we're following that breaking news from the white house. president biden addressing the nation this hour after a second meeting with his covid response team in just two days. highlighting the urgency the administration is feeling to learn everything they can about the concerning new coronavirus variant omicron with confirmed cases already at our northern aborter in ontario, canada. there are still a number of things we don't know about this variant with the white house releasing a statement sunday saying dr. fauci believes it will take up to two weeks to get answers on omicron's transmissibility, severity and other characteristics. the big question for nearly 200 million fully vaccinated americans, will their vaccine hold up against this new strain. fauci this morning urging eligible americans to not let fears over omicron's impact stop them from getting their booster shots. >> i would strongly suggest you get boosted now and not wait for the next iteration of it, which we might not even need, we're preparing -- the pharmaceutical companies

so the pieces are being put together by this committee to see to what extent the white house and the trump campaign had some sort of preplan to march supporters to the capital that day, it's a key component in getting to the bottom of what happened. >> what if he just plays this out the way he did, a tax fight the way that they did, the way that they did for a couple years, and then the midterms happen, and if the democrats close troll, lose subpoena power, they go away, and this whole thing could fizzle out. >> and no one is above the rule of law in this sound try. so the indictment is incredibly important because it shows you're not above the process including the president of the united states. he doesn't have executive privilege when he tries to overthrow the constitutionally elected government in this country and we have to figure out what happened to make sure it doesn't happy again. if we just go through the process, then it is okay to do these things, and it's not okay. we have an absolute responsibility and congress should move as fast as they can do get this thing done and

that's a pretty big job in any white house. in that position, he would oversee the vetting and hiring of everyone from ambassadors to cabinet members. not everyone thought it was a good idea. one staffer who oversaw the personal office told the president, i have never said no to anything you have asked me to do, but i'm asking you to reconsider this. i don't think it's a good idea. trump took that about as well as you can imagine. reportedly screamed at the staffer, you people never f-ing listen to me. going to f-ing do what i tell you to do. mcentee got the job and embarked on this ideological effort to purge the white house who are insufficiently loyal to donald trump. he hired new staffers, including liaisons. in one example, one of his enforcers noticed a low level staffer at the department of housing and urban development liked a post from the pop star taylor swift on instagram. specifically, this post where she encouraged her fans to vote in one photo and displayed photos decorated with the biden name. it was escalated to

this was right in the white house. this was the white house chief of staff. this was one of his campaign lawyers outlining a very specific plan with dates and times that was all centering on mike pence obeying the orders of donald trump, and it was a plan that if pence had gone along with, would have resulted in a much bigger constitutional crisis than what we saw. and joe, what i found is that's just one example of where this could have gone off the rails and almost did go off the rails even in a more spectacular way than it did. >> yep. well, just one example. jonathan, a shocking example. a guy who was a member of the united states congress goes over to work for the white house, and he's actively working to overthrow the united states government. to overthrow the elected president of the united states. it's absolutely staggering. in your reporting, how widespread was the contempt that donald trump staff members had for the united states constitution, for the peaceful transfer of power, for political and constitutional norms? >> and i'll add one other, for

the white house of representatives? >> i think you are right that democrats are on defensive, that's a new thing in virginia. you have to, i mean virginia has been getting bluer as as state, joe biden won it by ten points. that's a relatively recent phenomenon, you know, glenn youngkin came into this race with his -- the patterns of the days of jimmy carter is one party wins the white house one year and the following year the other party wins the virginia's governor race. the only time the pattern was broken in 2013 when a leader after barack obama was reelected president and some guy named terry mcauliffe was elected governor of virginia and then the pattern went back to the same as it always been. one party wins the white house and other party wins virginia's mansion. youngkin has history and momentum on his side. what mcauliffe has on his side is math. the fact that this has been a bluer and bluer state and so the question is, do enough democrats come out to vote for mcauliffe? does youngkin motivate republicans in a

look at the statements released from the white house by the rittenhouse verdict. it's difficult to say something meaningful and at the same time not set yourself up for fire from the other side. you know, i mean, it's really open to them. you asked about public safety earlier. let's stop and think here. i would have loved to hear more from her because i think she has a message to deliver that only a prosecutor who is a person of color could deliver. and then it's, folks, let's be reasonable about keeping each other safe. i think she can say, i respect the jury's verdict, but we have a long way to go. i have heard several statements from officials celebrating the loss of life. elected officials should never do that regardless of how they feel about the victim. >> kristen, kamala harris is a favorite of the right to beat up on. i think there are some that think maybe that enthusiasm on the right is what makes her more cautious. what makes her more of a magnet to attack than president biden? is it just race? >> i think -- take a look at the portfolio she's been hande

we saw him approach the white house, step in after 1:00 in the morning. he declined to comment when reporters shouted questions at that moment when mcauliffe had lost. this is something the white house feared would come. they knew the race would be close. they hoped that mcauliffe would have the organizational structure to pull out a victory. obviously, the enthusiasm at the end of the day came with youngkin. they're worried about what wake-up call might this send. will this be, as some hope, a warning to dems, you need to get your act together. get this done. you need to get this legislation done, passed, both pieces of it, not only to bolster the president, but also to give them something to run on for next year's midterms. conversely, some moderates are probably going, is this a signal the democrats went too big, too far? i got the text last night, i'm sure people on this set did, moderate dems saying, look, don't make biden fdr, lbj. he ran as a more moderate democrat, and he's gone too big, trying to expand too much. the $1.75 trillion social service

