new york city elected a new mayor tuesday. eric adams says he's a progressive but with a different approach. many see his message as a blueprint for democrats across the country. joining me is new york city mayor-elect eric adams. thank you for joining me this morning. i appreciate it. so you said that national democrats can't be so -- >> thank you. >> -- philosophical and theoretical that you throw out terms instead of looking at the ground and looking at what people need. so what was happening on the ground in this election and how did democrats who are not you miss it? >> well, i believe clearly we should be known for what we did, the infrastructure bill. that is what we must use as a blueprint. i say this over and over again new yorkers and americans we are not complicated. we have a covenant with government. we pay our taxes, and government we are supposed to give goods and services through the agencies and we continue to give a dysfunctional product every year, not educating our children. 65% of black and brown children

it's on the ballot today in minneapolis and in new york city. but this is how we try and arrive at a different understanding of how we use the police. >> in many ways even try to start that conversation in a number of circles, errol. as we look, too, the other thing getting a lot of attention in new york city, vaccine mandates. we know that curtis, the republican, very much against bill de blasio's mandates in the city. adams mostly supports them. that, too, is sort of emblematic of what we're seeing around the country. yes. i would tell you, though, erica, i was a little surprised. i moderated a number of debates for local officers in new york city, and i was surprised at the extent to which whether opposing vaccine mandates became immediately pli ly politicized. mostly republican and conservative party candidates say that vaccine mandates are terrible. they say that they are pro vaccine but they're anti-mandate, in some ways a distinction without a difference. it's very surprising how quickly it became a rallying point for candidates. it seeme

new york city mayor, remember, this was back in julian assange. the progressives lost that primary and then, of course, virginia a projected loss to the democrats. so i think there's going to be a lot of reflecting upon what happened last night, what's happened in the last few months. i think that there are a lot of voters who said, you know what, we want to pump the brakes on the democrats and progressives. let's take another look. we want more people moving towards the center of the aisle. >> harry, you're about to go to sleep. anything else before you go night-night? >> yes, i am about to go night-night. i have been awake 21 hours. look, the fact of the matter is the real only question left is new jersey. we pointed out the beginning of the segment. a far closer call for phil murphy than anyone thought it was going to be. it's pretty clear across the board in these races and something i didn't even mention, on long island, you see a bunch of democrats losing. this is not just one place where democrats are losing. we are seeing it up and down th

at the worst height of the pandemic in the world in new york city, new york city firefighters and fire officers went to the -- >> address what i'm asking you here. >> i'm going to, yeah. >> the problem of being pro-vaccine and anti-mandate. >> well, we have -- again, we've been exposed to the virus very early on. many of our members got sick, and they have a high -- >> it's not the same. just today, the cdc is pointing to research that shows there is more consistent immunity when it comes to the vaccine than infection. that's not something you can hang your hat on. >> well, it's more consistent, but the osha has also come out with a standard that they can use vaccine and testing, which we've had previously to this mandate. our infection rate from that testing, we had over 6,000 tests, less than one-half of 1% of our membership tested positive. that's lower than the public's rate. so the vaccine and testing program we had previously has been working, so there is no reason to impose this mandate, especially when it wasn't negotiated and collectively bar bargained. >> 77% of fdny now vacc

black mayor of new york city. the votes are still coming in. a little over 30% of the vote is in, and there's about a 50-point gap between adams. this is what was expected. new york is of course a very democratic city, but adams put together a very interesting coalition working class voters, union voters, voters of color, voters in the outer boroughs, he also ran not just on public safety. this is something he talked about a lot of his campaign. public safety is a prerequisite to prosperity, talking a lot also about that businesses are able to do businesses more easily cutting through the red tape. it seems like he did coming out on top. as i mentioned early on in the campaign, public safety was the center point of this race. eric adams as a former police captain himself talked often about how he was arrested as a teenager, he was beaten by the nypd, and he later joined the force to try to change it and reform it from within. while he's talked a lot about how policing is a tough job, he's also said we don't want t

so i'm watching and i was like wow, new york city looks like a hell hole there but i live in new york and walk around every day and it does not resemble what is -- you know. >> you know, sometimes political perceptions are little to do with reality. you can't fake shootings and murders and in new york or atlanta, they have been spiking. you may see short term declines but it's an issue back on people's minds and public safety is fundamental to people's quality of life. if you don't have that, everything else falls apart. >> very true. listen, during the pandemic, the crime was terrible. i'll get to atlanta. don't take that down. i'm not done with this part yet. thank you very much. so when -- you know, during covid, during 2020 it was high. as you said, it's going back down and it's still not great and also, i know people who were mugged and hadn't been mugged in -- hadn't been mugged in decades. so it's something very important to the people here in new york but i had been watching something like new york city does not look like the hell hole they're portraying it to be. >> no, we're

this is bergen county, the largest county in new jersey just across the border from new york city. 51%, 52% if you round up right now for 2021. this is phil murphy. four years ago he won this county with 57%. they flatly rejected donald trump. it's more fertile ground now. four years ago, phil murphy gets 60% four years ago, down now to 56%. we'll move to virginia. with donald trump on the sidelines, republicans can make inres inroads in the suburbs. how did glenn youngkin pull this off? after donald trump won by ten points, how did he do it? number one, he managed the trump base. republicans came out in droves. they can recover the republican world dramatically in these small counties. a thousand votes here, a thousand votes there, that adds up. look here in south virginia and the capital in richmond. if you want to turn a dynamic in a state, you have to flip. this is the governors' race. he won everything down here. glenn youngkin was able to turn blue counties red and winning. close races are won in the northern virginia suburbs. glenn youngkin did not win loudoun county. you see it

we know this isn't just impacting cities like new york. other cities like chicago are dealing with this as well and you call mandates like this a reasonable request, so what is your reaction to what you just heard from paolo and his reporting here in new york city? >> well, first of all, i'm very glad that the vast majority of public workers in those cities are being vaccinated, but you're talking to a doctor here in our medical center. everyone from the custodian through the "c" suite has to be vaccinated and we do that because we think it's an ethical and human responsibility. i also firefighters and police to think of this as your responsibility. we're fighting a war against this virus. so far we've asked volunteers to roum their sleeves and fight and then the virus got re-enforced by delta and now our society is asking to draft people in. we're asking people to be obliged to do that. it's a societal contribution. it's ethical. it's professional. we all ought to get vaccinated shepard look, there's a lengthy amount of research at this p

and finally, in the nation's largest city, new york, a retired nypd captain may become the city's second black mayor. cnn's miguel marquez is on the ground. tell us what you're hearing from voters today? >> yeah, look, we're at brooklyn borough hall, which is typically a pretty darn busy voting place, precinct. this is where they sort of check in and fill out their voting cards here, and put them into the machines there, and get them counted. i can tell you that count is pretty slow. we have been at, what, nine hours of voting. they have only clocked about 450 votes total in this location. there are three different election districts in this one room, so typically they would have a lot more. it doesn't mean that the numbers are low everywhere, but it's certainly indicative at least here in brooklyn, people aren't rushing to the polls. there was early voting, absentee voting. that may be a much larger part of the share of the vote this time around as well. the two candidates, the two main candidates, a democrat, eric adams voted today. he carried a picture of his mother. got choked up at
