mcdonald's shares gaining about 25% in 2021. futures in the green this morning as we began the first full trading week of 2022. the dow, nasdaq and s&p finishing up more than 18% in 2021. the biggest winner there of the three, look at the s&p 500, gaining 27%. we get the employment numbers, the big spotlight this week, the december jobs report due out on friday. joining me now is pro chain capital president david cowell, also mahoney asset management ceo ken mahoney and lee carter. happy new year, welcome, one and all. david, to you first this morning. what are you watching for this week to keep these markets moving to the plus side? >> well, probably mostly watching political developments, frankly. you know, there'll be, i think, decent sentiment in the markets. first week not necessarily indicative of the whole year, but there is a lot going on on the political front certainly with respect to russia, and we want to see how that goes relative to other macro issues certainly relating to oil and gas and also with respect to curre

companies like mcdonald's have been pore front of this type of technology -- forefront of this type of technology, entering kiosks well before everybody else, and now it's affordable for everybody. and really the whole idea of, you know, a kiosk at $2500 versus $10,000, people are afraid that they were spending -- mcdonald's spent a billion dollars on kiosk technology, and now you're looking at this being democratized at $200 a month. dagen: jon hilsenrath, get in. >> i want to ask you one question about the great resignation that you're talking about. to what extent are you seeing this happening with older americans? i mean, we've known for decades that there was a baby boomer population that was coming on, that was moving towards retirement. my sense is that during the pandemic what happened is a lot of those baby boomers went and did it and accelerated that whole process. so are you seeing these retirements more at the older end of the chain, and are there just not enough young people coming up, coming behind them to backfill them? >> really what, you know, what i've seen and what i

former mcdonald's usa ceo ed ren sy joins us now and ed, i've got another figure to throw out there and it's not a good one. the number of unfilled jobs according to the website "indeed " the career website, has gone from 11 million to 12 million. 12 million unfilled jobs now, and that is just killing small businesses. when is it going to start going in the right direction? >> i have no idea if this continues the way it is, it's going to be nothing but a greater and greater catastrophe. one of the things i think we're overlooking a little bit is that the baby boomers were born from 1946 to 64. the oldest is 76 and the youngest is 58, but the first child of the baby boomers is starting to reach 56 years of age, so the retirement numbers are going to start to accelerate and it's going to be a lot of upward mobility because they're leaving the workforce which is going to leave a shortage at the bottom end and boy we're feeling it big time in restaurants, barber shops, daycare centers, it's a nightmare and the other problem we got, the pandemic, this new strain of virus, is causing people t

welcome back to my colleague and friend elizabeth mcdonald who joins us now. the cdc said do you think we are looking to the other side of peak covid, looking at the other side and that is up another side. liz: i look peak geek, i look at the studies. don't look at what a lot of people say on television or in print. i like to read studies. we see that in europe, hong kong, talk about peak covid. danish authorities saying we could be back to normal in two months. danish authorities, omicron is so contagious but doesn't go into the lungs issue and therefore hong kong and south africa studies are showing, immunity against other variants like the delta variant. we are seeing the who saying omicron could reach an endemic level. seeing positivity out of these studies, it could create immunity, not so much heard immunity but natural antibody immunity, that is what they are talking about, the 1918 flu pandemic lit on fire through 1918 but in spring of 1919 it went endemic and the numbers started to go down, started to slide down. 675,000 people died in those two years

market reaction to get out of the way, stop and take a pause, then there was the bear trap report larry mcdonald yesterday, here is what he said about the federal reserve, watch this. >> the fed has really done a job here on the average investor because they have been selling us hard, hard, hard that inflation was transitory. so what happened was you had an incredibly bill-up as you just said in growth stocks and now the fed is coming clean admitting that inflation is much more sustainable on a higher trajectory and so they are out there trying to claim that they are going to do four hikes this year and at the end of the day the fed is promising on how they pull that and you have a big economic reaction. maria: isn't that the issue, peter. we do not know about this whole move from easing to tightening, would the fed get it right. the market has been underestimating how enormous this change will be, will they get it right and how would markets react? >> maria,s is such a difficult thing for a fed to do. for those who have been around for some time, you know, say since the 90's, we have seen vario
