when the racist attorney generals were trying to see who was giving money to the naacp. it's ironic that we come to that plate. finally, federal takeover of elections. outlaws voter i.d. you'll have to have an i.d. to cash a check, get on an airplane. if you want to vote, you can't have it. it restores voting rights for felons, automatic voter registration at 16. expands mail-in and early voting whether your state wants to do it or not and legalizes ballot harvesting, which is illegal in many states. that's where somebody can get a ballot for you around turn it in for you, which has been misused in state after state. we had a terrible scandal where people were harvesting ballots for people that were disabled. finally, limits names of dead or those moved from registration. that's the start of bad things in the bill. >> it's so bad, took three white boards to describe it all. >> to start the description. >> lawrence: that's right. how is thi

naacp taking them to court. activists calling for new boycotts on georgia companies that are acquiesing this airlines. the ceo praising some parts of that new bill. your view on whether donald trump really has a criminal legal problem in georgia and what does it mean when he we hear reports of two grand juries? >> he is looking at criminal exposure. these grand juries are significant. that's a very serious prosecutorial step. it looks like, according to the news reports they are on the verge of using their inquisitive powers to subpoena. one question i have is why are there two grand juries investigating this? what is the break down between them? i think there's a lot of unanswered questions. if you're donald trump right now, it's not looking good. >> you're saying it's a little bit legally unusual. you're wondering why. we were wondering why. that's why we asked you. sometimes the answers aren't immediately available until we learn more of what's a pretty secretive process. i want to read a little more from the

executive director of the wayfinder foundation and former president of the minneapolis chapter of the naacp. welcome back to democracy now! i know you have been in the streets and you are an attorney. could you start off by talking out why the trial was delayed? >> the trial was delayed because the attorney general's office. desk sought to reinstate the third-degree murder church against derek chauvin. the defense attorney filed an appeal to the court of appeals decision that said prosecutors could in fact add the charge back in the complaint against derek chauvin. defense attorneys are pushing for that change to occur in the opposite direction, so now the judge is waiting to hear what the appeals court was going to say. juan: could you talk about the jury selection process, concerns that may exist in the community about the previous maup of juries in hennepin county? >> yes. a big part of the concern is whether or not there will be any real diversity on the jury. of course, we have complicating factors such as covid-19 in terms of the impacts on the black community and other communities of

. >>> joining me me now is janai nelson and associate director for the naacp defense fund. first of all, the importance of a third degree murder count issue, how big of a deal is this for the prosecution to try to rescue it? >> it's quite significant. we want to make sure in a case this serious every possible charge is being levied and offered for the jury to consider, considering the facts of this case that are so incredibly egregious. the jury deserves to consider every possible avenue for third degree conviction and the third degree murder charge allows for yet another opportunity to hold derek chauvin accountable if they believe the prosecution met its burden. and that's critically important. we don't want to see justice denies because of the incorrect charges were brought or because not sufficient charges were brought. so it's very important to get it right and to take the time to get it right. there's so much riding on this particular trial in terms of the integrity of it, in terms of the quality of the prosecution, and i think that it is important that everyone feel
