public schools and the chicago teachers union is over. teachers will be back in class tuesday and students wednesday. the core was the teachers union didn't feel the school district provided adequate resources to come back in person safely. some of the major sticking points, one was the timing for returning in person given the research surge in covid we've seen in the community but also metrics on when to take the district virtual, versus what the city wanted to do was make the decisions on a school by school basis. listen to chicago mayor lori li lightfoot on what she saw got them across the finish line. >> we reached an agreement on the metrics for at a school-based level for when we needed to convert a classroom or school. not surprisingly the component parts of that depend upon staff and/or student absences. we test in every school every week now. but we've added some layers to enhance the testing. >> reporter: on those school based metrics the chief of staff said during the periods of high transmission it would take 40% of the studen

testing remains a big issue when it comes to chicago and new york city. the teachers unions in those cities are battling with their city mayors over how to keep kids in school and do it safely. let's take chicago, for instance, they had three consecutive days last week without having any school at all. the teachers union this weekend said they would be willing to come back for virtual teaching, meaning they would be in the classroom teaching while the students were at home remote learning. the mayor of chicago and the mayor of new york city says they only want to see in-person learning and here's why. >> science dictates one thing, the safest place for children is in a school building and what we want to do is not get in the way of preventing children from coming into that building. >> fundamentally what we cannot do is abandon the science. we know that the safest place for kids to be is in schools and we've spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make our schools safe. they are safe. we've got the data that demonstrate that. we've got to get the teacher

you look at the northeast corridor, particularly, for example, new york city and the upper midwest of chicago, it's peaked and turned around and the cases are coming down rather substantially. a little bit more of a lag in southern states and western states, but in general it looks very much like it's going in the right direction. you've got to hang in there and really prevent it from going back to a surge. the way we do that, anderson, is just to continue to follow the kinds of guidelines that we've been talking about for so long and i refer obviously to people who have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated. for those who have been vaccinated, if you are eligible to get boosted, please get boosted because the data are really strikingly clear that boosting brings back up your level of protection even against omicron to a very, very high level, particularly when you're talking about serious disease that might lead to hospitalization. so in general i'm cautiously optimistic that things are going in the right direction. we've seen that happen in south africa, in the u.k. and we're seeing it now
