nbc bay area had the only reporter in court. damian joins us with how he could stoon walk. >> reporter: he is a grown plan now. he was here inside juvenile court today to find out he will soon be set free after the heinous murder 12 years ago. this was jay williams as a 15-year-old. today he's a 27-year-old, a grown man. the d.a. stared him down often as they met in juvenile court today. >> we're in juvenile court. and the person that was sitting 12 feet from me is a man, with a beard and with big muscles. >> reporter: williams heard the judge order him released today. back in 2009, williams and a friend lured a classmate, michael russell, to russell's own home and stabbed him to death. the boys said they wanted to see what it felt like to kill someone. both were tried as adults and convicted. >> this horrific crime that they committed was planned and premeditated. they began by torturing animals, rabbits and cats. >> reporter: but in the years that followed, lawmakers passed a bill prohibiting 14 and 15-year-olds from being tri

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. next week pretty normal. we can all gather, right, and travel. we have some pro tips about taking a flight this holiday season especially because there might be a shortage of tsa workers. that's just ahead. but let's start with earthquake country, right where we are here in the bay area, today not big but certainly notable. a series of small earthquakes around lunchtime and then through the afternoon. good reminder, have that earthquake kit ready. the initial quake struck just before noon and centered around san ramon around 11350 a.m., a 3.9 magnitude earthquake. after shocks followed including a 2.8 at 4:00 p.m. people across the bay area felt that initial jolt. here's nbc's melissa coronado. >> reporter: a swarm of earthquakes rattled starting at 4:33 a.m. >> my dogs were going crazy. they freaked out. they were running for the hills. so that got my attention. usually the little ones i just kind of like shake off. this one got my attention a little bit. >> reporter: the 3.9 magnitude earthquake got lots of

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. we'll get to those stories in a moment but first, breaking news in the east bay. a shooting outside the famous fox theater in oakland. it happened a couple hours ago around 2:30 this afternoon less than an hour after a meet and greet event with the rock band all time low. the band says one of the fans was hit possibly by a stray bullet. the concert tonight is cancelled. all of this of course comes during this heightened concern in oakland after a stray bullet killed that little boy last weekend jasper woo on 880. let's bring in cheryl hurd joining us from the fox theater with the late details. tell us where you are and what you're seeing right now. >> reporter: well, i'm standing in front of the fox theater and as you can see, the gate is locked. fans are very disappointed tonight because the concert set for 7:30 is cancel led because of a shooting you just talked about that happened about 2:30 in front of the fox theater. when police arrived, they found a woman hit by what authoritie

this is nbc bay area news tonight. and i'm jessica aguirre. okay. worries over a winter covid surge growing, not just here but across the globe. right now concern is being fueled by a new variant of covid. it's not just spreading rapidly. it's spreading exponentially. it's known as the omicron variant. it was labeled as a variant of concern. because it seems to spread easily. omicron was detected in south africa. the country went from 200 cases each day a few weeks ago then 2500 cases yevd alone. omicron has been detected in belgium botswana, hong kong, israel but not yet here in the u.s. now the white house says it's not taking chances announcing new travel restrictions for travelers from eight african countries including south africa as well as botswana, zimbabwe and malawi. starting monday travelers from those countries will not be allowed to come to the u.s. unless american citizens or permanent residents. we send nbc's dame yn trujillo to sfo to understand. >> there are no direct flights from sfo to johannesburg but several connecting flights a

in san francisco, nbc bay area news. >>> several of those people accused in connection with the flash mob burglary last weekend in the city were formally charged today. nine people face felony charges, including grand theft and receiving stolen property. prosecutors said one of the defendants was caught with more than $13,000 of stolen merchandise. video of those retail thefts went viral. you've probably seen them by now. dozens of people rushing into that louis vuitton store and other high-end retailers. today we spoke with the mother of one of the people charged. she's concerned with the amount of force police used when they arrested her son. >> i want to see my son. because the last time i seen him, his face and everything was fine. he came over for a minute and didn't, you know what, i don't ask them where they going or nothing. he just came over, seen me for a minute and he left. >> most of the defendants were denied bail. two were granted bail of $5,000 with a series of other conditions. police have said they anticipate many more arrests in this case. >>> a shooting involving a

sources now tell nbc bay area three people have been arrested. u.s. marshals tracked the driver to houston. they took him into custody down there. two others were arrested in the saramento area. joiner is now home and recovering there. >>> we're also following more breaking news out of oakland, where police are investigating a shooting. as you can see from the citizen app video, there's a large police presence in oakland's rock ridge neighborhood. we reached out to oakland police for more details but haven't yet heard back. here's a look at exactly where the shooting happened. people are being asked to avoid that area. >>> and just into our news room. new video shows dozens of people running from a nordstrom store in walnut creek. our reporter was there when all of this happened. she says about 25 cars blocked the street, people hopped out, rushed into the store before running back out with merchandise and driving away. a similar scene to what we saw in san francisco last night. one man who rocks at a nearby restaurant described what he saw. >> i prob

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. back from thanksgiving, all that love with your friends and family, but quickly we're hit by this sobering reality. this omicron variant. might lead to a lot of changes in the bay area in the next several weeks. perhaps more travel bans and a rollback of covid regulations by many of our local counties. here's where we stand now. there is a lot going on here. this variant is not here in the united states as far as we know. but health leaders are already preparing for the arrival. the first confirmed case of this variant was detected by three weeks ago in south africa. as of today, it's been detected in a dozen other countries. canada among them, hong kong and the uk. late today the cdc urging everyone 18 and older to get that booster shot because of the new variant. that bears repeating. if you are 18 and older, you are urged per the cdc to get that booster. it's a message that people in the bay area and health leaders are also echoing. people taking action today. the santa clara fairg
