i want to start with you, jeremy. i reached out to you to understand what you were hearing from republicans in the state. you had your eye on the counties that ended up really making a difference for youngkin. talk about what this campaign turned on that maybe was more opaque from the national level. >> yes. well, that's exactly right. a lot of what it did turn on, you couldn't really see from the national level because they were very localized issues dealing with specific schools in fairfax county, for instance, right in so this wasn't all just about critical race theory and the dog whistles to conservatives. that was a huge part of this, but the youngkin campaign capitalized on anger and anxiety and frustrations over parent -- from parents who are still dealing with the traumatic effects of trying to teach their kids at home and hold down their own jobs. and on top of that, you had asian parents in northern virginia who are upset about the way that progressives want to make changes to the admission program in gifted

joining me, white house correspondent jeff mason and "new york times" political reporter jeremy peters. gentlemen, it's always good to see you. the committee, jeff, wants these documents. they want the memos, they want the emails from the trump white house. what do they think might be in them? >> well, that's a good question. i think number one, what they want is to see some actual evidence of what kind of communications there were between the white house and the people who planned the rallies. both on january 5th ahead of the insurrection and on january 6th itself. the president, of course, the former president, i should say, is eager to protect that and has been arguing privilege. but the argument that the previous court tossed out was for reasons that the current president, president biden, and congress want those documents to be made public. so -- but to get back to your question, katy, they clearly are looking for evidence of what sort of communication and what sort of detail was exchanged between the white house and the planners of those events. >> so jeremy, as jeff just said, t

i want to move on to jeremy peters for a moment and talking about donald trump. there has been political news from alaska senator lisa murkowski announcing her reelection bid, teeing up one of the most interesting primaries in 2022. back when she was fighting off the tea party, she lost her primary and won on a write-in vote where every voter had to correctly spell her name, murkowski. not that easy. so she's enormously popular. what's the road ahead for lisa murkowski, who has the whole trump machine if you will against her? >> you're exactly right, andrea. that was no small feat and having to speg murkowski on a write-in ballot. the fact she won shows she's an enduring political brand, her father, the former governor and senator. and i think this is somewhat similar to what you're seeing happen in wyoming. and it's a real test of exactly what the republican party is this these days. with liz cheney, that is a name brand in wyoming. it's likely that if she does survive her primary challenge for voting to impeach president trump, it will be because the cheney nam

i want to bring in jeremy peters. he has been writing about this for "the new york times" and nbc's antonia hilton in colleyville, texas, she's the cohost of the south lake podcast. jeremy, explain to us what is actually being taught no schools and how that compares to what people are upset about and what the media says. >> i think you captured it pretty well, steph. that's the idea that this academic theory that is often taught in law schools and graduate schools isn't actually being injected into the curriculum word for word in schools, k-12, across the country. but its ideas have influenced the way that teachers talk about race in some schools, public and private. and so this concept of critical race theory has become a bogeyman, because it basically, it's a complicated, nuanced subject and it's been reduced to a right-wing bogeyman. and it can mean whatever parents want it to mean. and it can also mean whatever politicians want it to mean. and that's what you've seen in some of these states where republican legisl
