[laughter] he is really focused and intentional about his sleeping. he still goes to bed at 9:30 and is up at 5:15 without an alarm clock. so you did not do that lightly, but i did a few times. sometimes involving a disaster or national security situation. more times than any of us would like to admit it would have involved one of his daughters, or at the time, in college -- who were at the time in college. i didn't get grief from the president about that kind of stuff. if a member of the congressional leadership or a cabinet officer said that they wanted to see the president and i didn't think that it was a good idea i would not debate it with the president . i would tell them. i don't think this is worthy of the president's time. i will put the request through if you insist, but i'm telling you now that i will tel

house. >> your grandfather john had a brother who died in the white house. so let's close by telling the story because it was a real tragedy. i believe it was during a reelection campaign that -- >> yes, it was. so it was the boys were playing -- the brothers were 19 years apart, excuse me, 19 months apart and they were playing tennis on the white house grounds. calvin, jr. developed a blister on his foot and that was treated but it became infected and the infection start today spread to his body and they had no antibiotics at the time to treat that and a week after getting the blister he died at walter reed hospital of sepsis. he was 16 year's old. yeah, yeah. i believe that it put a lot of pressure on john. he was seen as only the remaining child and a lot of stress and pressure was put on him to be a model for his son. i do know that it was a real loss for the president and that he blamed himself a lot because if he had not been in that position, maybe his son would be alive. race was a real driving factor in saving the family and helping them to move on.

later, the white house had to walk that back. that's just the president's personal opinion, he wasn't trying to steer doj in any certain direction. but of course they're pleased to see this. there was the fear that congress would lose their place as a coequal part of the government. and now, the charges for bannon, which they believe are good, not just to get to the bottom of what happened on january 6th, but also to send the message that this can't happen again. bannon has embraced this. he seems to be willing to be a maga martyr, and perhaps willing to face prosecution and even prison time. but it's not clear that others in the trump orbit will do the same. now, the sights are on mark meadows who realizes he could face similar charges if he does not cooperate. >> dan, let's talk about mark meadows. what should the legal advice be that a guy like mark madows is receiving right about now? >> the legal advice is, you have to show up. there's no excuse for not showing up. recently, a district court dealt with this in the mcgahn cas

the white house now is backing off. it first said to all government contractors if your workers are not vaccinated no job for them and no testing for them either as a option. white house reportedly saying up to government contractors how you deal with your workers who don't want to get vaccinated. sounds like the white house is afraid of companies dropping their government contracts here, what do you say? >> yeah, i urged the white house and president biden to put a pause on this mandate because they're seeing the effects and we talked about red flags popping up all over and the worst is yet to come. it was interesting, you said the natural immunity might only last 16 months. where did the number come from? this started 16 months ago, we haven't had 30 months, or five years whether the immunity doesn't last. we know the vaccine immunity doesn't last. study out "wall street journal" forbes, picked up, studies say vaccines are better than natural immunity. they used a study of people vaccinated three to six months. it wan

if i read that correctly, is the white house advocating for law breaking? >> reporter: well, they're certainly encouraging it, i think. todd and carley, it's game on after numerous lawsuits that prompted the federal appeals court to issue the stay on the administration's requirement for workers at companies with at least 100 employees to get the shot or face weekly testing. but the doj is fighting back in a filing, saying, quote, the occupational safety and health administration a's detailed analysis of the impact shows that a stay would likely cost dozens or hundreds of lives per day but by contrast it's speculative and remote and don't outweigh the interest of protecting employees from a dangerous virus, this as the white house is encouraging businesses to ignore the stay. >> we think people should not wait. the administration clearly has the authority to protect workers and actions announced by the president are designed to save lives and stop the spread of covid-19. >> reporter: but one restaurant group ceo warns this could put people out of business. >

this is, this is a third rail for the white house. it is what knocked out jimmy carter out of office. inflation is political strychnine. reagan won in a landslide. now claiming that you know, first we went from claiming that spending costs zero, nothing, to saying that spending fixes inflation, to saying inflation is a gadd -- good thing. now pete buttigieg is saying highways, the way they were constructed and design are racist. we have the "washington post," you know, fact checker glen kessler saying that is wrong. historians and academics already debunked that. >> this administration is so out of touch with real -- reality. they care more about definitions of words than problems facing americans. we have an inflation crisis. we saw today, inflation year to year 6.2% increase. since joe biden has become president as of january 20th, inflation has hit 7.4%. that is the highest in 40 years. that means that every american is having to spend more, just to put food on their table. it is unacceptable but they care more about racist bridges
