capitol. two buildings have been evacuated for staffers we're still awaiting news on exactly why those were evacuated and what the facts around that situation are. but certainly there is a very heavy police and security presence on capitol hill on a very big day and quite a bit of commotion downtown >> one observation and one question, the observation is, i listened to senator mcconnell's speech i have never, ever heard him rebuke the president in such strong, very, very strong terms. the observation is, there looks like a very unruhly scene outside the capitol right now. what more can you tell us about these demonstrations and whether the security in and around the capitol, the rings there, are strong enough to hold back what look like thousands of protesters >> reporter: certainly the mayor of d.c. had been beefing up the security presence because of the rally that was being held and the speech given by president trump. from what we've seen on twitter and on social media, posts about some of

capitol that's near the u.s. supreme court building the steps on this side where a lot of the clashes were taking place these steps at least on this side of the capitol is fairly at this hour most of the protesters have been cleared out of there but there are other side to the capitol where they have not been cleared out yet the capitol as well knows a very big huge building that takes up several city blocks so i can tell you from what we're seeing from our perspective here there were some very tense moments as i mentioned there were about 15 to 20 journalists that were reporting inside a pin which is a metal gate that is often used where they were journalists gather to report with video equipment and our satellite equipment and everything was fine and then it was as as tear gas was being fired some of the protesters turned on the journalists and came over to the pin started yelling at us. we were just outside to get the journalists who were inside and outside the pen and then kicked down the barrier and then sta

capitol. lawmakers evacuating from the house floor. guns were drawn. with me now, edward lawrence. he is inside the capitol hill building. he is at the russell rotunda. edward, what is happening right now? reporter: right now there is multiple reports that the woman who was shot now passed away. she has died. she was shot outside the house chamber. we don't know who shot her or why she was shot. one person possibly according to reports that we're seeing has passed away. there was also tear gas used inside of the capitol to get some of these protesters away. as protesters marched on to d.c., on to the capitol grounds, they came from the mall area, down pennsylvania avenue, unconstitution to the capitol mall area. what happened police were simply overwhelmed. there will be an investigation how folks got in, they seemed overwhelmed when the mob of people came. the doors opened, thousands of people poured into the u.s. capitol. at one point there was a protesting standing at the senate pro tem sea

capitol and the capitol grounds immediately. you know, they try to have these debates above the frey. once you have the frey getting in the building, you can protest outside, you can call your members' office but you can write letters and e-mails and things. what has happened here is you have had a breach here. the idea that someone was shot inside the capitol, we've had those types of instances before. there were puerto rican nationals that shot up the house chamber in 1954, wounding a couple members. members diving under the desks. there's still a bullet hole in the upper gallery, the press gallery in the public viewing gallery where some of the pictures were from earlier. that still existed from the shootout in the house chamber. remarkable images of people being brought down the house steps. we haven't seep anything like that since 1954. you had two officers shot and killed. you had a crazed man that tried to come in, what is called the memorial door now and killed two capitol polices and one on the detail to the then senate

capitol today. you can imagine that they will use that and the video and their forces on the house and senate floor in defiance of the capitol police as part of a recruiting effort to expand their ranks in the days and weeks to come and i think there are many alarming aspects of this, that's one. another one is this tweet we just have seen from a republican national committee spokesman who says earlier today a suspicious device was found at rnc headquarters rnc staff was safely evacuated from the building and the device has been successfully detonated by a bomb squad. that matches the reporting we've seen of potential improvised explosive devices in the capitol itself those are potential terrorist acts by people who, if those are live bombs, could be intending harm to the practitioners of american democracy, the political parties, the members of congress. this is a very dangerous and horrific moment for american democracy, shep, as you were pointing out what we watched with the president-elect is a

capitol but outside the capitol grounds. capitol police describe these explosives as capable of causing great harm. a federal law enforcement source told abc news that the suspected pipe bombs were not hoax devices or imitation devices. they were real bombs. one was found outside the national headquarters of the republican party, the other outside the democratic party national headquarters. both of those buildings were evacuated yesterday after the bombs were discovered. the fbi said its bomb technicians blasted these devices apart with water cannons to make them safe. the investigators are now examining the pieces of the blown-apart bombs for evidence. but again, as far as we know, no arrests or suspects in conjunction with the planting of those explosive devices. if there are people involved in yesterday's attacks who are willing and able to build and plant operable pipe bombs on political targets, those are people who obviously need to be found as quickly as possible. watch this space, i guess. watch this space, i guess.

and they passed it on to the capitol police. in the case of the fbi they actually went and visited some extremists that they had on their radar, under investigation, and dissuaded some of them from traveling to washington. so their view is that it might have been even worse. but the thing about this revelation is that it really raises the question, first of all what the head of the field office told pete williams on friday when he said we had no information that there was anything but peaceful protests planned. we have known flatly that's not the case because we have all seen on social media there was lots of indications. but it wasn't just the fbi that said that. the pentagon said that, the department of homeland security. there is a real disconnect here and we don't have all the information whether there was an intelligence failure. if the fbi had the information and passed it on why weren't more forces backing up the capitol police? i mean it is obvious the capitol police failed. they were not manned enough to stop the mob fr
