people like frances haugen are a rare thing in silicon valley. the decision she made to take on facebook wasn't ta ken lightly. the company intentionally hides vital information from the public, from the us government and from governments around the world. silicon valley is a notoriously secretive and notoriously litigious place when it comes to employees who want to put their head above the parapet to raise concerns. how did big tech get so big? and one of the reasons it got so big, to be honest, is by exploiting thousands of people who work there. and the way that they have managed to keep that exploitation going is by silencing people who work there, including through incredibly wide and broad non—disclosure agreements. i've honestly almost never seen anything like it. i'm a kind of human rights lawyer who used to bring cases against the cia, and the culture of secrecy and fear at big tech is basically as bad as i used to see in the cia. it means whistle—blowers who want to come forward, like haugen, need to be extremely brave and have ext

he didn't tweet, he didn't post on facebook in the more that donald trump was banned by silicon valley to shut him up and ostracize him, the more he became everyman. he was everywhere and he was nowhere at the same time. they are obsessed with him but the only thing that is left of donald trump was his wonderful record. so joe biden did exactly the opposite of what trump did and it showed us that trump had done wonderful things. so i guess the message of the election was you've got to have that trump populace message, we've got to be angry and not take things from the left but when they control silicon valley and the corporate media and entertainment and k-12, you've got to be very careful how you target and focus your attacks and the irony was that by trying to destroy trump on social media, the rebirth him. i think it is really important for the republican party whether it is trump or his rivals to keep that message. remember, the republican party, they lost seven out of the last eight popular votes, presidential votes. and they have not won 51%. youngkin almost did. it was 50.9% or

after silicon valley, which is to say, disruptors, what did they do? they identified a large market that was not being fully in property -- and properly served and said i will provide a solution. 95% of our revenue comes from permanent capital vehicles, so we have attired different offering -- entirely different offering. we said there is a chance to be that disruptor, and then we purposely built a business model that looked like a tech company. we did not start and say our base model is a bank, and how do we become a better bank. we started by saying cure is a necessary service that if we can do a great job delivering the product we can earn really attractive risk-adjusted returns , and this is the important point for our shareholders. we look a lot like a sas business and people do not map technology to wall street, but we have done this consciously. >> where businesses are set up to deliver to their end to gives her a certain set of services, but if you held our income statement against any other sas company you would be surprised how similar they a

>> i can say definitively that there have been a handful of startups, one out of silicon valley, who spent an enormous amount of money, very nearly a nine-digit number, trying to automate this system. and i think what we can say fundamentally is we're just not there yet. it's one thing to ask an automation to drive down an interstate without causing an accident in straight line from jacksonville, florida to san diego. it's another thing to ask that automation to exit an interstate and enter into urban and metropolitan traffic, navigate their way through that traffic to a yard where it has to back into a dock. and all along the way you're expecting somehow for that automation to pull off and be recharged or refuelled, certainly fiat had going to make its way across the country without stopping. so, we're just a long, long way away from that happening. >> finally, tra williams, if someone is interested in becoming a truck driver, how much is that going to set me back? >> in florida tuitions range between $6,000 and $8,000 for a 160 program and your cdl class license. they'll go to any

three rounds of silicon valley funding for her idea before she was 24 years old. under friendly questioning from her defense attorney, one of her against attorneys, kevin downey, she talked about the early days of theranos. how she dropped out of stanford at 19 years old after doing some research on microfluidics which became the basis for her invention. initially she thought of a pill people could swallow that would send out data in realtime over how somebody was doing healthwise then it turned into a patch. ultimately after dealing with pharmaceutical companies and talking and doing more research, the idea of this microblood testing device, which ultimately did not work again, by the time she was 24 years old, she had contracts with big pharmaceutical companies. pfizer, glaxosmithkline, bristol-myers squibb all of this now on display for the jury as they get a sense of the elizabeth holmes that dazzled wall street, dazzled investors and dazzled silicon valley a lot more to come next week, including potentially some pretty rough cross examination. >> scott cohn l

