i don't live in new york. i love new york. i've been visiting and been in it quite often in my years with cnn. this makes me think twice about whether i want to be in the city and certainly whether i want to bring my family there. joey who i have a lot of respect for and trust his legal opinion, i am not a lawyer, but he mentioned do we want to prosecute people waving guns, well one of the provisions of this is they are downgrading armed robberies if you don't hurt somebody. so you will have people waving guns who don't get prosecuted to the extent i'm sure the person being robbed or the store owner would like to see. i think this is a big political issue by the way, don, a continuation of liberal democrats' war on police. i think you'll see republicans use it, conservatives talk about this, and i think you'll see the mayor of new york city who by the way i have a lot of respect for because he is already standing up to the shutdown mafia and the teachers unions, will he stand up for the police he previously served with? this i

so i think things are in motion in new york and i just would like to see the change in new york and many other cities in the u.s. >> just wondering if there's any one particular strategy or tactic that you have seen that has worked particularly well to bring police together with community. is it really on some level just a matter of knowing this is who i can call, this is who i have spoken with? >> those relationships are really important. in many police departments you will have a community liaison, an officer that knows the sid citizens in a specific area where the citizens know if i have a problem i can pick up that phone and call officer whoever. so that is one of the things that really must be focused on if this division is to be fixed. also things like officers just walking in the community, walking on foot, talking to the kids, talking to the store owners, it all can be changed, it all can work, but you have to see the effort from the police department. >> anthony barksdale, always grateful to have your perspective. it is valuable to us. thank you so much. >> thank you, christi. >

cnn's athena jones is in new york. this is day three for the new new york city mayor eric adams. his message seems to be pretty clear. >> hi, jake. it is clear. exactly what you just said. school is the safest place for children. he's been pointing out the many draw backs of not having schools open. for instance, children being exposed for criminal environment. children who have trouble with remote learning which leaves behind a lot of kids, especially those in poorer communities, housing insecure. also the challenges parents face when they don't have child care and schools for meals. but this is also part of a larger idea we're hearing from him which is learning to live with covid while we modify our behavior. listen to some of what he thathad to say during a visit to a school in the bronx this morning. >> when a mayor has swagger, the city has swagger. we have allowed people to beat us down so much that all we did was wallow in covid. that's all we did. and we no longer believe. this is a city of swagger. this is a city of resiliency. and all of these messages out there of what

it is not likely to school smoother as new york and l.a. to vaccine mandates for students in the fall. but a lot of the resistance breaks down simple logic. senator ted cruz tweets that covid mandates are wrong. schools have no right to get your 5-year-old vaccinated. he is for getting about mandates that have long existed for measles, mumps, polio and chickenpox. of course we politicized this pandemic to our detriment as a nation. and teachers unions are not immune. the same standards have got to apply if we're going to return our nation to something like sanity. so here's the deal. follow the data. get your kids vaccinated. and keep our schools open. and that's your "reality check." >> all right. john avlon, thank you so much for that. >>> all right. joining me now is director of policy lab at the children's hospital of philadelphia, which has issued a new set of guidelines on how to safely keep schools open. dr. ruben, the implication here, and i know you believe this, is basically schools, you think, should stay open. why is it importan
