three men approach retired oakland police captain ersie joyner as he pumps gas. they search him for valuables and then check his car. that's when joyner pulled out a gun, shooting and killing one of them. they returned fire, hitting him six times. sources now tell nbc bay area's cheryl hurd that three people have been arrested. u.s. marshals tracked the driver of the getaway car to houston, where they took him into custody. two of others tied to the shootout were arrested in the sacramento area. joyner, meanwhile, spent several weeks in the hospital and is now recovering at home. >>> we have new video this morning showing a swarm of people robbing a nordstrom store in walnut creek yesterday evening. our reporter jody hernandez was there when it happens. she says about 25 cars blocked the street, people jumped out, rushed into nordstrom, racing back out with merchandise before driving away. it's so similar to what we saw in san francisco's union square friday night. one man who works at a nearby restaurant tells us what he saw. >> i probably saw 50 to 80 people in

it began in san lee antro and ended along entire interstate 580 in oakland. sheriff's deputies were out on patrol near 170th avenue and spot add stolen pickup truck. when they tried to pull over the drive whish took off, driving the wrong way on 580. the suspect later abandoned his truck on the side of the freeway. he ran towards foothill boulevard and jumped in a black hatchback. deputies confronted hill, but the suspect drove off, dragging a deputy about 15 yards. the suspect then rammed into a deputy's patrol car and then headed to oakland where he crashed into several other cars. deputies took the injured suspect into custody. >> not exactly sure what was going on with him. is he running from other crimes? is he doing something more serious that he felt the need to go to this level of carnage? so we'll be look into that. >> the deputies injured are expected to be okay. one of them, though, has a broken arm. >> powerful testimony today in the elizabeth holmes trial. a woman testified she received a false positive result for hiv from a theranos blood test.

crime in oakland hitting us at nbc bay area. this is close to home. a private security guard working with another station's news crew was shot during an attempted robbery in oakland. police say that he is in stable condition. there's a $17,000 reward for information about person or persons who shot that guard to be captured. now, the shooting happened at 14th and webster. this is in front of prime 356. a crime reporter and a guard, they were there to interview the store's owners about the smash and grab you see involving some 30 people rushing into the store. it was all caught on surveillance camera. the owners came back to the store for food give away. this is when the thieves started shooting. >> roll up, say get down, he started shooting at everybody. for no reason, the dude didn't take the camera. it was senseless. you know what i'm saying, senseless attempt on multiple people lives. >> the oakland police department, they are asking for the public's help. this isn't the first time a security guard protecting a tv crew has been shot or even shot at