valley but here they are and they are businesses. to answer to shareholders, twitter stock is up 57%. facebook stock same time period is up 260%. how does the new ceo turn this around. he has to answer to shareholders who want better performance from twitter, he has to do that too. do the policies have to change? >> the question about twitter's profitability, and the way twitter is run on matters for censorship are two questions. twitter doing what is in its self-interest scathing off regulation and punitive government action by effectively bending need to the party in power. if you are criticizing twitter in fairness we have to apply argument evenhandedly. either we are talking about the company protecting itself and its profitability in which case doing exactly what they do in censoring political content because there's a new party in power that effectively demands they send content that the power it in party doesn't like him. these companies ought to live out american ideals of free-speech and open debate and original vision for t

here is a somewhat sympathetic figure who gave it a shot like so many ceos in silicon valley and came up short. >> her former boyfriend, why was he brought up? he was obviously a big part of this. >> he was the coo, and it came up that he made certain budgetary decisions, and it came up that he came to hire and fire certain employees. she said many times during the trial, hey, the buck stops with me. i was the ceo. but we don't know if she's going to put some blame or whatever on sonny bulwani. his name was invoked by her today. >> so in theory, a decision could be made sometime next week. what's the game plan? where are they going with this, the defense? >> the defense is giving her a chance to say, i screwed up. >> and that's not against the law. >> not at all. i was in charge of the logos that we didn't really have permission to use going on the theranos paper that investors saw, logos for big pharma companies like pfizer. i was in charge of creating an environment that some people thought was overbearing and they quit. both times she said, i wish i could do it over again. look, ra

vta says it will get funding to help build the silicon valley b.a.r.t extension. caltrain will get money to help trekify its system, swapping diesel trains for electric ones. that's right along the peninsula. sam trans and ac transit will get money to invest in zero emissions buses. you see the money there, and it's coming here to those various agencies. these are just some of the agencies. our local cities will also cash in. mayor liccardo, san jose says his city, the most populous will get funds to upgrade the power grid, build more ev charging infrastructure, and buy electric buses for school districts. >>> another story we're watching on this monday night, teachers in oakland raising red flags about crammed cafeterias, rooms with poor ventilation and damaged outdoor canopies. they say their campuses could soon turn into covid hot spots. several local teach verse posted a video to youtube detailing the problems at various campuses within the ousc. teachers say among other issues there is not enough air filtration in crowded classrooms and cafeterias. and after

she comes across as a chief executive, not a flashy silicon valley leader. in this case, almost more lawyerly. very calm. calmly answering questions, leading questions often by her lawyer, presenting herself to the jury and the world as somebody who was in charge, flying high, and not aware of all the details that might have led to the charges that she faces. just not aware of all the details that led to the criminal charges she is fighting now. caroline: ok. sort of claiming i have a deep -- claiming naivety. the devil will be in the detail, the detail that she perhaps didn't grasp. i will be exposed in the cross-examination, i imagine -- that will be exposed in the cross-examination, i imagine. >> she did at one admit to a -- at one point admit to her problem. she can just ignore the charges. she does have to address them. at one point, she did admit she did something wrong. she wishes she had done it differently. which is to lift the logos of pharmaceutical companies onto reports that she used, that she said were endorsements of her technology, in order t

now you have a conflation on the left of sort of corporate culture especially this silicon valley and elsewhere with, you know, sort of semi-religious progressive ideology where, you know, the corporation will stage a land acknowledgment where they talk about how the land is being held on was taken from a native american tribe right before they, you know, get into their third quarter strategic report or something. and it's super weird -- [laughter] it's just very weird to sort of watch, to sort of watch the incorporation of these, this kind of, you know, again, slightly academic progressive rhetoric into corporate hr speak. but what in part it reflects is sort of, you know, the the extent to which this is seen, i think, by people who run big companies in part as a way to sort of give something to progressivism to avoid the kind of bernie sanders version of progressivism. like, americans, american corporations would much rather, you know, construct diversity programs and trainings along the lines that robin deangelo suggests in "white white from if jillty" than they would be to be subj
