let's bring in meteorologist rob. i was driving with the kids today. we saw the south bay. immediately they were like is it fog? smoke? what is that in the air. >> a combination of both. good observation. the weather watchers in the car. high pressure above which tends to act like a lid and it does trap some of the low level smoke around the bay area. driving around the bay you are seeing that. nice sunset to the north. walnut creek some of the haze we're seeing now. and there's enough of it that we have moderate air quality to start off the weekend. once the index gets closer to 100. which it may by monday or tuesday. we may see winter time spare the air alerts. high pressure remains locked in and don't have enough wind to push some of the haze out. another thing we're watching into tomorrow morning. patchy dense fog. nothing too bad. like we see over the last couple days we could see fog in the central valley. spilling back t over night. you are east bay valleys, to concord. or walnut creek. you might see patchy fog for the morning. and then as we wrap up the weekend a fe

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with the when and the where, rob. >> and what will be packing that bigger punch will, once again, be the connection to an atmospheric river that's going to boost the rain rates at this storm and at times lead to some gusty conditions. and we will start things off talking about that wind advisory for the bay area. you can see, most of the bay area will be impacted by this starting at 7:00 tomorrow evening. wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour so you could have some tree damage and local power impacts and if those come down on the roadways, into tuesday morning, you could see an impact there due to those gusty winds. and the other component, obviously, the atmospheric river is the heavy rain potential and we do think it will be the north bay. these areas showing up in red around some of the mountain areas could see 2 to 4 inches of rain and around the rest of the bay area, probably a good half inch of rain falling in a pretty short period of time. so talk more about the heavy rain potential, the timing of the heaveniest rain and the strongest wind i

> a 40-year-old jewelry store in san francisco's chinatown has been cleaning up all day after being robbed again. thieves broke into long boat jewelry and smashed the display case and got away with $250,000 worth of goods. this comes after a window was shattered saturday. investigators are looking at surveillance cameras at the store. >>> the delta variant of the covid virus now makes up 99% of all covid case around the world. world health organization says almost all of the 900,000 cases sequenced worldwide over the last two months originated from the delta strain. that variant was first detected less than a year ago in india. the news comes as covid cases are surging again, most notably in europe. europe accounted for more than 60% of the 3.3 million new cases in the world. dr. anthony fauci says the u.s. has a long, long way to go to gain control over the virus. he says we need to fall as low as 3,000 cases per day. in order to do that, as of yesterday the u.s. averaged nearly 85,000 new cases per day. he wants 33,000. >>> valley water is offering rebates. money is given to turn landsca

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. he is checking out how this thick fog could impact your morning commute. this could be serious, rob. >> same areas affected this morning again, and it's the wind that is part of the story. you are seeing some of that in dublin. a light offshore breeze or wind coming in out of the east and around the tri-valley. and out of the northeast into walnut creek in concord and you can see the fog there. this is he imported fog from the central valley from stockton and tracie drifting west. notice how the visibility starts to drop off here in the last 30 minutes. two and a half miles in concord so the main impacted areas, again, will be solano county, contra costa county, and napa county will continue to see this fog kind of spilling into the west. so that is the way tomorrow morning begins. patchy areas of dense fog. cooling changes during the afternoon. we are going to begin to see more clouds. so, no more of those mid-70s that we saw this weekend. and then, finally, some rain chances coming

sfpd sergeant davin cole was caught moments after he robbed a san mateo pharmacy. he was looking for painkillers, that's a claim his attorney doesn't deny. here's nbc bay area's robert handa. >> the arrest has stunned two communities, one where he works, the other where he lives. they police officer davin cole minutes after he robbed a san mateo rite aid pharmacy of painkillers, a pharmacy that's minutes from his home. the arrest and the fact the 27-year police veteran was after painkillers shocked people. >> okay, you have an addiction, but that doesn't give you the right or to go do something bad. you're an officer of the law. >> reporter: cole's attorney says his client started on painkillers in 2010 after being bitten while training a police dog. he also confirms the sergeant has checked into rehab. >> it's such a sad case to see a person at this stage to have allowed the addiction to get this far, this deep. >> reporter: the district attorney was not so sympathetic. cole will be in court facing charges including possible first degree robbery and resisting arre

as you can see on this map mobs of people robbed stores throughout the bay area over the weekend. walnut creek, nordstrom on saturday and then on sunday there was a location in alameda and the southland mall in hayward and lululemon in san jose. police were out patrolling at many malls in the region yesterday. last night extra guards were on hand to deter any potential crime at santana row and they had a guard and a one man with a gun in his waistband made out with $30,000 in merchandise from that store. at the same time across the street $7,000 worth of sunglasses were stolen. former prosecutor steven clark said the thefts should not be treated like crimes. >> what you're seeing is grand theft because of the amount of goods that are being stolen. but you can also see robbery charges if people who work in the stores are getting this product taken away by fear. >> local district attorneys say they are talking to each other and to police departments about how to put a stop to the surge in retail thefts. governor gavin newsom says he's directing the chp to increase its presence at sh

robert handa joins us from santana row with more on the rob roy there and the security officer who may have prevented another one. robert? >> reporter: well, that's right, santana row is exactly the type of upscale shopping center that has become targets for these types of robberies. and while this shopping center was getting hit, thieves were also gathering to make a run at nearby valley fair mall at nearly the same time. today it's hard to miss the extra security around the popular lululemon store in the santana row shopping center. last night around 6:30, police say a group of adults swarmed the store, including at least one man with a gun in his waist band and made off with $40,000 in merchandise, a routine similar to the organized robberies in san francisco and walnut creek. >> well, as a shopper, it's kind of a shocking thing to hear. >> reporter: jeff grant, a security officer on duty yesterday saw two women rush from a car into lululemon. >> and then immediately, i saw eight people run out to the cars across the street. i tried to stop one of them, but they kind of indicated th

meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the storm for us. when is the first part of this storm to move in? >> we're watching two. technically one tonight that might bring a few showers. as we take a look underneath those clouds from our storm ranger from san bernardino mountains off to the west, a few sprinkles around the north bay, and i think that's probably going to be it with the storm. a lot of clouds. but the better activity with this first storm. interior northern california thunderstorms up there near reading and snow across the sierra and a few showers may come down the coast towards the north bay tonight, but our real attention is on that second storm. it does have an atmospheric river connection going for it. so we'll see at least for a time some pretty heavy rain with that next storm system. as you can see over my shoulder the future cast, there's a lot of red on the map. for the coastal mountains, east bay hills up towards the north bay, that indicates we could see 1 to 2 inches of rain with this storm, and it could come down pr

response to those that would seek to come to oakland and use caravans of vehicles armed suspects to rob businesses. we were prepared, and we will be prepared moving forward. especially trained officers that are trained in de-escalating these highly armed situations. what i was concerned about was the amount of firepower that we continue to address to be confronted with every time these caravans come into oakland and our patrol officers having to drive into those situations and actually putting officers' lives at risk as well. we have two shootings at police officers over that -- over the last weekend. and that has some serious concerns that when officers are responding to these caravans they are being met with gunfire. so in order to safely address this, we have to actually deploy our specially trained officers to be prepared to address these armed caravans. we'll continue to do that. i thank the mayor, mayor shaff, for her proactive approach to assisting the department and helping us identify potential opportunities for resources with additional academies, hopefully unfreezing of posit