. >> what i hear from the white house, white house officials, as well as the president himself, is this sense of urgency. this sense of trying to tell americans, we hear your struggles. we see the gas prices and rising prices at the grocery store, and we want to help. yesterday, the president spoke at length about the release of oil, part of the strategic petroleum reserve. he did, though -- he wasn't able to give a date on sort of when people will start to see relief from that. the energy secretary, she told reporters yesterday that hopefully within a couple weeks, people will start to see prices come down. that, of course, is what they called a band aid. they admitted themselves it's a temporary fix, and that long term, americans really will need some help here. they said the real way to deal with this is clean energy. that, of course, is a very, very long-term solution. the other thing to note is every president has really dealt with this. whether you look at john f. kennedy or lyndon b. johnson or richard nixon, every president in some ways tried to get their arms around inflation.

the list included trump's former white house press secretary, kaley mcennenny. also his body man, body man is a weird term but literally means a person hired to carry the president's papers and physically move him around to the door and stuff. that body man is johnny mcatee. and ultimately when everybody else started quitting, trump put johnny mcatee in charge of white house personnel. and the new book excerpted in the atlantic magazine, johnny mcentee is playing the role, playing the role essentially being deputy president of the united states. being deputy president to trump, in fact, running the white house in the final weeks of the trump administration. again, he was hired to carry the papers and open the doors. jonathan karl's book also described john mcentee with a direct role, pressuring mike pence that he needs to subvert the count of the electoral votes and there be throw out the election results on january 6th. mr. mcentee reportly participating in that event. it's unknown in jon karl's book about whether the team wants to talk to him specifically but

the white house deputy chief of staff. trump's person a the white house deputy chief of staff. trump's personl assistant. they got subpoenas today. each passing day, of course, is more proverbially pregnant with the question of whether the justice department is actually going to see to it that these subpoenas are enforced. the justice department is still currently mulling whether they're going to bring a prosecution, a contempt prosecution against any trump aides who defy the subpoenas. there was a criminal referral made to the u.s. justice department over steve bannon defying his subpoena from the january 6 investigation. the justice department has received that criminal referral. but they have not acted on it one way or the other. we don't know whether or not this investigation will effectively be allowed to proceed. more trump folks get subpoenas. six yesterday. ten today. they all upon receiving these subpoenas, they all decide whether or not they will comply with them. that justice department decision about whether or not steve bannon will be prosecuted for contempt, for d

pbs "newshour" chief correspondent amna nawaz, white house chief correspondent peter baker, former white house political director for george w. bush sara fagen, and former democratic congresswoman donna edwards. we're going to start a conversation here. rural white voters, last year president trump won virginia's rural voters by six points, 52-46. not a good showing for virginia by a republican. on tuesday, glenn youngkin won rural voters by 27 points. i call that a huge increase. rural voters increased their percentage of the electorate by three percentage points. so from 16% of the electorate in '20 to nearly one in five voters in virginia were from rural virginia. it gave youngkin too big of a lead for mcauliffe to overcome no matter how well he did in suburban and urban areas. donna, i don't know if there's enough votes in rural maryland to overcome this to give democrats a problem, but clearly there was in virginia, and there almost was in new jersey. it's a problem. >> it is. i mean one of the challenges is that we're not going to win rural voters, but you have to contest for them,

chevrolet. >>> white house adviser steve bannon appeared in court. he pled not guilty today, judge accepted his plea. trial date is yet to be set. the january 6th investigation continues to be the focus of so much of what's going on in terms of congress and its oversight responsibilities, but the other big select committee investigating a massive thing in american public policy is the committee that's looking at the trump administration's disastrous response to covid which potentially cost hundreds of thousands of american lives. the committee today subpoenaed top trump white house adviser peter navarro. the subpoena came after the committee had requested documents and information from him in september. they accompanied that request by releasing e-mails showing how integral navarro was in the early trump white house response to the pandemic including taking advice from a fringe outside adviser. they also released emails showing navarro inexplicably pushing the use of hydroxychloroquine. he publicly denounced anthony fauci as evil. he wrote an op-ed i

you obviously covered donald trump and the trump white house, now the biden white house. are these documents, in fact, going to be turned over to the january 6th committee? >> it appears that way. those on the committee are hopeful at the very least. now that trump and his allies have a few legal recourses to go, and there will be appeals, but certainly the sort of -- the firmness of, let's say, the judge's decision last night has given hope to those on the committee that i've been talking to that they will, indeed, see those documents. now, they're expanding the reach with this wave of subpoenas. you read through the names there. it is a who's who of trump world, the second tier. kayleigh mcenany, the press secretary, served in office through january 6th. steven miller, of course, the architect of many of trump's more infamous policy proposals, including the family separation, the children separated from the parents at the border, he remained in the white house late, you know, all the way through inauguration day. johnny mcentee, not a name perhaps many viewers know, but
