if that "usa today" reporting is true and nbc news has not independently verified it, but if that is true it is vile, right? wounded soldiers hurt in an enemy attack told that they shouldn't apply for the purple heart as the president at the time gave these repeated weird press conferences denigrating their injuries and playing them down. it's just vile, right? it is just astonishing as a thing that could have happened in our modern history. but now that time in our history is apparently over because the soldiers who were hurt in that big deal missile attack under trump, those soldiers are apparently no longer being told that they shouldn't apply for the purple hearts that they earned. "usa today" is reporting as of today that the army has just received and has now started to process dozens more nominations for purple hearts from the soldiers who were hurt in that attack. once those applications, those nominations are processed, it means the total number of purple hearts awarded to soldiers who survived that attack will likely more than double, and it will happen this time without a

on behalf of all of my colleagues at the networks of nbc news, good night. on washington in the news, sometimes, we like to do a thing where we look at sort of beyond the beltway. look at the front pages of local newspapers around the country to see how the national news is playing around the actual nation. and not just in the capital. that is something that we tried to do frequently on the show. we have it on covid, a number of times. we have it on big political developments. like issues on impeachment, for example. i find it sort of a helpful reset. a slice of the news world that gets you out of the beltway mindset for a day. well, today, house speaker nancy pelosi stuff, they seem to have had a similar kind of idea. pelosi staffers today sent out snapshots of front pages around the country. front pages from local newspapers around the country. in terms of how they're covering the trillion dollar infrastructure bill that passed through congress and that president biden is about to sign. the headlines about that bill are great. particularly about the local

virginia governor's ir race but they won in new jersey, which we found out this time last night, when nbc news made the call. well, that said, tonight within the past hour the republican candidate in new jersey, jack ciattarelli, has just posted a video on twitter saying he is not conceding that race. he does not think this is over. he says he has a team of lawyers and he mentioned that the state's republican party is still manning its election integrity hotline. at the same time, he did tell his supporters tonight, i don't want people falling victim to wild conspiracy theories or online rumors while consideration is paid to any and all credible reports, please don't believe everything you read or see online. he said, quote, i promise you, whatever the outcome, the election result will be legal and fair. seems good, but he's not conceding. he is more than 40,000 votes behind at this point, and most of the votes still to be counted are from new jersey's heavily democratic-leaning counties, so that 40,000-vote margin is likely to get larger, not bigger as the count goes on, but we shall see

on behalf of our colleagues on the networks of nbc news, good night. joining us this hour. it was a sunday, in late february, 1965. the autobahn ballroom at 156 and broadway in harlem, new york city. it's a landmark, big building, beautiful building. had a huge theater that's had thousands of people. and on the second floor there was an actual ballroom, and the capacity of the ballroom was smaller. the capacity of the ballroom for dinners and other seeded events were about 200 people. but that sunday, february 1st 1965, there were double. that number of people crowded into that room. packed audience of 400 people in that room. all there to hear one of the towering and most controversial figures in american civil rights history. malcolm x had been the face and the world famous voice of the nation of islam since long after he joined the nation of islam in the early 1950's. but after more than a decade as a lightning rod in that specific cause, he had make an acrimonious split from the group. he had split from the nation of islam the year before he took the stage in that crowd
