the health care system of massachusetts is the envy of the world. over -- undercooked, they have to continue to get this battle everything that happened. fire, ems, law enforcement, our first responders and the national guard who come whatever they're called, and working with this illness. caregivers, many of whom who have never taken a day off provide 24-seven attention to children in need and vulnerable populations. the salvation army, red cross, ymca, food banks, pantries, and hundreds of charitable organizations pivoted on a time to meet shelter and other needs. the individual efforts, the ones we don't hear a lot about, carry just as big of an impact. neighbors donated things in money after a woman went to church after she had nowhere to go. she completed her 10 year journey from custodian to our in -- 2 -- two needy families only to be followed by what would normally use competition who did not say think. what if photographers volunteered to put together a wedding foreign army sergeant after their plans were upended covid. my wife and several

in 1630, john winthrop whose portrait you see on the left, came to massachusetts to new england in the first wave of what has been called the great migration. this sort of wave of puritan settlement, the 1620 pilgrim episode was a much smaller blip, but under john winthrop puritans have a large mass migration to new england, beginning to spread out throughout the land, and winthrop also is famous for in 1630 coming over to massachusetts and talking about america being -- their settlement in america being as a city upon the hill for the world to marvel at, which is -- that rhetoric of a city on a hill is sort of bit of american mythology that has perpetuated and persisted, often referenced by u.s. presidents. ronald reagan was fond of it, for example, well into the present day. and yet, we learn about john winthrop and the puritans in 1630. we don't learn as much about the man who was born around 1630 who is to his right, which is popay, just like we spend a lot more time in massachusetts than we spend in the american southwest. so popay, though, like winthrop and the puritans wanted to

new york, pennsylvania, massachusetts. these were exclusively irish. the idea is they would showcase irish contributions to the war effort and to the larger community. that's really why the irish press seemed to be behind the support for the north. by fighting for the north, by putting on the uniform and shedding blood, they laid a real claim to true citizenship, something that nativist sentiment had suggested was not possible for the irish. there is also some other reasons for supporting the north that were tied to great brráain. some irish editors, writers for newspapers, believe that if the confederacy was successful in breaking away from the union that that would benefit grqpá britain on the international scale. that was not something they wanted to see. and kind of the romantic reason that we are seeing in the irish press, sometimes this turns up and soldiers letters as well, is the idea that military experience among irish shoulders could be used later to free ireland in a military campaign against gambling. for a number of reasons, for people

he had two sons, lewis and charles who enlisted and who trained in massachusetts. douglas would make several trips there to watch his sons march and train with the other troops. and he continued to emphasize that this was the black man's hour. he said, in fact, rather i think well chosen parallel he said the white man's soil was tried in 1776 and the black man's soul was tried in 1863. and he devoted many words, many column to answering questions such as why should a colored man enlist? and often he retreated to themes that centered on manhood and also on claims of citizenship. and the belief in assimilation. and he argued and i'm quoting here, he who fights the battle of america may claim america as his country and have that claim respected. thus in defending your country now against rebels and traitors, you're defending your own liberty and honor and your manhood and your self-respect, unquote. so, he would continue with these themes along with using apocalyptic rhetoric and continue this drum beat through august of 1863 when he concluded douglass' monthly. he pe

massachusetts led the way. governor andrew was committed to this cause. douglass commented as early as 1863 on the need to support massachusetts throughout the north by bringing black men to the military cause. he pointed out, and this goes back to some of the points made by craig lauren, douglass noted that there was a mona craddick -- an element, people insufficiently supported of the emancipation of the union. the growing disposition to -- he proclaimed his support by -- that would fund the enlistment of 150,000 black troops. while douglass began to work in earnest while the 54th was being recruited and trained, and probably him most -- his most famous declaration was the one i used for my paper, and this is the broad side and front page editorial that appeared in douglass' monthly. douglass laid out the issues and themes that revolved around the opportunity for black men to fight for the union. it included his claims of citizenship, of the quest to patriotism, and he had also believed that military service which would help to end slavery and end the w

in 1623, the pilgrims launched a three strike against native massachusetts bay. treacherously murdering several and bringing the head of one enemy that the plymouth. as far as we know, with this early date, the pilgrims did not consider taking natives captive and enslaving them. i don't think the films would have wanted any substantial number of natives living and working in the settlement were near it. they prefer to keep all but a few trusted natives at a safe distance. the enslavement of captains was well-established biblical and legal principle. he was taken in battle, should remained bond forever. his principal was generally non- applied in intra- european wars. english settlers put into practice beginning with the 1630s. a few of them and the infamous colony. 1648, former mayflower passengers winslow, a native boy to a ship captain. he was likely held captive. he worked alongside a number of english servants, and extensive escape in marshville. he specified a ten year period servants but it's fair to say in their disposal to the caribbean, treated him like
