guest: there was an announcement this morning from the white house that they are going to radically rethink about how they reward benefits related to classic exposure issues, some of the other war zones of the last 20 years. in the past, this has been a process where they get scientific studies, they take a long time, they connect things and award benefits based on some of those we're connections. but especially with burn pits, that has been a real problem. there were not air monitoring stations going in a lot of these bases overseas. we know it was toxic smoke, but all sorts of waste was being thrown in there. the smoke was going across bases, getting into troops' lung s and giving them respiratory illnesses and cancer. the biden administration says they will take a look at a range of respiratory illnesses, a range of cancers, and take a more generous look at whether or not they should be giving financial benefits to these veterans for injuries that they believe are connected. host: we are talking with leo shane about the veterans issues and the biden administration, how they are respondin

but if we believe with the white house has been telling us, th ey will make a decision. host: it is hard to read what the fed will do sometimes. any indication if he does pick brainard, how the fed would operate differently in terms of policy? guest: it is a real question about monetary policy. the general consensus among the democrats pushing for brainard is, you can have the interest rate and other monetary policy policies that you like from jay powell, she will continue those, but you can also get more aggressive with financial regulation. that is the argument from the democrats who support her. one of the arguments from liberals i talked to that support jay powell is she is a question mark, we do not know how fast she will raise interest rates. and she might have a different thought about things than chair powell does. the wildcard in this is inflation is currently running at a much higher pace than the fed thought it would, largely because of the delta variant, resurges that nobody in the federal world would have that would affect the economy as it has. that's a hea

is the white house -- a winter surge. is the white house shifting to, the virus is here to stay. heading into the holiday season were so many are traveling again, what can you tell people who are a little alarmed by these growing numbers? sec. psaki: first, we have encouraged people to look at some other numbers that are very encouraging, which is, last year we had 250 million adults who were unvaccinated, because vaccines were not approved yet. high risk of illness, hospitalization, and death from covid. people were not gathering last year. this year we have cut down that number to 50 million will remain unvaccinated, given 82% of adults have received at least one dose. we now have vaccines that are accessible. free, convenient. they're life-saving. we now have vaccines for kids as people think about gathering with their children or grandchildren, et cetera. so, things are certainly different than they were one year ago. boosters are readily available. we have upscaled testing and rapid tests. i would encourage people to look at the facts that now that vaccines are readily avail

i think it's quite dangerous to put everything in the white house for whatever president. there must be a law. presidents do push the envelope. president obama knew that he was pushing the envelope. if you channel everything into the white house, even deregulating nuclear power, there is a level of expertise that you want. i would be nervous about, i understand because of the unitary executive and the notion that the president alone has the executive power, the problem is the president is literally never alone. hate to tell you that, but he's got a massive entourage, even when he sleeps. at the president alone is operating for the nation and there are lots of internal rules about when he does things for the nation and when he does political stuff but that line is tenuous and i'm nervous about giving folks in the white house more power than they already have as opposed to agencies, i think it would aggravate political partisanship. >> i can't resist following up on the chairman's point, the idea, if we are going to have delegations, the idea of deregulatory delegations is i

it has been the house against the senate, congress against the white house. anytime you had that narrative, it can be embarrassing. it has been a particularly messy one because of the length of it. this week, the house -- nancy pelosi is wanting to bring this to the floor. there is no scheduled date, but the plan is to do it before they leave for the thanksgiving holiday. to do so, they had to get commitment from the moderates, who were holding out last week. moderate democrats said we need to see an official estimate from the budget office, which is typically a routine step on any piece of legislation that comes to the floor. in this case, they were ready to bypass that step. that is important. anyone provision might cost one thing. that is what they are waiting for from the ceo. moderates committed to voting on a bill this week. if they get additional information, they are giving that information. they seem to be on course to bring it to the floor. at the end of the day, what they want is to move beyond the process. biden's poll numbers are sinking. they wa
